Jo Malone London Brand History

Jo Malone London is a British perfume and scented candle brand, founded by Jo Malone in 1990. In 1983, the then 21-year-old Malone started up her fragrance and scented candle business Jo Malone London from her kitchen, opened her first store in London in 1994, and five years later, sold the company to Estée Lauder Companies, remaining its Creative Director until leaving the enterprise in 2006. Until 2014 the perfumer Christine Nagel created 47 scents for Jo Malone including Wood Sage & Sea Salt (2014), a skin scent of salt lingering on the body after a day at the beach, that in 2015 the Marie Claire International Fragrance Awards honored as the year's most daring fragrance for women. The brand is now known for its perfumes, candles, bath products, and room scents.

Jo Malone Candle Features

Jo Malone London candles are all handmade in the heart of the English countryside to stay true to the brand's British roots. Using a mix of traditional and innovative technology, every single candle is the combined work of 16 artisans.

Their candles share some distinguishing traits: sleek and simple bottles with unisex appeal; deliberately direct fragrance names and scents that are straightforward but often unexpected, with a quirky combination of notes that might not seem, on first whiff, obviously perfumey.

Jo Malone uses special paraffin wax in their scented candles. However, the exact composition of the wax is slightly altered to suit the fragrance oil used in the candle as well as the wick. The high-quality wax allows it to give a stable burn. During the manufacturing process of the candles, the fragrance oil is first blended slowly with the warmed wax to create an even blend. This gives a consistent scent throughout the candle.

No two Jo Malone London candles burn in the same way and the brand boasts over 400 varieties of wicks. Who would have thought there could be so many options of wicks to choose from? Waxes are custom blended to create a specific scent. They also cut the wick to 6 mm length to standardize the quality of their products and add the company's label, the silver lid, and the black grosgrain bow by hand.

  • Diptyque Candle review

Diptyque Candle Brand History

Diptyque was created by trio of talented individuals: interior designer Christiane Gautrot, painter Desmond Knox-Leet (who'd worked at Bletchley Park during World War II before settling in France), and set designer/theatre administrator Yves Coueslant. They teamed up in 1961, opening their Diptyque store (at the bohemian end of the Boulevard Saint-Germain) to offer the fabrics they'd designed together.

And they began production on their now-iconic candles 2 years later. Over time, Diptyque has worked with some of the most creative 'noses' on the planet, including Olivia Giacobetti, Olivier Péscheux and Fabrice Pellegrin, who've produced exquisite eaux de parfum, roll-ons (so useful for travelling) and an unusual 'vinaigre de toilette'. There are so many ways to enjoy Diptyque on the body, as well as in the home, with the eaux de toilette and eaux de parfum offering something for every scent-lover. Diptyque candles are world-renowned luxury candles that are made in France.

Diptyque Candle Features

Diptyque candles are renowned for their exceptional quality and their beautiful designs. The Diptyque creations were inspired by travels - to the Mediterranean, the near East, and the plants and flowers that flourish there, inviting you on a journey simply by lighting a wick, or spritzing a cooling Cologne. Resins, spices, wood notes, spring flowers - even the whispers from a bonfire - have all been captured by Diptyque, through scent.

Each Diptyque candle is also made from lead-free wicks and pure paraffin wax, offering the finest quality you would expect from a renowned Paris candle maker. The manufacturers of Diptyque candles are famous for never having used synthetic fragrances in their products. Among luxury scented candles, this places Diptyque candles in a unique category. Plus, since each Diptyque candle is made from all-natural fragrances, the wonderful scent of each candle burns absolutely true and pure. Each candle is carefully prepared individually and hand poured to ensure that a qualified person can spot any problems and flaws with a candle and ensure that each Diptyque candle sold is absolutely the best quality.

The manufacturers of Diptyque candles have especially designed their scents to be combined. You can light two or more Diptyque candles from the same scent family (such as floral, for example) at opposite ends of one room and create your own unique signature scent. It's the perfect way to express yourself with scent in your own home.

These candles are also designed to be fashionably stylish. They would look at home in even the most fabulous home, thanks to their classic design, gorgeous black lettering, and bold glass jar. Diptyque candles are truly works of art that work with your decor.

  • Byredo Candle review

Byredo Brand History

Byredo is a European luxury brand founded in Stockholm in 2006 by Ben Gorham, with an ambition to translate memories and emotions into products and experiences.  Byredo is a portmanteau of "By Redolence" which roughly means sweet-smelling and aromatic.

As an outsider in the beauty industry, Ben is somewhat of an anomaly and has been recognized for his personal style and connection to fashion and art in several international magazines such as French Vogue, Vanity Fair, Elle, V Magazine and Fantastic Man to name a few.

Byredo is reinventing the world of luxury through a new approach, where creation is led by emotions, expressing a full and limitless brand universe. Byredo conceives objects using the highest quality materials available, and high-end design details to fuel a renewed approach to modern luxury. Byredo creates and develops a range of products such as fragrance, makeup, home, leather goods and accessories, and is sold in more than 40 countries in a very high-end exclusive network worldwide. Signature scents, including Gypsy Rose and Mojave Ghost, offer a timeless and meaningful sensation applicable to all genders.

Byredo Iconic Products

Byredo Candle Features

Byredo is another splurge-worthy candle brand that will not only look divine on your dresser but follow through with their mission of translating experiences and emotions into products. BYREDO carries clear ethnic influences from Ben's Indian background which has given the brand a unique identity. All products are made in Sweden with a distinct focus on craftsmanship and quality.

Byredo candles come in hand blown, black, glass jars with same minimalist label, and filled with black wax, except for some limited edition versions like Loose Lips Valentines Day candle. These candles burn at least as well as other high end candles and throw exceptionally well.

As with all of Byredo's scents, their candle tells a story. It combines your emotions with the highest quality materials to provide a rendered approach to modern luxury. Through BYREDO I want to communicate my own personal experiences - to contribute to an almost collective memory of time and place. I also believe in a modern approach without loosing olfactory techniques - of simply bringing together the best of old and new." - Ben Gorham

Minimalist in design, they pair perfectly with bubble bath shots, elegantly styled vanity shots, and cozy living room posts. The monochromatic packaging makes a statement and seems to fit in no matter what your decorating aesthetic is.

  • Le Labo Candle review

Brand History

Le Labo was established in 2006 by French co-founders Eddie Roschi and Fabrice Penot in Nolita, New York City. As much as the name suggests, Le Labo, which means "the laboratory" in French, is a cult perfume brand that takes its inspiration from the various goings-on of a perfumer's lab.  The Le Labo "Manifesto" states that "the future of luxury [...] lies in craftsmanship" and includes a line from Hafiz and mentions of Wabi-sabi and Thoreau. Le Labo was purchased by Estée Lauder Companies in 2014. The brand is now overseen by Esteé Lauder's Group President, John Demsey, alongside other fragrance brands including Jo Malone and Tom Ford.

Le Labo's fragrances have staked out a unique presence in the industry, with charmingly distinct scents like Santal 33 and Rose 31 testifying to the brand's deep appreciation of base ingredients.

Le Labo Iconic Products

Le Labo Candle Features

Cult-favorite fragrance house Le Labo gained immediate renown for its subtle, striking scents, apothecary packaging and distinctive naming convention. Each name consists of a word and a number: the most prominent note and the quantity of notes in the composition. Freshly compounded and hand labeled, these handcrafted creations are often unisex and always irresistible.

All of their classic candles come in a thick and heavy glass that has a label with your name or address on it. Their candles are soy wax based and use pure cotton wicks. They are hand-poured in Mississippi, highly concentrated in beautiful oils. The formulations do not include animal products, paraben, preservatives or coloration, and are not tested on animals.

Le Labo's brand vision goes beyond a preference for minimalist design. Le Labo avoids superfluous emotive messaging to ensure that the experience people have of their fragrances is shaped solely by the scents themselves. That is, the brand does not try to lure people in with inviting words.

  • Conclusion

Jo Malone vs. Diptyque vs. Byredo vs. Le Labo: which brand wins the luxury candle showdown? The choice of scents and styles are going to make ALL the difference in the world about how much you like this brand.

Jo Malone

Jo Malone is one of the most luxurious British perfume and scented candles brands. The Jo Malone brand became a huge success in a short period of time due to its amazing scents and luxurious quality. The brand became very popular across the United States and China. All of Jo Malone candles have a handmade approach to ensure that the product is within the company's level. Jo Malone fragrances are almost universally likable and wearable and they often rely on a couple of main simple ingredients that also feature in the name of the candles. If you just want to smell nice, but wouldn't mind knowing what you're smelling: Jo Malone.  But they are a little expensive.

Diptyque

It's no secret: in the world of high-end candles, Diptyque candles are among the best of the best. These Parisian candles are renowned for their exceptional quality and their beautiful designs. Diptyque candles have all-natural scents among luxury scented candles and they never use a synthetic fragrance in their candles, this places Diptyque candles in a unique category. Diptyque candles are unmistakable status symbols adorning the fireplace mantels, bathroom counters, and bedroom vanities of pretty much every influencer and stylish person you follow. Although they have a higher price point than your average wax stick.

Byredo

Byredo is a baby of a brand when compared to Diptyque and Jo Malone and Diptyque. In my opinion, it offers some of the freshest and most interesting scent combinations. I am specifically referring to Byredo's scented candles, but Byredo mainly makes fragrances. Byredo candles really aren't widely promoted, so its not surprising if you have no idea where to find them. My experience with Byredo candles is that they are a viable alternative to Diptyque and Jo Malone in terms of quality of fragrance, burn time, throw, and uniqueness of scent combinations.  They are cheaper, but the scent types of candles are much less than other brands.

Le Labo

Le Labo gained immediate renown for its subtle, striking scents, apothecary packaging and distinctive naming convention. The makers of Le Labo are empiricists in the truest sense. They believe there are things that can only be known through experience, that surpass the expressive capacity of words and images. Unlike reason or logic, experiences are not perfect. They are flawed, at times self-contradicting, and limited.  The founders of Le Labo seem to find pleasure in giving creat ive form to such imperfections, or simply presenting them as is. This is the biggest difference between the fragrances of Le Labo and those of other brands.
