Angel Soft vs. Charmin vs. Quilted Northern vs. Cottonelle Toilet Paper: Which is the Best?

Toilet paper is an essential product in any bathroom. The average American uses an astounding 141 rolls of toilet paper a year. If you’re going through that much tissue, I think it’s worth settling on a brand you actively like and trust. After all, you're going to apply toilet paper to some of the most sensitive areas of your body, you want it to treat you right. However, with so many types of toilet paper on the market, it can be tough to determine which brand and style is best for you. In this guide, I researched the four popular toilet papers brands: Angel Soft, Charmin, Quilted Northern and Cottonelle to help you find the product that’s right for you.

  • Angel Soft

Angel Soft Brand History and Origin

Angel Soft is the largest toilet paper brand in the U.S. with a revenue of $1.22 billion. It has been delivering the same reliable softness and strength that meets your home and family's needs, day after day for several decades. Angel Soft is owned by Georgia-Pacific LLC, an American pulp and paper company. Georgia-Pacific is one of the largest manufacturers and distributors of tissue, paper, pulp, toilet, and paper towel dispensers, packaging, building products, and related chemicals in the world.

In 1987, Angel Soft Toilet Paper lands on store shelves and becomes a part of modern toilet paper history. In 2015, Angel Soft introduced its Fresh Scented Lavender Tube and has since added other fresh smelling fragrances. Whether you choose regular Angel Soft, Angel Soft Ultra or Angel Soft with Scented Tube, each roll delivers just the right amount of softness at a reasonable value.  The company also promises sustainability by focusing on driving conservation activities to help leave more resources available for society.

Angel Soft Toilet Paper Review

Angel Soft offers three different types of toilet paper. The Regular Angel Soft Toilet Paper is the perfect balance of softness and strength in a mega roll that just keeps rolling.  The Angel Soft with Fresh Scented Tube Toilet Paper is a simple balance of softness, strength, and heaven scent freshness makes your bathroom more welcoming and pleasant than ever. The Angel Soft Ultra Toilet Paper is even more softer and stronger than the regular Angel Soft.

I would plant Angel Soft brand toilet paper firmly as a middle of the road brand. It received very average scores in almost all categories. The embossed texture looks sparse and crude next to Quilted Northern. Although it’s double-ply, I found the Angel Soft to be somewhat thin, making it less durable than the competition. Plus, it didn't hold up for long when wet, either, dissolving in just over 30 seconds. For this reason, I have given it special recognition for the appeal it will have for those with less than robust plumbing.

The Prices of Angel Soft Toilet Paper: The Regular Angel Soft from $6.68; The Angel Soft Ultra from $33.47; The Angel Soft with Scented Tube from $24.90

  • Charmin

Charmin Brand History and Origin

The Charmin was created in 1928 by the Hoberg Paper Company in Green Bay, Wisconsin. In 1950, the name was changed to Charmin Paper Company and produced bath tissue, paper napkins, among other paper products.  Procter & Gamble (P&G) acquired Charmin Paper Company in 1957. Charmin’s always been known to be soft like a baby’s bottom. That’s exactly why they added a soft squishy baby to their packaging to symbolize its gentle cushiness.5.png

Charmin Toilet Paper Review

Lots of toilet paper brands claim to be super plush, but nothing I have tried comes close to the softness of Charmin. Charmin offers three types oftoilet paper. The Charmin Ultra Soft Toilet Paper is exactly what the branding suggests — it is among the softest in the class. With their wavy edge, you’ll get a smoother tear for an even better ‘go’! Plus, it is 2X more absorbent so you can use less than the leading bargain brand.  The Charmin Ultra Soft toilet paper tooks just under a minute to dissolve in water, which means it will fall apart in the toilet (key for avoiding potential septic issues) but not while you're doing your thing. It is the brand's highest-selling product by revenue. Although the Ultra Strong roll from Charmin is more heavy duty, extended use made it clear that the supreme comfort of the Ultra Soft is more important.

The Charmin Ultra Strong Toilet Paper is exactly what it sounds like—ultra strong.  It is Charmin’s strongest 2-ply toilet paper and, like Charmin Ultra Soft, is clog-safe, septic-safe, and Roto-Rooter plumber approved. The Charmin Ultra Strong Toilet Paper has a diamond weave texture and is touted as a cleaner toilet paper. In addition to being soft and ultra-durable, this brand of toilet paper claims to be four times stronger when wet, with a washcloth-like texture that doesn't break apart like some other brands do. Though pricier than most, its effectiveness per sheet tilts the value equation back in its favor a little bit.

The Charmin Essentials Soft Toilet Paper is softer than, but available at, a similar price to the leading bargain brand. In terms of texture, the Charmin Essentials Soft Toilet Paper is closest to Charmin Ultra Strong, but it's not nearly as durable. During testing, Charmin Essentials wore out slightly more than Charmin Ultra Strong. The big issue I had with Charmin Essentials is that a single square took nearly two minutes to dissolve in water, which means you could potentially end up with plumbing issues if flushes aren't properly spaced out.

The Prices of Charmin Toilet Paper: The Charmin Ultra Soft from $8.37; The Charmin Ultra Strong from $8.37; The Charmin Essentials Soft from $11.52

  • Quilted Northern

Quilted Northern Brand History and Origin

Like Angel Soft, Quilted Northern is owned by Georgia-Pacific LLC, an American pulp and paper company. Quilted Northern is the second of their toilet paper brands and is marketed and sold as a premium offering compared to Angel Soft. Their toilet paper features soft, durable layers that flex and hold up for a perfect balance of comfort and strength.

The Quilted Northern toilet paper is described as a premium product designed with the environment in mind and offers completely biodegradable rolls for safe septic use. By planting 2 trees for every 1 used, Quilted Northern have planted over 5 million trees since 2020 through their partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation .

Quilted Northern Toilet Paper Review

Like Angel Soft, Quilted Northern offers three different types of toilet paper. The Quilted Northern Ultra Soft & Strong toilet paper are welcomed by people, thanks to its comfortable texture and strength. It offers a comfortable clean you can count on with its signature 2-ply softness and flexible strength. When you rubbed a square of it against some coarse surfaces, it left a modicum of piling, but not much at all. It is 5X stronger and more durable than the leading value brand of toilet paper when wet. Ultimately, this toilet paper was both strong and soft, but it wasn’t quite as comfortable to use repeatedly as the Charmin Ultra Soft.

The Quilted Northern Ultra Plush is the softest and most luxurious bath tissue yet from this brand. The embossed design of Quilted Northern Ultra Plush Toilet Paper is mottled, dimensional and finely executed. It not only looks like the nicest, it feels like it too. The fluff factor is high, and the toilet paper feels silky to the touch. Air pockets between its indulgent three plies give the roll a pleasant pushback when squeezed. There’s no mistaking the luxurious feel of Quilted Northern Ultra Plush toilet paper, thanks to sheets that are 3x thicker and 3x more absorbent than the leading value brand. On the durability side of things, however, the paper didn’t stay intact as well as the top Charmin options did. Although it held together well on the coarse surface, it didn't hold up perfectly on the everyday tests. It also took a minute and forty seconds to dissolve in water.

The Quilted Northern Ultra Plush with Sweet Lilac & Vanilla Scented Tube is everything you love about our luxuriously soft 3-ply toilet paper with the subtle scent of sweet lilac and warm vanilla added to the tube — for the perfect finishing touch. The toilet paper with a scented tube is the perfect way to pamper you  with a sensorial bathroom experience.

The Prices of Quilted Northern Toilet Paper: The Quilted Northern Ultra Soft & Strong from $13.63; The Quilted Northern Ultra Plush from $6.98.

Cottonelle Toilet Paper Review

Cottonelle only offers two different types of toilet paper. The Cottonelle Ultra Clean Toilet Paper is designed for cleaning. It features unique CleaningRipples Texture to help you clean more at once for a confident clean.  From a texture standpoint, this toilet paper is extremely comfortable to use.  It's also surprisingly thick and sturdy considering it's a single-ply paper. Plus, the Cottonelle Ultra CleanCare Toilet paper is septic and sewer safe.

The Cottonelle Ultra Comfort Toilet Paper is designed for skin comfort  and is Cottonelle's softest toilet paper. Ultra Comfort features unique CleaningRipples™ Texture to help you absorb moisture for a comfortable clean. It tied with Quilted Northern Ultra Plush in multiple categories like wet strength, absorption, dry lint and width. The SafeFlush technology makes it safe for sewer and septic systems, so it will disintegrate quickly after it is fully immersed in the toilet. This makes it especially ideal for people with sensitive skin, notes Marisa Garshick, MD, dermatologist at Medical Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery in New York City.

The Prices of Cottonelle Toilet Paper: The Cottonelle Ultra Clean Toilet Paper from $6.98; The Cottonelle Ultra Comfort Toilet Paper from $6.98.

Bottom Line

Angel Soft vs. Charmin vs. Quilted Northern vs. Cottonelle Toilet Paper: Which is the Best?

With no doubt, Angel Soft, Charmin, Quilted Northern and Cottonelle are four of the highest rated and most well known toilet paper brands by consumers across markets. So you won’t feel bad by choosing either brand. As for which brand is best for you, it probably depends on your needs.

Sheer comfort and excellent durability combined make Charmin Ultra Soft the best toilet paper to use every day. It is clear to you that Charmin Ultra Soft is the toilet paper to buy if you have sensitive skin and are looking for a best soft, absorbent toilet paper.

The Quilted Northern toilet paper doesn’t skimp on size, number of plies or softness. The Quilted Northern Ultra Plush is the only triple-ply toilet paper I used, and it really is ultra-plush. So if you want to experience luxury, The Quilted Northern Ultra Plush is worth buying.

The Cottonelle toilet paper features a rippled texture to help clean. Plus, its slightly elastic feel is also unique, a quality that makes the paper feel extra strong. It lends a paper towel-like feel, thicker and more robust than the other brands. If you are looking for the best durability and strongest cleaning ability toilet paper, I recommend the Cottonelle toilet paper for you.

The Angel Soft is more economical than many other leading brands, and it’s a terrific option for those who want softness and strength without spending too much. Plus, the Angel Soft Toilet Papers is safe for use in both septic and sewer systems. It is also a good choice for those a little concerned about their plumbing but still want a decently performing product.
