iPhone 13 vs. 13 Mini vs. 13 Pro vs. 13 Pro Max: Camera, Size, Battery, Price

Apple’s iPhone 13 series devices are now official. Like the iPhone 12 series, it is available in four sizes: iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max with different prices, and features. With multiple versions to choose from, so it can be difficult to determine which one is right for you. That’s where the guide comes in. Here I have run up the specs (including camera, size, battery, price) for the iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max to see what each model is for and the differences between them all. Let’s dive in.

iPhone 13 Series Overview

 iPhone 13

The iPhone 13 is the model that most people are likely to get – not too small and not too large. It comes with a 6.1-inch 60Hz display, and offers longer battery life, improved cameras, and better durability versus the iPhone 12.

 iPhone 13 Mini

The iPhone 13 mini is the most affordable and smallest phone in the bunch, but that doesn't mean its dual-camera system or performance is any lesser than on the iPhone 13, in fact, the two are about equal in everything but size. The mini doesn't last as long in terms of battery though.

 iPhone 13 Pro

The iPhone 13 is the same size as the iPhone 13 Pro model, but the Pro model has a more advanced rear camera setup, as well as a more premium finish and different color options. It also has different storage options, the additional LiDAR sensor, a faster GPU, a display with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz and it's pricier.

 iPhone 13 Pro Max

iPhone 13 Pro Max is the biggest and most expensive model in the iPhone 13 series.  It's basically an upscaled version of the iPhone 13 Pro. Like that model, storage options for the Pro Max extend to a whopping 1TB for the first time.

What's the Same on the iPhone 13 models?

OLED Display Panels

All iPhone 13 models feature the same OLED displays with True Tone, Haptic Touch, and HDR support. OLED is a display technology known for producing vivid colors and pitch blacks, unlike conventional LCD smartphone displays.

A15 chip

The A15 chip on all iPhone 13 models comes with a 6-core CPU, 2 high-performance cores, 4 high-efficiency cores, a 4-core GPU (5-core on the Pro models), and a 16-core Neural Engine.

Front Camera

All iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max have a 12-megapixel front camera with the same features, including Night mode, Deep Fusion, and Photographic Styles.

iOS 15 Software

The iPhone 13 series will come with iOS 15 out of the box. iOS 15 is packed with new features that help you connect with others, be more present and in the moment, explore the world, and use powerful intelligence to do more with iPhone than ever before.

MagSafe Charging Tech

All iPhone 13 models support Apple's own MagSafe Charger at up to 15W speeds, and all support MagSafe accessories like the MagSafe Battery Pack.

Lightning Port
The iPhone 13 lineup continues to use Apple's proprietary Lightning port as opposed to USB Type-C for charging or wired file transfers.

5G Compatible
The iPhone 13 series also joins the ranks of devices with access to 5G. From iPhone 13 mini to iPhone 13 Pro Max, all members of the iPhone 13 family support 5G, meaning you'll have 5G reception with all models wherever your phone provider supports it.

IP68 Water and Dust Resistant

The iPhone 13 lineup have a rating of IP68 under IEC standard 60529 (maximum depth of 6 meters up to 30 minutes).

The Difference on the iPhone 13 Models

Whilst the four new iPhones have some similarities, there are of course a number of differences:

GPU

While all four of the iPhone 13 models run on the A15 chip and next-generation 16-core Neural Engine, the iPhone 13 Pro models offer a faster GPU with five cores over the standard iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini's four cores. In use though, all four iPhone 13 models offer swift performance with no issues switching between tasks.

Physical Size and Weight
The four new iPhones all vary in physical dimensions. The iPhone 13 mini is the smallest and lightest, while the iPhone 13 Pro Max is the largest and heaviest. The standard iPhone 13 and the iPhone 13 Pro have identical measurements, but the Pro is a little heavier.

Model

iPhone 13 Pro146.7 x 71.5 x 7.65mm204g
iPhone 13 Pro Max160.8 x 78.1 x 7.65mm240g

Colors

The iPhone 13 color options range from the familiar Product Red to new and exciting ones like Sierra Blue. However, it's worth noting that not all color options are available for every iPhone 13 model; some colors are only available to the iPhone 13 Pro models.

Display

All four versions of the iPhone 13 are thicker and heavier than their counterpart in last year's lineup, but the notch is 20% smaller than it was on the iPhone 12. The iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max come with twice as smooth 120Hz displays as their predecessors. However, the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini remain with 60Hz displays. The number of hertz a phone screen is able to display refers to its number of frames per second, which determines how fast and smooth the screen feels when you're scrolling through apps and web pages.

Thanks to their high peak brightness, which is 800 nits on the iPhone 13 and mini, 1000 nits on the iPhone 13 Pro models, they are all perfectly visible even in direct sunlight. And when viewing HDR content, their peak brightness jumps to 1200 nits.

Cameras

As you might expect, the rear camera setup is one of the main differentiating features between the iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 13 and the Pro models. The iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 13 have a dual rear camera, comprised of a 12-megapixel main camera with f/1.6 aperture and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera with an f/2.4 aperture. The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max have a triple rear camera. Both have a 12-megapixel main camera with f/1.5 aperture, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera with f/1.8 aperture, and a 12-megapixel telephoto camera with f/2.8 aperture. The telephoto lens offers 3x optical zoom.

The iPhone 13 series now have the same sensor-shift stabilization technology that was previously limited to the iPhone 12 Pro models. Sensor-shift stabilization physically moves camera sensors to remove vibrations that blur or distort photos. They also all have Smart HDR 4 for photos, Portrait Mode with advanced bokeh and Depth Control, Night Mode, and Deep Fusion. In addition,  Apple is introducing a new Cinematic Mode for shooting video.  It shoots in Dolby HDR and allows for a slick new automatic (or manual) rack focus mode that lets you change focus even after shooting.

Similar to the iPhone 12 lineup, the lidar scanner is still only available on the Pro and Pro Max. Macro photography also only comes on the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max models. Their ultra-wide camera can focus on objects as close as 2 cm from the lens. The Pro models are also able to shoot in ProRes—the video equivalent of Apple’s ProRAW photography format for higher-quality shooting and editing. You can record up to 4K at 30fps in ProRes directly in the Camera app.

In addition, the Pro models support 3x optical zoom in, 2x optical zoom out, 15x digital zoom, while iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini only support 2x optical zoom, 5x digital zoom.

Battery Life

Thanks to the more energy-efficient Apple A15 Bionic chip and their bigger batteries, the new iPhone 13 series perform notably better in terms of battery life than their predecessors, according to Apple.

Apple claims that the iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 13 Pro will get, on average, 1.5 hours more battery life in a typical day than the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro. The iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro Max do even better, with a claimed improvement of 2.5 hours more battery life.

Price and Storage

The price of each iPhone 13 model depends on the storage option you choose. Apple has ditched its 64GB storage option for its new iPhone. The standard iPhone 13 and Mini now come in 128GB, 256GB and 512GB storage options, while the Pro and Pro Max also come in a 1TB storage option. This is the first time you have the option to get 1TB of storage on an iPhone.

The iPhone 13 Mini starts at $699 for 128GB of storage. The standard iPhone 13 starts at $799, the Pro starts at $999, and Pro Max at $1,0999.  Below are the iPhone 13 prices for each available storage option.

Verdict

iPhone 13 Mini vs. iPhone 13 vs. iPhone 13 Pro vs. iPhone 13 Pro Max: Which One Should you Choose?

The iPhone 13 model that's right for you will depend on what size device you want and how much certain features mean to you. I think that most people will be very happy with the iPhone 13.  Because it has a great balance of power, features, and battery life for the price. But If you like pint-size phones, the iPhone 13 mini is the way to go.

If you’re a creative professional, gamer, or person who likes to take photos, your best bet is probably the iPhone 13 Pro which has a  better GPU, cameras, and a large display with ProMotion. If you have enough budget and like the 6.7-inch large screen , then buy the iPhone 13 Pro Max directly.
