Why is mint toothpaste so popular?

For centuries, people have used various methods to freshen breath and clean teeth. In China, ginseng, herb mint and salt were once added to improve the taste of toothpaste.

However, it was in the 1900s that mint-flavored toothpastes really caught on, and Pepsodent really changed the game.

Pepsodent toothpaste contained citric acid, mint oil, and other chemicals to help keep the paste from clumping. It was not long before the inventors realized people liked the tingling sensation from the mint oil. People equated this with a “clean” feeling.

However, using a toothbrush daily was just beginning to gain popularity. So Pepsodent launched a very successful advertisement. 

People were told that their teeth were “dingy” by the Hopkins ad if they didn’t use the Pepsodent mint toothpaste. His ad promised to make the customers’ smiles more beautiful if they used mint toothpaste. 

Hopkin’s ad campaign not only made mint-flavored toothpaste a worldwide hit—but it also created the daily brushing habit. 

Finally, after a decade’s worth of research, competing toothpaste companies discovered what made Pepsodent so famous—mint. This is why it’s near impossible to find toothpaste without some kind of ‘minty’ additive that makes our mouth feel cool and clean.

How does mint affect your mouth?

People prefer mint to other ingredients because it has a high content of a key active ingredient: Menthol.

Menthol triggers sensory receptors located in the mouth and on the skin. These receptors usually respond to temperature changes. Menthol tricks these receptors into a false cool sensation without actually changing the temperature. This results in that cold fresh feeling, as well as a slight numbing effect. 

Mint has probably the most refreshing clean scent of all flavors. Given that fresh breath is a key concern for many when it comes to oral care products, it is not surprising that it is still the most popular choice globally. With that in mind, as far as flavors go (agents added to create the flavor), the most common ones used are spearmint and wintergreen.

Making a toothpaste pleasantly minty, then, requires more than simply adding mint to the mix. It requires the specialized skills of a flavorist, an expert trained in the design and development of flavors.
