13 Mintiest Toothpastes in the World, Ranked 2024

13 Mintiest Toothpastes in the World, Ranked 2024

We'll surely find cool mint, fresh cool mint, icy cool mint, fresh mint, clean mint, menthol chill and many other variations that offer up the lure of 'mint'. Why is mint so popular as a toothpaste flavour? People prefer mint to other ingredients because it has a high content of a key active ingredient: Menthol. Menthol tricks the brain, sending a signal that creates a sensation that you have ice in your mouth. It's a refreshing and clean taste. That's why we prefer mint. It also features a cool, revitalizing minty flavor that leaves the mouth feeling fresh and clean, so people can instantly feel the toothpaste working.

The mintiest toothpaste? Why are most toothpastes flavored with mint?

Mint toothpaste remains the most common flavor in the world.

Why is mint toothpaste so popular?

For centuries, people have used various methods to freshen breath and clean teeth. In China, ginseng, herb mint and salt were once added to improve the taste of toothpaste.

However, it was in the 1900s that mint-flavored toothpastes really caught on, and Pepsodent really changed the game.

Pepsodent toothpaste contained citric acid, mint oil, and other chemicals to help keep the paste from clumping. It was not long before the inventors realized people liked the tingling sensation from the mint oil. People equated this with a “clean” feeling.

However, using a toothbrush daily was just beginning to gain popularity. So Pepsodent launched a very successful advertisement.

People were told that their teeth were “dingy” by the Hopkins ad if they didn’t use the Pepsodent mint toothpaste. His ad promised to make the customers’ smiles more beautiful if they used mint toothpaste.

Hopkin’s ad campaign not only made mint-flavored toothpaste a worldwide hit—but it also created the daily brushing habit.

Finally, after a decade’s worth of research, competing toothpaste companies discovered what made Pepsodent so famous—mint. This is why it’s near impossible to find toothpaste without some kind of ‘minty’ additive that makes our mouth feel cool and clean.

How does mint affect your mouth?

People prefer mint to other ingredients because it has a high content of a key active ingredient: Menthol.

Menthol triggers sensory receptors located in the mouth and on the skin. These receptors usually respond to temperature changes. Menthol tricks these receptors into a false cool sensation without actually changing the temperature. This results in that cold fresh feeling, as well as a slight numbing effect.

Mint has probably the most refreshing clean scent of all flavors. Given that fresh breath is a key concern for many when it comes to oral care products, it is not surprising that it is still the most popular choice globally. With that in mind, as far as flavors go (agents added to create the flavor), the most common ones used are spearmint and wintergreen.

Why You Should Look For The Best Mint Toothpaste?

In the first half of the twentieth century, advertising turned toothbrushing into a social necessity. Menthol’s sensory cue, that burst of minty coolness, was how you knew it was working — a sign of effectiveness that was also a badge of social acceptability.

But until the 1950s, that minty clean feeling was mostly just a feeling. There was little evidence that toothpaste actually did what it promised: prevent cavities and improve oral health.

It was not until 1955, when Proctor & Gamble added stannous fluoride to its Crest-brand toothpaste – after a decade of dental research at the University of Indiana – that toothpaste could claim to be clinically proven to combat decay.

Other manufacturers soon followed suit, adding fluoride and other scientifically proven ingredients to fight against cavities, gum disease, and tartar.

The ADA-endorsed compounds that makes today’s toothpaste and mouthwash effective also add sensations — usually not very pleasant ones. Fluoride imparts a sharp, metallic tang.  Tetra-sodium pyrophosphate, a tartar-control agent, has a bitter, burning taste. Other key ingredients can taste astringent, chalky, and generally icky.

Making a toothpaste pleasantly minty, then, requires more than simply adding mint to the mix. It requires the specialized skills of a flavorist, an expert trained in the design and development of flavors.

Bob Vogt is a senior flavorist at Colgate, where he has spent nearly two decades developing flavors for products such as Colgate Total (“a peppermint-dominant flavor with some sweet characteristics and a lingering coolness,” as he describes it) and Tom’s of Maine (Colgate’s all-natural brand).

The 13 Best Toothpastes - Pleasant Mint Flavors, Breath Freshening Effects and More

Fresh, bright and clean. Around the globe, that’s what people want from oral care products—a fresh-feeling mouth, clean teeth and pleasant breath.

#1. Colgate® Max Fresh® Toothpaste, Cool Mint

($5.49 FROM Colgate - Get Up To 5% Cash Back & Save 15% On 1st Order)

Many of today's consumers associate breath strips with instant fresh breath.

Colgate-Palmolive, the world's oral care leader, has a new dimension of freshness with a new Colgate® Max Fresh Toothpaste with mini Breath Strips - the first and only whitening toothpaste infused with mini breath strips.

The breath strips dissolve in your mouth instantly upon brushing, releasing an extra rush of breath freshening power.

This new addition to Colgate's lineup comes out of the flip-top lid tube as a warming, fragrant foam that tastes a little sharp to begin with, but it's easy to get used to.

To appeal to a range of consumers, Colgate offers Max Fresh in a 6.0 oz. laydown tube and in a 4.6 oz liquid gel. Both forms are available in two refreshing flavors: Cool Mint (peppermint) and Clean Mint (spearmint).

Looking for the most mint-flavored toothpaste? We recommend Cool Mint first.

Numbers don’t lie: This toothpaste offers a 10x longer-lasting cool than the next leading fluoride toothpaste.

Plus, it fights cavities and whitens teeth leaving you with a healthy smile. This whitening toothpaste from Colgate contains millions of active oxygen molecules, which are the ones that oxidize stains on your teeth. As promised by the brand, it worked in just three days and some minor stains were removed. After more than two weeks, netizens found that the overall teeth became whiter.

#2. Colgate Total Whitening Toothpaste, Mint

($3.99 FROM Colgate - Get Up To 5% Cash Back & Save 15% On 1st Order)

Unlike ordinary toothpaste, Colgate Total adheres to hard and soft tissue for whole mouth protection.

Colgate Total helps fight germs not just on teeth, but also on tongue, cheeks and gums for 12 hours, for whole mouth health.

If you're looking for the best whitening toothpaste, this Colgate Total comes out on top in many tests. And it is highly recommended by dental professionals too.

Because not only is it effective and safe, but it also has the ADA stamp of approval, which not all whitening toothpastes can do.

Colgate Total® delivers on the brand’s promise that everyone deserves a future they can smile about.

It provides all the benefits of the original formula – excellent protection against plaque, stains, tartar and cavities, helping promote gum health and relieve sensitivity, plus the additional new benefit of instant neutralization of odours associated with bad breath.

The toothpaste itself isn’t overpowering or spicy, but pleasantly minty.

While the mint flavor isn't overpowering initially after brushing, you'll notice your breath stays minty fresh for a few hours.

Plus, it's incredibly affordable, especially compared to other at-home and professional whitening products.

#3. Colgate Optic White Renewal Teeth Whitening Toothpaste

($6.99 FROM Colgate - Get Up To 5% Cash Back & Save 15% On 1st Order)

This is the go-to for anyone seeking a brighter, whiter smile.

Colgate® Optic White® Renewal toothpaste contains 3% hydrogen peroxide, which is very high amount of the professionally-recommended whitening ingredient available in a toothpaste.

The product looks to aid in the removal of 10 years of yellow stains when brushing twice a day for four weeks, the company said.

Colgate® Optic White® Renewal toothpaste is available in three variants – High Impact White®, Enamel Strength and Lasting Fresh® – all of which contain a powerful formula that deeply whitens beyond surface stains while being safe for enamel.

Colgate® Optic White® Renewal toothpaste is also sugar-free, gluten-free and vegan.

Colgate Renewal is also my favorite because it has a fresh, clean feel and a minty aftertaste that leaves my mouth feeling cleaner than other products I've tried.

But be prepared: the flavor of this toothpaste is bursting with fresh punch, as it's the strongest mint flavor I've ever used. If you don't like extreme refreshing power, then this isn't for you.

Now, they're also introducing the Optic White® Pro line, a toothpaste for all coffee drinkers and anyone looking for a whiter, brighter smile.

Colgate Optic White Pro is a teeth whitening toothpaste made by the whitening professionals at Colgate, Colgate Optic White Pro Series' formula contains 5% hydrogen peroxide, the highest level of hydrogen peroxide in an over-the-counter whitening toothpaste. It can remove 15 years of stains for a smile that will dazzle.

#4. Sensodyne® Rapid Relief

($6.98 FROM Walmart - Get Up To 4% Cash Back)

For people with sensitive teeth, cold foods can unexpectedly trigger a jolt of nerve pain, fast, turning enjoying something like ice cream into a painful and unpleasant experience.

Sensodyne® Rapid Relief provides an easy way to enjoy the foods and drinks you love without experiencing pain, by providing clinically significant sensitivity relief in as little as three days with twice daily brushing.

Sensodyne Rapid Relief is engineered to beat sensitivity pain fast by quickly creating a protective barrier over the sensitive areas of teeth to keep outside triggers from reaching the nerves.

When tooth enamel wears away, it exposes the soft, inner layer of your tooth called dentin. Consuming hot or cold foods and drinks can trigger the nerves inside your teeth when they reach the exposed dentin tubules, resulting in a short, sharp pain.

Sensodyne Rapid Relief has a unique formulation with stannous fluoride that starts to form a gel-like scaffold over exposed dental tubules from the first brush to provide fast relief from pain in three days.

Is the actual effect good? One netizen said, "As a self-proclaimed foodie, I can't let anything get in the way of enjoying my favorite foods, such as ice cream. Sensodyne has given me the protection I need from tooth sensitivity for years. It also contains the benefits of fluoride, protects against cavities, freshens breath and whitens for an all-around healthy – and camera-ready – smile!"

SensodyneRapid Relief is available online and at major retail stores nationwide in two flavors: Mint and Extra Fresh.

The best toothpastes for sensitive teeth often taste slightly different because they tend to be thicker, but with Sensodyne toothpaste, this is rarely the case. I find it still leaves my mouth feeling completely clean, especially with a refreshing mint flavor.

#5. Sensodyne Pronamel Gentle Whitening Sensitive Toothpaste, Alpine Breeze

($12.48 FROM Walmart - Get Up To 4% Cash Back)

Sensodyne Pronamel Gentle Whitening Sensitive Toothpaste, Alpine Breeze 4 Oz, 2 Pack

Sensodyne toothpaste is the #1 dentist-recommended toothpaste brand for sensitive teeth.

Regular use of this toothpaste relieves one from sensitivity and helps restore the natural whiteness by removing the surface stains on the teeth.

Pronamel has built equity as the specialty brand that protects tooth enamel from acid erosion.

Everyday acids in your diet, like green juice, wine and salad dressing, can weaken tooth enamel over time making it susceptible to further damage. As enamel wears away, it exposes the dentin underneath, discoloring and dulling a healthy smile and leaving teeth susceptible to cavities and expensive dental treatments.

Pronamel Toothpaste is specially designed for people who are at risk of acid erosion and is clinically proven to help rebuild enamel strength and protect from acids. Using its unique optimised-fluoride formulation, it strengthens teeth by helping remineralize weakened enamel.

The Alpine Breeze flavor is just the icing on the cake. It's a refreshing mint that doesn’t overpower but leaves your mouth feeling clean and fresh.

#6. Sensodyne Sensitivity & Gum Sensitive Toothpaste

($6.98 FROM Walmart - Get Up To 4% Cash Back)

Sensodyne Sensitivity & Gum Sensitive Toothpaste, 3.4 Oz

One of the leading causes of tooth sensitivity is poor gum health.

As gums recede, the underlying dentine gets exposed over time, and external triggers (like cold water, tea etc.) can stimulate nerves inside the tooth to cause a short, sharp sensation of tooth sensitivity.

One in every two people with sensitive teeth also have gum problem that they may be unaware of.

The new Micro Foam formula targets and removes plaque bacteria in hard-to-reach places between the teeth and along the gumline, helping to restore gum health.

The 75ml product, which has an “extra fresh” mint flavour, is formulated to provide “daily triple action”, helping to protect sensitive teeth, neutralize plaque bacteria for healthier gums and strengthen enamel.

The Sensodyne toothpaste helps to maintain strong, healthy teeth and gums, while the mint flavour leaves an extra fresh feeling in the mouth, providing a soothing and cooling sensation on the gums.

#7. Hello Activated Charcoal Epic Whitening Fluoride Free Toothpaste, Fresh Mint + Coconut Oil

($5.97 FROM Walmart - Get Up To 4% Cash Back)

Hello Activated Charcoal Epic Whitening Fluoride Free Toothpaste, Fresh Mint + Coconut Oil, 4.0oz

Say goodbye to harsh chemicals and hello to naturally friendly activated charcoal fluoride free whitening toothpaste!

The black paste is thoughtfully formulated with activated charcoal made from sustainable bamboo, which has incredible whitening properties to remove surface stains.

If that weren't enough, it also soothes with coconut oil, and freshens breath with fresh mint. It whitens naturally, polishes teeth, helps brush away plaque, and is free of dyes, SLS/sulfates, artificial sweeteners and flavors, microbeads, triclosan and gluten.

It is the Hello's latest additions to its #1 selling activated charcoal toothpaste line.

As for the taste, it actually featured fresh and minty notes — possibly even more so than my other mint toothpastes. And that was a conscious choice by Hello Products. “We think that anything that goes in your mouth should taste awesome, so our charcoal paste features a delicious blend of mint, spearmint, and peppermint,” founder Craig Dubitsky said.

Crest Gum Detoxify Deep Clean Toothpaste has an activated foam formula that penetrates hard to reach places to neutralize harmful plaque bacteria even around the gum line, for clinically proven healthier gums.

It is also formulated to cool gums during and after brushing for a refreshing clean.

If you love the feeling of lathering up your teeth, this foamy toothpaste delivers.

The Aquafresh Extreme Clean active foam reaches between teeth to remove plaque and food debris and maintain good oral hygiene by killing germs, fighting plaque, and deep cleaning.

The added foam also gets way back in your mouth, along your gums, and at the back of your tongue where foul-smelling bacteria can linger. However, if you have sensitive teeth, this toothpaste might be a little bit strong for you.

One of the best toothpaste for bad breath, you can buy this 3-pack for under $7.50.

#12. ARM & HAMMER Advanced White Extreme Whitening Toothpaste

($6.27 FROM Walmart - Get Up To 4% Cash Back)

ARM & HAMMER Advanced White Extreme Whitening Toothpaste, TWIN PACK (Contains Two 6oz Tubes) -Clean Mint- Fluoride Toothpaste

This Arm & Hammer toothpaste fights bad breath and whitens teeth in just six weeks.

Baking soda helps remove soft plaque and light staining, and it also has antibacterial properties to help prevent your teeth from decay.

Meanwhile, hydrogen peroxide is the active ingredient for tooth whitening. Note that because the hydrogen peroxide is a low percentage of active ingredients, it'll take some time to see results.

Customers say they are left with a whiter smile after using Arm & Hammer Advance White Extreme Whitening Toothpaste and it typically doesn’t cause sensitivity.

Not to mention that the tube is larger than most and rings in at a very affordable price.

But if you’re picky about taste, this might not be the toothpaste for you. The flavor is slightly odd and not the minty taste you're probably used to.
