OnePlus 9 vs. 9 Pro vs. 9R vs. 8T  Overview

OnePlus 9

The OnePlus 9 Pro may be the premium choice for Android lovers, but don't overlook the OnePlus 9. The less expensive version of the new OnePlus flagship may lack some of the higher-end features of its sibling, such as a dynamically adjusting display, a telephoto lens and fast wireless charging, but the OnePlus 9 offers enough at a lower price to compete against some of the best Android phones out there.

The OnePlus 9 offers the features you've come to expect from OnePlus: solid battery life, fast charging and outstanding performance. But this latest phone goes a long way toward addressing a longtime Achilles' heel for OnePlus, because it improves  the quality of photos produced by the rear

Like the OnePlus 9 Pro, the OnePlus 9 is powered by the Snapdragon 888, the latest and greatest system-on-a-chip from Qualcomm. While it figures to find its way into most of the top Android phones later this year, the Snapdragon 888 is only in a handful of phones right now, such as Samsung's Galaxy S21 lineup and the new ROG Phone 5 gaming handset from Asus. As a result, the OnePlus 9's performance can match — and even beat — the top Android phones.

Should you buy the OnePlus 9?

Buy it if…

  • You want top specs at the most affordable price

The OnePlus 9 packs the best Android specs you can get in its price range right now, and it's a great-value phone.

  • You want a great photography experience for the price

If you’re hunting for the best Android camera phone at this price, and one that doesn’t skimp on specs (sorry, Google Pixel 5), the OnePlus 9 is worth considering.

  • You want a phone that charges in super-quick time

The OnePlus 9’s battery fully charges in under 30 minutes over a cable, and in 45 minutes using wireless charging. If you hate waiting for hours to charge your phone, you'll love the OnePlus 9.

Don’t buy it if…

  • You want high-quality zoom photography

The OnePlus 9 takes great photos with its main and ultra-wide cameras, but its zoom photography is limited to digital. If you want a phone with good telephoto capabilities for a similar price (in the US at least), pick up the Samsung Galaxy S21.

  • You want more storage

The OnePlus 9’s specs are great, but without expandable storage, its 128GB or 256GB internal memory is the limit. If you want more, pick up a phone with a microSD slot.

  • You want even more battery

Yes, there are phones with even bigger batteries than the OnePlus 9’s 4,500mAh capacity. If you want longer battery life, and can afford the extra outlay, pick up the Samsung S21 Ultra with its 5,000mAh battery, or Asus ROG 5 with its 6,000mAh capacity.

OnePlus 9 Pro

Source:oneplus.com

The OnePlus 9 Prodelivers a streamlined flagship experience to T-Mobile and Verizon subscribers, finally catching up to its competitors. The phone itself is light in the hand, and the user experience is weightless as well. The cameras take knockout photos in pretty much all conditions and the integrated fast charging is the best we've seen. The Galaxy S21 Ultra scores a bit better in our battery and wireless radio testing, works with Samsung's excellent S Pen stylus, and its camera offers killer optical zoom, so it just edges out the 9 Pro to be our Editors' Choice among flagship smartphones. Still, the OnePlus 9 Pro is outstanding. If you want a top-notch, loaded phone that makes your heart sing, you're now spoiled for choice.

Credit the improvements to the camera, resulting from OnePlus teaming up with Hasselblad. The partnership with the camera experts has produced a lot of little tweaks, such as the orange shutter button and the unique shutter sound.

But the changes introduced to the OnePlus 9 Pro involve more than superficial homages to the company’s new partner. While still just a bit shy of the best camera phones, the OnePlus 9 produces the best photos of any phone OnePlus has ever produced.

Should you buy the OnePlus 9 Pro?

Buy it if…

  • You need a powerful smartphone

The Snapdragon 888 chipset combined with 12GB of RAM has impressed us during our testing, and if you’re after a top-end phone with great power, the OnePlus 9 Pro fits the bill.

  • You want natural-looking photos

The results of OnePlus’s collaboration with Hasselblad are clear to see, with images having more lifelike colors than we’ve seen from previous OnePlus phones.

  • You want a great screen experience

The 6.7-inch 120Hz QHD display is among the best we’ve seen on a smartphone, with plenty of detail, strong brightness, and a variety of other tweaks.

Don’t buy it if...

  • You need lots of storage space

OnePlus hasn’t included microSD support on any of its phones to date, and it’s the same story with the OnePlus 9 Pro isn’t an exception.

  • You need super battery life

If you’re used to a smartphone that can last over a day, you’ll be disappointed with the OnePlus 9 Pro. The middling battery life won’t prove especially frustrating to most people, but neither is it going to impress you.

  • You want a cheaper smartphone

The OnePlus 9 Pro isn’t a cheap handset, costing as it does the equivalent of some of the very best phones from brands such as Apple and Samsung.

OnePlus 9R

With OnePlus maturing as a brand, there’s been a sharp increase in the sheer number of phones that the brand offers. It started off with the addition of the Pro series in 2019, but the family grew even larger with the introduction of the OnePlus Nord series. Now, joining an increasingly cluttered line-up, we have the OnePlus 9R.

The OnePlus 9R is, for all practical purposes, a OnePlus 8T redux. Like its spiritual predecessor, the phone is designed to bridge the gap between mid-rangers and the increasingly premium OnePlus flagships. While the specs list and design have received some tweaks, the OnePlus 9R also offers comparable performance to the OnePlus 8T. The biggest change, however, is that the phone is exclusive to India and China, the former of which is one of the most important markets for the country for market growth.

The raison d’être of the OnePlus 9R is simple. With flagship components getting more expensive and OnePlus aiming up north for a slice of the premium flagship category with the standard OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro, it needs something to slot in the value segment. The OnePlus 9R released in India on April 14, 2021. It’s available to buy from OnePlus, Amazon, and other retailers.

  • Lackluster cameras

  • No IP rating

Should you buy the OnePlus 9R?

Buy it if...

  • You want a cheap OnePlus flagship

The OnePlus 9R is significantly more affordable than its siblings, making it an easy recommendation for those who want a fairly high-end OnePlus phone without breaking the bank.

  • Fast charging is important to you

The 65W charging tech can charge the OnePlus 9R in about 35 minutes, which is among the fastest in the industry. You can use it while it’s being charged too.

  • You prefer compact phones

Most smartphones these days are quite big and bulky. This is especially true for gaming phones. Thankfully, the OnePlus 9R bucks this trend with its slim and light form factor.

Don't buy it if...

  • You want great cameras

Once again, cameras are the weakest point of the OnePlus 9R. Alternatives such as the Vivo X60 Pro, Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G and Xiaomi Mi 11X Pro are much better.

  • You want the best value for your money

The OnePlus 9R is far from the cheapest phone for the specs it offers. Devices such as the iQoo 7 and Xiaomi Mi 11X offer better bang for one’s buck.

  • You’re looking for a premium experience

Features such as wireless charging, an IP rating for water resistance, and telephoto cameras are all notably missing on the OnePlus 9R.

OnePlus 8T

1649309838426679.png

Source:oneplus.com

The OnePlus 8T is a $749 (now just $349) 5G phone that fits right in between the $699 OnePlus 8 ($529 at Amazon) and $799 OnePlus 8 Pro, which were released in April. (The OnePlus 8T's UK price of £549 converts to about AU$1,000.) The OnePlus 8T has a similar design to the 8, but carries over some of the better specs of the 8 Pro.

This premium hardware includes a silky 120Hz display and four cameras on the back. It also comes with a beefy 65-watt charger that juices up the phone quickly. The OnePlus 8T has a few software updates, too, including an always-on display and a refreshed interface, which will roll out to other OnePlus phones.

In and of itself, the OnePlus 8T is an excellent device and it'll surely satisfy anyone looking for a high-powered, reliable Android. The brilliant display is my favorite thing about the phone, but there's a more enticing and cheaper competitor available from OnePlus itself -- the OnePlus 8.

ProsCons
  • Bright and smooth 120Hz display

  • Super fast charging

  • Slick and unobtrusive software

  • Solid performance

  • Premium design

  • Feels too iterative compared to the Nord and OnePlus 9

  • Sub-par camera performance

Should you buy the OnePlus 8T?

Buy it if…

  • You love the OnePlus look and feel

OnePlus phones have a distinctive style, from software tweaks to bold color choices – this time around it’s Aquamarine Green.

  • You want a gorgeous screen

The resolution may not be the best on the market, but the OnePlus 8T has a screen that looks great thanks to its 120Hz refresh rate and strong brightness levels.

  • You need strong battery life

The OnePlus 8T isn’t going to last you two whole days from a full charge, but it’s rare that any phone without an exceptionally large battery is able to do that.

Don’t buy it if…

  • You need a cheap phone

OnePlus phones aren’t as affordable as they were when the company first started making them. The company has dropped the price from the OnePlus 8, but the OnePlus 8T price isn’t as low as some may hope for.

  • You want wireless charging

While OnePlus has brought wireless charging to the OnePlus 8 Pro, it hasn’t included it on other phones, including the 8T.

  • You need the best camera on the market

The OnePlus 8T has a capable rear camera that can take some great-looking shots, but you’re not getting the cutting-edge camera tech here that you’ll find on phones like the Samsung Galaxy S20 range or the Huawei P40 Pro.

Verdict

OnePlus 9

OnePlus 9 is most likely to appeal to brand enthusiasts first and foremost. It sports the same design, Hasselbrand branding, and other tagline features like a 120Hz display and ultra-fast charging as the more expensive OnePlus 9 Pro. It’s as close as you can get without spending 9 Pro money, although fans will have to accept the compromises to the camera setup and build materials in exchange for the more affordable price.

OnePlus 9 Pro

In its favor, the OnePlus 9 Pro enjoys an attractive design, an excellent display, smooth performance, and superb software. Toss in some of the fastest charging on the market and you have a winner. Most crucially, OnePlus made great strides with the camera, which was finally a competitive offering. It’s not the very best, but it significantly closed the gap between OnePlus and its competitors.

OnePlus 9R

The OnePlus 9R is a curious phone that makes me question the need for the regular OnePlus 9 in India. On paper, the 9R delivers much of the same at a significantly lower price than the OnePlus 9.I have no qualms recommending the OnePlus 9R if you want a direct upgrade from older OnePlus phones and don’t want to break the bank. But for most other buyers, it would be prudent to look at the numerous alternatives that leapfrog the OnePlus 9R.

OnePlus 8T

Build quality, performance, and 120Hz display are serious high points for the OnePlus 8T. If you’re looking to upgrade from a non-OnePlus phone, then the 8T is still difficult to recommend at the moment. It might beat the Galaxy S20 FE on paper, but Samsung’s phone is cheaper n the U.S. and delivers impressive performance; it can also match the OnePlus 8T’s 120Hz display while taking better pictures.

OnePlus 9 vs. 9 Pro vs. 9R vs. 8T: Which is right for you?

  • The OnePlus 9 Pro offers a larger, curved display, variable refresh rate, more capable camera, metal frame and waterproofing over the regular OnePlus 9. It also has faster wireless charging support, but you pay quite a bit extra for those features compared to the regular OnePlus 9.

  • When you consider the camera performance and how many important features are just as good on the regular OnePlus 9, it doesn't seem wise to spend the extra. At least, not until the company solves its camera problems.

  • The OnePlus 9R is only available in India, but it offers the same display and battery as the regular OnePlus 9. It doesn't have the Hasselblad partnership and it has a slightly lower processor, but otherwise it offers some great specs under its hood for the price.

  • The OnePlus 8T  has the same battery capacity as the 9 and 9 Pro though, as well as the same RAM and storage options. The 8 Pro also has waterproofing like the 9 Pro.

Conclusion

The decision between these devices is likely to come down to price, as well as what features are most important to you. If you want the latest design and features like a variable refresh rate then the 9 Pro is likely the one for you, but if you want to save some money, then it's well worth considering the 9 or 8T.
