The design of the Fitbit Charge 5 is more stylish and elegant than that of its predecessors. Charge 5 packs a colour display for the first time and it’s twice as bright then the grayscale of its predecessors. There’s also an ambient light sensor which automatically adjusts brightness. This allows you to enjoy checking your health statistics and smartphone notifications even more. The Fitbit Charge 5 is available in three colors: black, lunar white, and steel blue. All versions have a silicone Infinity Band, which uses a soft loop and tang rather than a hard buckle, which is more comfortable to wear while sleeping.

The Fitbit Charge 5 has no physical buttons, but there’s an oval sensor on each side of the case for the watch’s ECG and EDA apps. On the rear of the watch you’ll find the usual optical heart rate sensor, plus the contacts for the charger.

The Fitbit Charge 3 and Charge 4 are virtually identical in design. The design of the Charge 4 isn't very different from that of the Charge 3, but the Charge 4 is a lot lighter. It weighs only 26g, so you'll hardly feel it on your wrist while working out.

The Charge 4 and the Charge 3 have a black and white screen, so your information and messages won't look as vibrant on your screen like on the color screen of the Charge 5.

From the above table, it can be seen that all three Fitbit Charge devices here have an optical heart rate monitor, offering automatic and continuous heart rate tracking. They also all have an accelerometer, altimeter and vibration motor. Each also finds room for relative SpO2 sensors, too, allowing users to view a graph in the Fitbit app to see an estimate of the oxygen level variability in your bloodstream, which is designed to help show variations in your breathing during sleep.

However, the Charge 5 is the only device to feature an EDA sensor and the Fitbit ECG app. The former is able to detect small changes in your finger's sweat glands, and as a result, stress level changes, while ECG readings are able to detect the heart's rhythm and check for signs of atrial fibrillation.

About GPS

  • The Charge 3: Connected GPS

  • The Charge 4 and Charge 5: Built-in GPS

In terms of location tracking, Charge 3 only offers connected GPS. This uses your smartphone for the GPS signal, meaning you'll need to bring it with you when you go for a run or walk if you want detailed map data. The Charge 4 and Charge 5, however, offer built-in GPS and result in untethered tracking. There are seven GPS-enabled exercise modes to choose from.

About NFC

All three also have NFC on board, allowing you to pay with your activity tracker at contactless terminals through Fitbit Pay. While the NFC chip comes as standard on the Charge 4 and Charge 5, though, it's only available in the Special Edition models of the Charge 3.

Fitbit Charge 5 vs. Charge 4 vs. Charge 3: Battery Life

Fitbit Charge 5

Battery life of up to 7 days. Use of the always-on display and SpO2 features will require more frequent charging. We recommend charging your tracker every few days to ensure you are always tracking.

Fitbit Charge 4

Charge 4 and Charge 5 have a battery life of up to 4 days. If you use built-in GPS continuously, Charge 4 and Charge 5 have a battery life of up to 5 hours, Ionic has a battery life of up to 10 hours. Sense, Sense 2, Versa 3, and Versa 4 have a battery life of up to 12 hours.

Fitbit Charge 3

The battery in Fitbit Charge 3 can last approximately 7 days. Because battery life is affected by use and other settings, actual results may vary.

Fitbit Charge 5 vs. Charge 4 vs. Charge 3: Verdict

Thanks to the heart rate recovery function, the EDA sensor that measures stress management, the color screen, and the stylish design, the Fitbit Charge 5 is a worthy successor of the Charge 4 and 3.

With the Charge 4, however, extra features like Spotify control and built-in GPS that's a very solid model. The Fitbit Charge 4 is being an attractive purchase, as it will see an inevitable fall in price. If you can live without a colour display and the ECG/EDA features, it remains a viable option.

Lastly, We don't recommend the Fitbit Charge 3, it's really outdated.
