What's the difference between a winter jacket and winter coat?

Winter coats and jackets are garments built to withstand cold, windy, and wet weather. To put it simply, the difference between them is in the length.  At a basic, all-encompassing level, coats are heavy & come down to the hip or longer, while jackets are light & stop at hip length, but there are plenty of variants that ride the line between coat and jacket.

What are the warmest materials for perfect winter coats?

  • Down

Made of goose or duck plumage, down is the warmest, lightest, and most compressible type of insulation. Most of the insulated jackets and parkas are made with down. When considering the warmth-to-weight balance, down continues to be a better insulation than any human-made alternative.

For the most part, only down jackets receive a fill power rating. Most down jackets have a fill power rating somewhere between 400 and 1,000.  Casual wear down jackets generally have a fill power rating between 400 and 700, while high-end performance jackets have a 700-fill rating or higher.

  • Wool

Whenever the subject of winter coats comes up, wool is the first material that will come to mind. Lightweight yet durable, wool also has air pockets throughout which provides natural insulation to coats and jackets. Wool scientifically keeps you warmer than cotton and polyester. Wool is also water-resistant, which makes it an ideal material to keep you warm and dry during the cold, snowy winter months.

  • Cashmere

Long associated with luxury, cashmere is one of the warmest materials perfect for special event coats. It is soft and silky!  It is super warm and breathable. A cashmere coat is definitely worth the price. It will pull together the rest of your winter wardrobe with ease.

  • Flannel

Bundle up in a flannel coat when winter comes. It's a staple fabric for winter wear. It's incredibly comfortable, functional and durable. Flannel is originally made from carded wool or worsted yarn. The air pockets in its fabric help shield you from the cold even on the most frigid weather.

  • Mohair

With its unique frizzy look, mohair is a favorite for jackets and winter coats. Made from the fleece of Angora goats, it is second to none when it comes to natural fiber durability. It is warm and fuzzy, and it suits both men's and women's wardrobes. Both pure mohair and those that are blended with wool can keep you comfortably warm all season long!
