How About Chanel 2.55 Bag?

The timeless Chanel 2.55—named for the bag's birthday, as it was created in February 1955—is a true investment piece. Coco Chanel created this iconic shoulder-strap design when she grew tired of carrying her bag on her forearm. (Fun fact: The interior pocket was meant to be used solely for carrying love letters).

Taken care of properly, this immaculate vintage gem—done in buttery, black lambskin leather—will last you a lifetime and never depreciate in value, financially or sartorially speaking: The iconic chain strap, double-C logo closure (introduced by Karl Lagerfeld in the 1980s), and diamond quilting never go out of style.

In 2005 Chanel releases the original 2.55 Quilted Handbag for its 50th Anniversary, and Karl Lagerfeld calls it the Reissue 2.55.  The Reissue was available in three colors: black with gold hardware, grey with silver hardware, and white with silver hardware, and 5 sizes: 224, 225, 226, 227, 228.

How Much are Chanel 2.55 Bags?

The Chanel 2.55 was first sold in 1955 for $220. Fast forward to 2024, and the same bag now sells for $10,200 and Chanel MINI 2.55 Handbags is $4,900.

How To Spot Fake Chanel 2.55 Bag?

1. The Overall of Chanel 2.55 Bag

(1) Overall shape of the bag - The authentic Chanel bag is slightly wider in dimension, especially at the bottom, and it has a trapezoid shape, while the fake bag is more of a rectangle.

However, please note that the overall shape of the bag may appear different depending on the contents and whether you are wearing it or letting it lay flat on a surface.

(2)The front flap - The authentic bag has it almost straight with a slight curve and narrow corners. On the fake it is more curved and slightly shorter than it should be (note how it ends further from the bottom of the bag).

Not only that, but it also appears to have an asymmetric shape. If you compare the left and the right ends of the flap, they have different heights. It is because one of the sides was stitched with more material so it hangs lower than the other. Of course, the authentic Chanel bag would be perfectly symmetrical.

2.The Material of Chanel 2.55 Bag

(1) Before Chanel 2.55 Bag's big debut in 1955, the bag’s previous version, worn by the designer since the 1920s, was initially made of quilted wool. However, for the official debut in February 1955, she opted for firmer MATERIALS, primarily black quilted leather with a diamond and herringbone pattern. It proved to be a timeless material that would suit its wearer’s style and taste, no matter the occasion.

(2)The Chanel 2.55 from the traditional house is made from very valuable and exclusive materials-mostly lamb leather. Therefore, a Chanel made of fake leather is to be classified as a fake. Of course, the Chanel 2.55 is aIso available in special fabric variants

(3) Do not forget that this model has a distressed “wrinkle” texture, which should be consistent for the whole bag. Not only that, but the leather should look a bit matte, but not dry. In the example below the fake is too glossy.

3.The Logo of Chanel 2.55

(1) The Chanel logo on the Chanel 2.55 consists of two interlocked letters that look away from each other. The right C always overlaps the left C from above and the left C always overlaps the right C from below. This rule only applies to the Chanel 2.55 and is not necessarily transferable to other products in the Chanel line. There may also be exceptions to limited or special edition parts.

(2) There is not much to point out about the inner CC logo stitching, except for the obvious difference in color. Other than that, the stitched logo looks thinner and the threads are also a wrong shade.

4.The Chanel 2.55 Interior

(1) Chanel 2.55 Bags are lined with high quality leather. The leather should be fitted tight with no creases, bumps, or bubbles. Even over time and with use, the lining in a genuine Chanel will not pull away or loosen from the sides.

(2) Every facet of the Chanel 2.55’s interior was designed for the busy woman on the go. The bag’s signature burgundy interior is the same color as the children’s uniforms Chanel once wore at the orphanage where she was raised. The color also provides a helpful contrast with a woman’s belongings, making them easy to spot in the bag’s dark confines. There are seven functional pockets, including one intended for lipstick. A zippered “secret pocket” on the underside of the interior flap is where Chanel stashed her love letters from international polo star Boy Capel.
(3) The 2.55 Chanel bag's second internal flap provides an additional measure of security and modesty as it secures the contents. This interior flap snaps, lending the bag significant structural support, so it retains its shape even after years of wear.

5.The Chanel 2.55 Exterior

(1) The Backside of the Chanel 2.55 Bag

Here you should once again pay attention to the shape. The original Chanel bag should not be shapeless, and the corners of the bag should be rounded, but the edges should be straight.

Next, examine the back pocket of the bag. The shape of it is incorrect. It should be more curved and rounded.

Finally, notice the metal holes on the top of the back plate, which are used for inserting metal chain hardware. In this replica model they are too big.

(2) The Side of the Chanel 2.55 Bag

As for the side view, we suggest you focus your attention on the structure of the bag.

One major flaw about most Chanel bag replicas is that they lack structure and tend to look slightly shapeless. This fake is no exception, and it becomes especially noticeable when looking at the bottom of the bag, which would be completely straight in the authentic and not curved.

The authentic bag should be firm, stand straight and maintain its shape. This general rule is true for all elements of the bag, however, it does not apply to the bottom of the bag, which we will discuss in a bit.

1684138610726927.png

(3) The Upper of the Chanel 2.55 Bag

In this method we should clearly spot one difference. The replica bag appears to be more folded, therefore, thinner at the top. Also, the folding line is more noticeable.

Not only that, but the chain straps start further back, unlike the authentic version.

1684138564763574.png

(4)The Bottom of Chanel 2.55 Bag

One trademark detail of authentic Chanel 2.55 bags is the foldability of the bottom. In other words, the bottom of the bag should not feel too stiff, and it should easily fold down. The fake bag, however, would remain firm at the bottom and maintain its shape.

The last small element to notice here is the middle stitch. On the replica it seems to be too deep.

6. The Brand Stamp of Chanel 2.55 Bag

(2) Every Chanel bag has the brand stamped onto the lining. Sometimes the brand name Chanel is stamped on an attached pouch of the same leather. The color of the brand stamp should perfectly match the color of your bag’s hardware.

(2) If your purse’s hardware is gold and the stamp is silver or a different-colored gold, then you’ve got a replica instead of a genuine Chanel purse.

7.The Hardware of Chanel 2.55 Bag

(1)  Iconic lock of Chanel 2.55

This iconic lock can also separate a genuine Chanel bag from a fake one. The Cs on vintage 2.55s have a flat finish and they also appear to be larger on the majority of vintage Chanel’s. Whereas more contemporary Chanel 2.55 bags have raised, rounded Cs. Replica locks can be as simple as the twist lock not moving swiftly or smoothly, as well as any form of crunch or spring indicating a cheaper mechanism and a fake.

One of the most notable details of this bag is the rectangular turnlock. First and foremost, the turnlock seems a bit bigger on the authentic. Furthermore, the fake bag has it too squeezed in the leather flap, thus creating wrinkles. It should not be this way, and the leather around the turnlock should be smooth.

Next, inspect the CHANEL lettering logo. In the replica it seems to be less printed in the metal, therefore, less visible.

Finally, of course, make sure that your turnlock works smoothly and is not crooked or unevenly shaped. Remember, authentic Chanel bags are almost flawless in their design, so there should not be any defects.

1684139322540381.png

(2) The Metal Snap Button

For the snap button, you should pay attention to the color. On the replica it seems to be of a shiny white gold color, while the original has less shiny yellow gold shade.

The stitching around the button looks strange too. It appears to be too squeezed in the leather and stitched in a different technique.

1684139418442575.png

(3)The chain of Chanel 2.55

The revolutionary shoulder strap was made from a metal chain fashioned to resemble the chain the orphanage’s caretakers used to carry keys in Chanel’s youth.

1684143690502817.png

The first thing we advise you to do when authenticating the chain hardware is to hold the chain in your hand. You should note that it is quite heavy. Next, if you have measuring tools nearby, you should carefully measure the length of the chain. It should be 11.5" (29 cm) doubled up and 20" (51 cm) as a single chain.

And last but not least, the pattern on some of the chains is unclear on the replica. In other words, the pattern was not properly squeezed in, which may be because the manufacturer considered this detail too insignificant to pay attention to.

8. The Stitching of Chanel 2.55 Bag

(1) The Chanel 2.55 bag’s iconic, diamond-pattern quilting was inspired by the quilted jackets jockeys wore in Chanel’s youth. Each bag is meticulously sewn, with every diamond perfectly formed and matched across seams and the bag’s flap. The perfection of the diamond pattern and stitching is key to authenticating a Chanel bag.

(2) In order to make an informed decision, it’s always better to count the stitches on each edge of the diamond. If the count is any amount less than 8, it is undoubtedly a fake. The real deal will always have a stitch count of 8 to 12 on each side of the diamond.

1684140589265615.png

9.The Serial Number for Chanel 2.55 Bags

(1) The  most inportant thing to look at is the authenticity code, which all genuine bags come with. For example, codes on a Chanel Classic 2.55 will be in the front left corner of the bag, and should always match the serial number inside the bag. Each serial number reflects when the bag was made – if a brand-new code has a serial number or sticker which reflected an older model, this will indicate a fake Chanel bag.

(3) However, it’s important to note that in the pre-owned market, people with larger collections may misplace the authentication card or muddle the wrong card with the wrong item. Therefore, verification can’t solely rely on serial numbers and authentication cards alone.

Below,we have provided a chart with the Chanel serial number format and their corresponding years of production. If you are curious about the production year of your Chanel piece, use the following chart to help you discover the year.

image.png

NOTE: Serial numbers from O series to 9 series included 7 digits, whereas serial numbers 10 series to present day include 8 digits.

10.The Authenticity Card of the Chanel 2.55

(1) With the purchase of a Chanel 2.55 (in an official shop) you also receive an authenticity card. This embossed card contains a serial number:It is a forgery if the Chanel 2.55 does not have a card, it is not embossed or does not contain a serial number.

The Chanel authenticity card itself should have:

  • A gold border – not a rainbow effect. The gold should be the same tone as the gold numbering.

  • If the bag was made after 2005, the card should have a grey circle in the top right corner.

  • A bag with a serial number dated pre-2005 that has a card featuring the grey circle, will most likely be a fake Chanel bag.

(2) To the untrained eye, the font and spacing of the gold lettering will seem unimportant, but to experts, it is an indication of a fake. Fakes are typically messy in style and care won’t have been taken to ensure continuity and symmetry across the sizing and formation of each letter and number.

(3) We take care to feel the thickness and texture of each Chanel authenticity card. Whilst the age of this card can impact its condition, we are cautious of cards that are too thin or bendy as they typically indicate a fake.

(4) If the card's serial number reflects a rainbow hologram under natural light, it is also not real.  But under the Ultraviolet  lamp, you can clearly see the double C logo, and you can see that one line of the small print underneath is illuminated.

1684141389405303.png

11. The Quilting of Chanel 2.55 Bag

(1) One of the first things we recommend looking at is quilting. Quilting is always symmetrical, and quilting will always or very closely line up.

(2) A vintage Chanel bag will typically be less pronounced due to usage and natural ageing, but if the diamond quilts are too ‘flat’ or too ‘puffy’, this will indicate poor quality and signal the item is a fake Chanel bag.

1684142000458107.png

12.The Dust Bag of the Chanel 2.55

(1)Chanel bags produced from 2000 onwards will always come with a black dust bag, while those made in the 80s and 90s will have a white one.

(2) As for the material, a genuine dust bag will be made of sturdy cotton with the word "Chanel" printed in white and centered on the bag. If the name is printed in off-white or with a thinner font, you should be suspicious.

(3) The stitching should be small and precise. The authentic dust bag is a thick black material with a  textured ribbon draw string. The fake one is more of a fleecy soft material with a string as the closure.

2.55 Handbag Authentication Tips:

  • Serial number should be found on the left hand, bottom corner.

  • CC front turn lock will be perfect. The right C with always over lap the left C on top. Then the left C will over lap the right.

  • CC turn lock can be raised or flat, but it will always have a flat edge finish, never rounded.

  • Back of turn lock will read “Chanel” engraved on the left, “Paris” engraved on the right, here is where you will see flat screw heads.

  • The back pockets have quilting and the quilts will match up exactly with the rest of the handbag. There are specific numbers of stitch depending on size and style of the Chanel bag.
