AKASO Brave 8, GoPro HERO10 and DJI Osmo Action Cameras Review

| #1 AKASO Brave 8

The AKASO Brave 8 is an action camera that combines an affordable price with great features and decent video quality. It comes with dual screens and touch zoom that allow you to capture all the action at the touch of a button. The vivid front screen is perfect for selfies while the rear touch screen gives you the power to capture what’s in front of you your way! The AKASO Brave 8 also features a powerful 1/2" CMOS image sensor and Quad Pixel technology teamed with a unique 9-layer array of glass lenses, which allows you to capture every special/stunning details of your next adventure. In addition, it's most advanced image stabilization, SuperSmooth is an upgraded in-app algorithm that takes image stabilization to the next level. So you can shoot action-packed image and video with gimbal-like steadiness.

Whether you're swimming, surfing, diving, or participating in any watersport, this waterproof action camera can handle it. It is made waterproof-rough up to 33ft (10m) without a case. In a word, as the latest of the Akaso action camera series, the Akaso Brave 8 is a lovely camera that packs in a lot of great, useful features and comes with some very handy accessories(including hardware for mounting the camera, a physical remote control). It makes a cracking, cheaper alternative to the latest GoPro cameras all the while delivering very similar results.

| #2 GoPro HERO 10 Black

The GoPro HERO10 Black is the best action camera you can get. It is very light, weighing only 153g and has a removable lens cover.Though looking identical to the Hero9 Black in almost every way, the Hero10 Black is nevertheless a significant upgrade. That’s all down to its use of the all-new GP2 processor, which powers both a speedy user interface, doubles the frame rates and fuels the best image stabilization tech yet. Upgraded to incredible 23MP photos and 5.3K video resolution at 60fps, HERO10 offers double the frame rate for amazingly smooth motion. Plus, there’s 8x slo-mo at 2.7K and you can pause videos and grab 15.8MP still photos from 5.3K video that look amazing. It also performs better in poor light conditions for example during dusk, sunset or while in a forest.

You can also not underestimate the usefulness of  GoPro HERO 10 Black’s new HyperSmooth 4.0 video stabilization – in all modes. With the upgraded image stabilization, you can now tilt the camera as much as 45 degrees and it will still smooth things out for you.   In addition, the GoPro Hero 10 Black also has five different digital lens simulation modes to achieve different fields of view.  It also adds a nifty cable for super-quick camera-to-app content transfer and auto-upload of videos and photos to the cloud while it recharges. The GoPro HERO10 Black is also waterproof to an advertised depth of 33 feet and has a front-facing screen that lets you monitor yourself in Live View while recording. But its battery life is unremarkable. It can sometimes overheat and shut down when recording continuously for longer periods.  Despite that, however, GoPro HERO 10 is one of the best action cameras, thanks to its wide range of frame rate options, durable build quality, and stabilization performance.

| #3  DJI Osmo Action

DJI is best known for producing some of the best drones around  and the Osmo Action was its first action camera which measures 2.56 x 1.65 x 1.38 inches and weighs 4.4 ounces. The body of this action camera is mostly made of solid metal which already tells that this camera is one of the most strong and durable ones. The heavy-duty watertight construction and special coating on the touchscreen allows the camera to be waterproof at 11 meters underwater. This means that it will be perfect for boatmen and surfers. One of the most striking features in the design of the Osmo Action camera is its dual screens – one each at the front and the back. The front screen lets you frame yourself effortlessly making it perfect for vlogging & selfies, while the back screen delivers a crystal-clear & hyper-responsive display.

This camera lets you select and adjust settings and modes - color, contrast, exposure, shooting modes, etc. The ones that are most frequently used can be saved, stored and selected. The lens has 3 aspherical layers to reduce glare and distortion, and with a fixed aperture of 2.8, this action camera captures beautifully clear and bright images. In addition, recordings with this camera are brought to you on 4K HDR, which makes the video very life-like and the angle of recording works at 145 degrees. The slow-motion feature doesn’t miss on this one either, it also can record on 8x slow motion at 1080 pixels and at 240fps. With RockSteady technology, an improved form of Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS), Osmo Action makes sure that no matter how heavy the action is, you’ll get a buttery stable and shake-free footage. The battery life of the DJI Osmo Action allows you usage for a whole day of short footage of video. What's the pity is that the DJI Osmo Action has no underwater mode for accurate white balance and no HDR mode for stills. Another disappointment is the absence of HDMI out, which GoPro supports. Also, there’s no face tracking feature in this camera.

Easy-to-use menus
No GPS or HDMI port

Exceptional 4K UHD video and photo

No stabilisation in HDR mode
Handy front displayThe app needs some work
Very good stabilisation
Very high frame rate in slow-motion
 Robust and water-resistant
Fairs well in most weather conditions

AKASO Brave 8 vs. GoPro HERO10 vs. DJI Osmo Action: Verdict

There is no doubt that GoPro Hero 10 Black remains the biggest name in action camcorders.  It looks a lot like the Hero 9, but upgrade the stability to HyperSmooth 4.0., rolls video with more pixels and double the frame rate,  making it the best action camera yet on the market.

The DJI Osmo Action still gives you excellent image quality, incredible 4K video at 60 fps for some of the smoothest results, several different shooting modes, and a great dual display, but its stabilization isn't quite as good as rival GoPro Hero10 Black.  If you are limit to budget, the DJI Osmo Action is the best cheap action cameras for you.

The Akaso Brave 8 is also a cheap alternative to  the GoPro Hero 10 Black. It offer a great feature set and value for its price. If you specifically need to shoot 8K timelapse video, the Akaso Brave 8 is more suitable for you than the DJI Osmo Action.
