Shin Ramyun Red vs. Black vs. Gold vs. Neoguri: Differences and Reviews 2024

Shin Ramyun Red vs. Black vs. Gold vs. Neoguri: Differences and Reviews 2024

As global interest in Hallyu and Korean food increases, instant noodles have become a top-selling product, and among them, Nongshim's flagship Shin Ramyun has been a favorite among noodle lovers in the United States and around the world. In 1986 Shin Ramyun first made its debut, and quickly rose to become the most popular ramyun in Korea. Year after year and decade after decade, Shin Ramyun’s unique spicy flavor ensured its place on top in the hearts of Korea’s ramyun lovers.

What is the most famous spicy ramen brand in Korea?

Nongshim is definitely one of the most famous ramen brands in Korea!

Nongshim, one of the largest food and beverage companies in South Korea has become especially known for its Shin Ramyun line, which is the best-selling ramyun product in its country and a leader globally.

Putting this into perspective, Nongshim said that “since its creation in 1986, more than 22 billion bags have been sold. If every bag of Shin Ramyun ever sold is placed end to end, it would be more than 100 times the distance from Earth to the moon.”

Combining classics and latest hits, we’ve listed five Nongshim ramen:

  • Shin Ramyun ORIGINAL

  • Shin Black

  • Shin Red

  • Neoguri

Taste

Soft and chewy noodles paired with spicy and flavorful broth. Enjoy delicious beef ramen at an affordable price. The upgraded version of Shin Ramyun has an extra pack of beef bone soup seasoning. The thick broth, with chunks of beef, red peppers and onions, makes it more of a hearty meal. This is the spiciest Shin Ramen series and I really like it and I can eat it every day and not just as a spicy noodle challenge.

The seafood-flavored ramen contains dried seaweed, fish, gluten, and dried carrots, and tastes more like Japanese ramen than Korean ramen.

An upgraded version of Shin Ramen, but the beef soup base is replaced by chicken soup base. Not as delicious as expected. Maybe it’s because I think Samyang’s chicken flavored ramen is the best.

Flavor

It tastes great and has a full aroma.Luxurious beef flavor ramen. Less spicy. The chilies, black pepper, garlic, onions, beef, shiitake mushrooms and bok choy inside are an added bonus and add depth to the flavour.Koreans and Japanese like the taste of seafood, which they think is umami, but most Chinese think it is fishy. Not my favorite. It has a very bland taste. I didn’t feel that satisfying feeling of a delicious meal after eating it.

Shin Original vs. Black vs. Red vs. Gold vs. Nongshim Neoguri: Reviews

#1. Shin Ramyun Original

1709885720712628.png

  • Spice level:3,400 SHU

  • Spicy Experience: 3

The spiciness level of the original shin ramen is 3,400 SHU, so if you like spicy flavors, you will definitely eat a bowl quickly.

Although our favorite Korean famous spicy ramen - Samyang Buldak 3x is the spiciest, so much so that it has caused challenges from countless hot and spicy lovers, its spiciness level is 13,200 SHU, which is too spicy for daily meals.

And Shin Ramyun, also from South Korea, I bet is the spicy ramen most commonly enjoyed by my friends around me!

Although the numbers vary greatly, Shin Ramyun still tastes quite spicy to most people in the world, except Koreans and Chinese, so we rate it a 3 on the spiciness scale.

  • Flavor and Taste: 5

If you like bold and spicy flavors, try the signature beef flavor, which is not commonly found in ramen.

Shin ramyun has a bit of spice, but it is far from one of the spiciest ramyuns on this list. However, if you are very sensitive to spice or are not used to Korean ramyun, this can feel quite spicy.

It comes in instantly recognizable red shiny packaging and claims it "can make a grown man cry".

Interestingly, the spiciness will clear your sinuses and any bad mood from a hard day at work, while the chewy noodles will perk you up.

The chewiness of the noodles and the richness of the spicy broth – packed with beef, mushrooms, carrots, and peppers – will make you crave another bowl instantly.

We believe you will not be disappointed, after all, this is the spicy flavor that Koreans love, the representative ramen of Korea! Since its development in October 1986, Shin Ramen has been loved by people.

Currently, Shin Ramyun sells an average of 3 million copies per day, accounting for approximately 25% of the total Korean ramen market.

The unique spiciness of Shin Ramyun is loved not only in Korea but also in 80 overseas countries including Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China.

#2. Nongshim Shin Ramyun Black

1709885759568622.png

  • Spice level:2,300 SHU

  • Spicy Experience: 2

Want a milder spiciness? I think Nongshim knows what foodies mean, so they have long launched a less spicy version of Shin Ramyun, which is Shin Black which is highly recommended by major media bloggers and netizens, especially in North America.

Shin Black Ramyun's heat level is rated 2 on a scale of 1-5, making it perfect for those who need just the right amount of spice to liven up their meal.

What's the secret to mild spices?

I can tell you right away after I tried my first bite of ramen - the secret is its thicker soup base.

True to form, the Shin Black noodles are a premium version of NongShim's popular Shin Ramyun noodles, and also include an extra "sul-long-tang" (beef bone stock) seasoning packet.

The milky bone broth packet makes Shin Black's soup creamier and less spicy than the original Shin Ramen.

You can see the chili pepper chunks in the soup base, which gives the noodles a bright red color, but the spiciness is neutralized and not that spicy.

  • Flavor and Taste: 5

If you're trying it for the first time, go for the Red Classic, but there's no doubt that the best Korean ramen is the Shin Black Premium, as they're more satisfying, tastier, and more fun than regular ramen.

It’s also significantly more expensive, costing 50% more in Korea.

It has a winning combination of a complex, spicy broth, substantial dehydrated vegetables, and toothsome noodles.

The most striking thing about Black Shin Ramen is the broth—thick and rich with garlic and onion, giving it the depth of flavor you crave. Plus the famous Shin Ramyun ‘kick’, with red pepper and green onion to add a powerful punch.

Nongshim Shin Ramen Black is the highest quality noodles, unparalleled. I think Black Ramen can be called the best instant noodles in the world! But since it's a bit pricey and not spicy enough for me (so I'm really a spicy lover), it wouldn't be my first choice. But my American friends all thought it was worth a try and they are repeat customers of this ramen!

#3. Shin Red

image.png

  • Spice level:7,500 SHU

  • Spicy Experience: 4

Could it be that Nongshim has also read my mind?

Nongshim has launched a new flavor “Shin Ramyun The Red” — which is said to be twice as spicy as its existing Shin Ramyun, which for some means twice as delicious.

Shin Ramyun The Red measures around 7,500 Scoville heat units (SHU), which is twice as spicy as the original Shin Ramyun (3,400 SHU).

This new edition surpasses Angry Neoguri (6,080 SHU), which is currently Nongshim’s spiciest instant noodles.

With a spiciness level of 4 and one serving containing all the goodness you can think of, this Shin Ramyun Red is sure to bring an explosion of flavor to your kitchen.

  • Flavor and Taste: 5

When I heard this exciting news, I immediately searched online and purchased a few packs of Shin Red Ramen to try.

First of all, the taste is very good. It only took me less than 10 minutes to finish the whole bowl, because the spicy feeling made me unable to stop at all!

I can attest that Shin Red is spicier than the original Shin Ramen, I can't tell if it's twice as spicier, but it's the spiciest Shin Ramen series. It's just a little milder than Samyang's chicken noodles and a little easier to swallow.

Nongshim has enhanced the seasoning by adding more Cheongyang chili pepper, as well as spices like black pepper, garlic and onion.

In addition to spices, this ramen also includes reinforced beef, shiitake mushrooms, bok choy and a thicker broth.

Smooth, firm, chewy noodles that everyone loves and a soup with an intense, richer flavour that packs a punch!

Shin Red has an addictive, spicy taste that will keep you coming back for more.

#4. Nongshim Neoguri

1709885803102359.jpg

  • Spice level:3,200 SHU

  • Spicy Experience: 3

Experience the tantalizing taste of perfectly seasoned noodles at a spiciness level 3, it'll have your mouth tingling with delight before you know it! And with a flavor combination of seafood and spice, each spoonful will be like taking a trip around the world without ever leaving your home.
So what are you waiting for? Get ready to experience some truly unforgettable flavors with Neoguri Seafood & Spicy from Nongshim today! Your tastebuds won't regret it!

  • Flavor and Taste: 5

Popular for its thick, Udon-style noodles and spicy seafood flavour, Neoguri remains a fan favourite in Korea and around the world. The distinct, chewy and thick noodles with the spicy and rich seafood soup will have you craving more! The noodles absorb all the wonderful flavours in the soup and the dried kelp adds texture, taste and is also an amazing source of vitamins and minerals such as magnesium.

Shin Original vs. Black vs. Red vs. Gold vs. Nongshim Neoguri: Which spicy cheese ramen is the best?

Shin Ramyun The Red Ramen is my first choice!

It is quite spicy, creamy and tasty.

The harmony of the spiciness of the Buldak sauce and the thick, creamy white sauce is the essence of spicy creamy pasta!

The creamy carbonara sauce is made with real cheese, butter, and cream, giving the noodles a rich and indulgent flavor.
