  • How To Tell If A Hermes Constance Bag Is Real

1. History of Hermès Constance bag

Created in 1959 by Hermès' in-house designer Catherine Chaillet, the Hermes Constance was named after her newborn daughter -  it's said that Constance was born the same day the very first bag was completed. Since then, the Constance has become one of Hermes' most loved bags. Although designed more than 50 years ago, the Constance's elegant shape and functional design make it a favourite among girls.

2. The Craftsmanship

The Constance bag is a timeless silhouette and reflective of Hermes' strive for impeccable craftsmanship. Each bag is made by a single Hermès artisan and takes 14 to 18 hours to create, a testament to its quality and longevity.

3. The Construction of Hermès Constance

1) The Constance is constructed with exposed exterior seams, so when inspecting the bag, check that the seams are not splitting at the bottom corners. When every seam is exposed, it typically shows any flaws in the construction. The wax casing should cover the bag's edges but there should be no excess wax visible.

2) The gussets allow for a slim, rigid silhouette, and are expertly crafted in order to ensure durability in the long term. Each of the sizes of Constance, except for the 14cm Micro size,  have the option of a single gusset or a double gusset, meaning the interior includes one single compartment or two separate compartments.

The option allows the client to choose what best suits their individual needs, depending on how much interior space they require.

3) Also note the looped strap, which you should be able to adjust to create a crossbody or double up for a short shoulder strap.

4. The Materials & Leather of Hermès Constance

When it comes to materials, Hermès uses only the finest high-quality skins for its bags. The Constance bag is traditionally crafted in  leather. There's classic Box Calf and Swift (both smooth leathers) or Epsom (grained leather). For those who want something different, there is also canvas and suede which are seasonal. And of course, the Constance does also come in exotic offerings like croc, lizard and ostrich as well. Crocodile and alligator are popular alternatives to the classic leather version.

5. Hermès Serial Number/ Date Code Check

1) Hermes date code stamps can be found in two places: Before 2015, it was on the back of the leather strap, and after that, it was on the inside of right-hand-side wall of the bag. The  date code stamp position of the Constance  bag is on the upper corner of the inner side of the bag, near the stitch. You can see it just by opening the bag.

2) Depending on the year of the bag, each Hermès will have a unique date stamp of of manufacture with a letter accompanied by either a circle, a square, or no shape depending on the year it was made. For your reference, I have included a chart of Hermès date stamps according to year below. The stamp will also feature the artisan's ID and an indicator of exotic skins if applicable.

  • From 1945 to 1970, there is no geometric shape on the outside of the engraving.

  • From 1971 to 1996, it was in a "○".

  • From 1997 to 2014, it was a "□".

  • Until 2015, Hermès used letters in alphabetical order surrounded by a shape to date their items.

6. Hermès Brand Identifiers Stamp

1) Beneath the Constance's front flap lies the bag's only identifiable brand marker that reads  'Hermès Paris / Made In France'  in heat-stamped foil, which should match the same color as hardware of the bag.

2) This logo is featured in a delicate and neat font that is not affected by the texture of the leather. If the text is too big, is not foiled or does not match the hardware, it's a red flag. Counterfeiters often make the stamp very large and obvious to emphasize the brand name, so check that the scale is appropriate.

7. The Hardware of Hermès Constance

1) The  Hermès Constance's H closure, which serves as a brand logo, is both functional and eye-catching.  This metal will feel substantial, and it will not tarnish over time.

2) The  iconic H clasp comes in various options, such as the standard palladium, gold-plated hardware or enamel clasp. Other variations include a leather inlay on the Cartable, as well as exotic skins with croc or lizard embedded within clasp.

3) A genuine Constance should also feature a thin plexi plate on the back of the clasp, affixed with flathead screws. And underneath the clasp, the horizontal bar should have “HERMES” marked on the underside discreetly in the corner.

8. The Stitching

Stitching is a good metric to consider because each Hermès Constance handbag is hand-sewn by Hermès artisans according to Hermès's celebrated saddle-stitching technique. A real Hermes bag is free of any sloppy stitches that is obviously out of place, out of line, crooked seams, or irregular patterns on an Hermes bag.

9. Interior of Hermès Constance

The Constance bags should be lined in lambskin leather for an added touch of luxury, so check to make sure the lining does not have a fabric or faux-leather interior and the stitching is neat and proper without loose threads. Another way to ensure the authenticity of the lining or interior is to verify the color scheme on the Hermes website.

10. The Zipper

1)On the Constance, the interior comes with a compartment that has the iconic diamond-shaped zipper pull. Hermes make their own zippers which feature the Hermes name. On a real Hermès Constance bag, the zipper pull will always lie parallel to the teeth and should not dangle vertically into the pocket.

2) The tab will be a folded piece of leather, cut into a diamond shape in the same material and color as the bag. It should also be marked 'Hermès'. From early 2000s, Hermès began to use H-shaped zipper stop instead of the standard square you might see in basic zippers.

11. The Dust Bag, Authenticity Card & Box

1)The Hermes orange hue is Hermes' signature orange, simply known as Orange, Orange H or Classic Orange. This hue is not to be confused with Potiron, which is darker with brown undertones. In the Pantone matching system, Hermes orange is No.1448.

2)  Hermès doesn't accompany its Constance bags with any such authenticity card.

3) The color of the dust bag will vary depending on the year. For example, vintage dust bags are a tan velour, newer dust bags are orange cotton flannel, and post-2007 dust bags are a beige and light brown Herringbone Toile. Nowadays the color is a light beige with a dark brown Hermes logo on it. Whereas in the fake Hermes, dust bags often come in a grey color and feature a burgundy colored stamp.

4) The dust bag is of a high quality, as the bag itself is, and will feature a high neat stitch count. The authentic dust bag it's heavier and thicker, whereas the fake one is much thinner, smoother and limp.

5) The real logo of the dust bag has a double circle on the outside and if you take a closer look you will notice the difference in the font for the  H, also the circle surrounding the H is different. The line underneath the horse and the carriage, there are two lines under the real one, but in the fake, there is only one single line. There are finer details in the horse as well so you have to pay attention to the logo of the real one.

6) The drawstring on the dust bag is also brown and should be made of 100% cotton. Please be aware that with some used Hermès bags the dust bag may have been misplaced and therefore this this only applies to brand new bags.

12. Hermes Constance Bag sizes

1) The Constance comes in different sizes. Currently it is produced in four sizes, Micro (14 cm), Mini (18 cm), MM (24 cm) and Elan (25 cm). The Elan is slightly longer and narrower, and less square compared to other 3 sizes.

2) Aside from the standard sizes, there's also the Constance Cartable, the biggest of them all at 29 cm that comes with a short leather strap. The Constance 23, 25, and 29 have been discontinued by Hermes. However, you may still find them on the resale market.
