  • Osprey

Osprey Brand History and Origin

Osprey was originally founded in Santa Cruz, California in 1974 by Mike Pfotenhauer, who became known by backpackers and travelers as a young entrepreneur who creates custom-fitted, made-to-order packs

As a young boy growing up in Oregon, Mike found himself unsatisfied with the poor fit of his backpacking equipment. Taking matters into his own hands, he learned to sew from his mother and created his first backpack. They moved their operations to Dolores, Colorado in 1990, the time when the demand for outdoor packs became higher. His reputation would eventually transform the business into the Osprey we are today. Now they specifically design packs for a wide range of activities including travel, hiking, backpacking, climbing, running and biking.

  • Gregory

Gregory Brand History and Origin

Wayne Gregory, the founder of this iconic brand, designed his first backpack at age 14. His passion quickly grew into a proper business. In 1970, Wayne started his own company producing external frame packs, which were the standard at the time. He became increasingly dissatisfied with the technical limitations of external frame pack design, so he dissolved the company in 1973 and began working as a freelance designer for other outdoor brands. As his skills and knowledge grew, the technical standard in pack design advanced. Internal frame packs and soft packs began to appear on the market and Wayne knew that the tech had caught up to his own vision and ambitions for the outdoor pack industry.

In 1977, Wayne Gregory founded Gregory Mountain Products in San Diego. In a span of a few decades, Wayne Gregory’s simple, yet ambitious Boy Scout project had evolved into an elite, high-performance technical outdoor brand that supplied packs to the US military. Gregory's packs are famous for their ergonomic and comfortable fit. Gregory was the first company to build packs in different harness, frame, and waist belt sizes.

Gregory Backpack Quality

From a proud, homegrown pack making heritage into a bright, lasting future as an industry leader, Gregory has established a path of innovation and practical design that has driven and advanced outdoor packs for years.

Gregory Mountain Products took an approach to materials and design that was unique within the industry. They were the first pack maker to produce packs in multiple frame, harness and waist belt sizes to accommodate a variety of torso lengths, body shapes and heights. Gregory was also the first to design a waist belt system that can adjust to different hip angles - a feature especially important to fitting women properly for packs. Gregory has also consistently been at the forefront of pack material innovation, from creating a new bar-tack stitch for stronger bonded webbing to lightweight ergonomic foam back panels and padding.

Gregory packs are covered by a limited lifetime warranty. The warranty doesn't cover normal wear and tear, but Gregory will quickly repair any damaged pack for a reasonable fee.

  • Deuter

Deuter Brand History and Origin

Deuter is a German-founded company that started in 1898. While the company specializes mainly in backpacks today, in the past, Deuter also offered mail bags, sacks, and smaller carry packs. The designs offered by this brand were so popular in the early part of the 1900s the company was contracted to create sacks for the Bavarian Royal Mail. Shortly after that, the military requested products, including backpacks, belts, knapsacks, and mess tents.

Deuter has been making packs for explorers and expeditions for over one hundred years. They also outfit athletes and cyclists with bags and packs suited to their active lifestyles. Although Deuter has been popular in Europe for many years, they came to the USA market in 2001 and have been growing in popularity here ever since.

Deuter Backpack Quality

Deuter is passionate about combining the best in technical design and sustainability. As faithful companions uphill and downhill, on the bike or on the climbing rope, they have developed different back systems. Each is tailored to specific requirements.

On small to medium backpacks that are at home in easier terrain they go for maximum ventilation. The heart of the Aircomfort systems - It is extremely durable, provides stable tension for the airy back mesh and creates the ventilation space between pack and wearer's back for the moist, warm air to dissipate. The easiest way to carry heavy loads is when backpack and wearer become one. This is what their Aircontact principle is all about: the body contact system brings the weight close to the body and therefore close to the center of gravity. A bike pack always has to sit secure and snug on your back – even on the roughest rides. The unique Airstripes System takes care of that and offers effective ventilation. The Alpine back combines a secure, compact fit for full pack control and full focus on the terrain with a top carrying performance and a comfortable ventilation between the two softstripe back pads. Their lightweight backpacks come into their own during endurance sports and Alpine day treks.

  • Conclusion

Osprey vs. Gregory vs. Deuter vs. The North Face: which brand wins the Backpack showdown?

Osprey

Osprey lives to build high-performance products that last a long time and are always looking at cutting-edge technology and materials when designing  packs. Since their inception, Osprey has been creating innovative products with really amazing and intuitive features, such as foam pads, zippered panels and compartments, and adjustable harnesses. Osprey has a huge line of packs for hiking, biking, snow play and even travel in the form of wheeled bags.

Gregory

With an uncompromising commitment to quality construction, personalized fit, cutting-edge innovation, as well as efficient, sport specific features, Gregory packs are and will continue to be a favorite choice of mountaineers, trail runners, hikers, skiers and other outdoor enthusiasts around the world for years to come. For backpacking, the Gregory Baltoro for men and Deva for women have a reputation as some of the best large capacity backpacking packs on the market.

On average, Gregory's backpacks are pricier than Osprey's products. While they may be too expensive for budget-conscious adventurers, I think that most Gregory backpacks are still worth their price

Deuter

Deuter is the brand with a much longer history - it's easy to see why the company has such a high reputation as well as the cult-like following among the trekkers everywhere around the world. Not many companies have perfected their craft as well as Deuter did.

Duter packs are said to be comfortable and fit well, some say they fit better than Ospreys, but each person is different. The Deuter backpacks do have a narrower gap between shoulder straps, especially women's models. That said, Deuter packs are very adjustable making them a pack a teenager could grow into, and fitting many torso lengths. When it comes to prices, Deuter, Gregory and Osprey are the one that makes more expensive backpacks

The North Face

The North Face products are good quality and hold up well. But of course they aren't all the same quality. You can get a new The North Face backpack for less than $40. It will suit you well if all you need is just a regular backpack. But if you need something more than just a bag for daily commute, it will cost you more. Large travel bags and backpacking packs cost around $150. And that is a really good price for such a quality product.
