It largely centered around skateboarding culture, particularly in California, and urban environments across the U.S. Streetwear has already made its way into luxury fashion and does not seem to be going away anytime soon. Stussy, Supreme, Essentials and Obey are four popoular streetwear brands. In the streetwear scene, there are not many brands with as much heritage as these four brand. Which brand of them is the best? Is Stüssy a luxury brand? Is Stussy good quality? Is Supreme still popular? Is Essentials worth it? Is Obey a good brand? In this guide, I will explain some similarities and difference between these four brands. Hopefully, this guide will help you understand which brand suites you style better and where to invest your hard money.

Stussy Brand History and Origin

Stüssyis an American streetwear label founded in the early 1980s by Shawn Stussy. It benefited from the surfwear trend originating in Orange County, California, but was later adopted by the skateboard and hip hop scenes.

Shawn Stüssy was a surfer who used to shape his own boards for friends and locals in Laguna Beach, California. Stüssy began screening t-shirts and shorts to sell along with the surfboards as a form of promotion; his surname written in a graffiti-influenced hand style was to become the company logo. Stussy Design & Style

The early success of the brand has been attributed to its popularity in the hip hop and skateboarding/surfer scenes. The brand was also embraced by the punk and other subcultures. In a 1992 interview Stussy said, "Everybody calls it surf wear, or urban streetwear, punk, or surf street... "

Recently, every collection Stüssy release gets better and better. Long gone are the days when they would plaster their logo across the chest of a sweatshirt, or on the back of a hoodie; the Seattle grunge inspired knitted jumpers and authentic casual tracksuits open up new dimensions for the Californian brand. The illuminating colours and vibrant variations in fabrics work surprisingly well together, creating an authentic punk look.

Stüssy's greatest impact on street culture arguably had nothing to do with sales whatsoever, but rather the establishment of a community within the brand. Supreme Brand History and Origin

Supreme is an American clothing and skateboarding lifestyle brand established in New York City in April 1994. The brand is targeted at the skateboarding and hip hop cultures, and youth culture in general.

Supreme was started when a man named James Jebbia opened the company's flagship store in Manhattan, paving the way for the burgeoning skateboard scene in New York City. The store would eventually become somewhat of a counterculture mecca for young artists, skaters, musicians, neighborhood kids, and more. The brand produces clothes and accessories and also manufactures skateboards.

Supreme releases two collections each year. It releases new products through their retail locations around the world as well as their website on Thursday mornings in Europe and America, and on Saturday mornings in Japan.

If you compare Supreme to most other brands of streetwear, you'll find that there is homogeneity to other companies that Supreme doesn't have. Supreme uses different manufacturing and supplier sites. But some of their products are manufactured in Canada and the US while others are made in China.

It can be deduced that some of the brand's clothing is made of good materials while others are made of average quality materials. There are times you buy the clothing, and it feels thin to the extent you can almost see through the material, but there are the thick ones too. For example, the Supreme hoodie is made from a high-quality silk material, which implies that it is long lasting and quite durable. For the Supreme clothing, the stitches are appropriately aligned with no rough edges because they are well stitched by professional tailors. Additionally, the logo of the Supreme has an Eye-catching effect. Though it may have a dull look, the letters are stuck on the material to bring out that fashion sense from the clothing material.

Essentials Brand History and Origin

Essentials is one of Fear of God's newest sub-lines for younger audiences. It launched in 2018 is an associated label of God's Fear that considers the pricing dynamics and competitiveness when setting the prices. According to Fear of God, Jerry has taken modern American culture by storm by dealing with enduring fashion wear that attempts to interpret Americanism.

The idea behind the Essentials was that the founder wanted to capture the women and children's market, which he felt was untapped as they could not access the initial luxury Fear of God products, that were sold at high prizes.

Jerry Lorenzo concentrated on easy, streetwear informed womenswear pieces for the first time, with his own sense of understated cool of course. The simple skirts and easy dresses are made for comfort, but could also be transformed and dressed up with other wardrobe staples.

True to Fear of God form, the color palette is centered on neutral tones of sand, rust, cream, and gray. “In the same way that, I'm scanning and observing how guys dress, I'm looking at women in the same way and saying, hey, maybe the short could be shorter, maybe this skirt could be longer, maybe this cardigan could have a little bit more volume,” says Lorenzo of his design process.

Essentials Quality - Material & Durability

ESSENTIALS shares the pillars of the FOG main label's design vocabulary – think sweats, fleeces and puffas in muted colours and easy-going shapes – just now made accessible to the wider public, at a fifth of the price of FOG.

Jerry wanted to craft products that were accessible and affordable without compromising on quality. At the same time, he espoused transparency by revealing to the clients that it was relatively different from the Fear of God products in terms of quality essentials.

For the price, the quality of Essentials is very good in terms of materials (on par or better than others at the price point. The stitching could definitely be better). There is very little shrinkage that occurs which points toward the material quality.

Obey Brand History and Origin

Created by American street artist Shepard Fairey, OBEY was one of the hottest streetwear brands around. Born in South Carolina, Fairey was a rebellious kid who grew up with great disdain for authority and the establishment, which reflected in his drawings. A skater from a young age, it wasn't long before Fairey began placing his art - heavily inspired by Soviet war images and posters - on skateboards and T-shirts.

His street art bill posters featuring the face of 'Andre the Giant' and the word 'OBEY' began to crop up everywhere in the late 80s, and became a global phenomenon. Looking to incorporate a physical product to accompany his popular OBEY signage, he soon expanded from stickers and posters to apparel such as T-shirts, hoodies, and more. While not nearly as popular as it once was, OBEY continued to keep up with seasonal trends, and its latest collection may be its best attempt to reassert its place in today's streetwear canon.

Obey clothing are at great prices, all of which is made to last from the fine ethically sourced materials. Most recognized for its one-of-a-kind art, Obey is always producing high-quality and unique graphic prints and graffiti stencil designs.
