Instant Pot Pro Crisp vs. Duo Crisp vs. Duo Crisp with Ultimate Lid: Differences & Reviews 2024

Instant Pot Pro Crisp vs. Duo Crisp vs. Duo Crisp with Ultimate Lid: Differences & Reviews 2024

Air fryers have become a must-have for many home cooks. They're loved for mimicking the effects of oil-free frying, all thanks to their cooking mechanism. Unlike toasters, which use a single heating element on the top or bottom of the machine to cook food, air fryers are essentially countertop convection ovens that cook food from all angles using a heating element and a powerful fan. The Instant Pot Crisp is the brand's multi-function cooker that combines air frying and pressure cooking with a host of other functions. Plus, you'll find many classic Instant Pot functions, including slow cooker, sauté, steam, and more. If you're looking for the best pressure cookers and air fryers for your kitchen, this guide can help you decide which model of Instant Pot is best for you so you can start cooking.

Editor's review:

The Duo Crisp with Ultimate Lid Multi-Cooker model has the most features of any Instant Pot on the market, including air frying. But the real selling point is the ultimate lid.

At the moment, multi-cookers such as these come with two separate lids that you have to swap in and out depending on whether you’re “wet” cooking (pressure cook, slow cook, steam etc) or “dry” cooking (air fry, grill, bake etc). While it doesn’t take up a huge amount of time to make the swap, it does add to the amount of storage space you need – and these are big, heavy lids.

The ‘Ultimate Lid’ part means you can use the various functions without swapping between lids as you do with the regular Duo Crisp. This is much more convenient and it means you don’t need to find additional storage space for different lids.

It’s also done away with the steam release handle, with this now being fully controlled via buttons. On-screen instructions have also been improved to make pressure cooking and other modes a little less intimidating.

The Duo Crisp has just about every cooking feature you could ever need, and the results are impressive. Testing it for air frying had great results: the chicken was very juicy, the juiciest meat I've ever seen for air frying, and while the outside might not be as crispy as it would be in the oven, it still cooked perfectly.

All of this explains why this cooker costs more than other air fryers, but it can be well worth the outlay.

Pros:

  • With this model, there’s no longer a need to switch between lids for different types of cooking.

  • Supremely versatile

  • Fast cooking times

  • Excellent results

  • Generous capacity

  • Saves space (it combines an Instant Pot and air fryer)

  • Easy-to-read digital control panel

  • Easy-to-use steam release settings

Cons:

  • This one only comes in one size (which is half a quart bigger than the standard 6-quart).

  • Expensive if you’ll mainly use the air fryer mode

  • Little guidance or instructions

  • Air frying takes 5 minutes to preheat

  • Sizes available: 6- and 8-quart Instant Pots

Editor's review:

If you’re an avid fan of Instant Pot’s multi-cookers, then you probably know that Instant Pot has an Instant Pot Duo Crisp, the dream kitchen appliance that adds an air frying functionality to their famous multi-cooker.

This excellent 11-in-1 pressure cooker was the first Instant Pot model to offer an air-frying function by way of a second (included) air-fryer lid, and until the Instant Pot Pro Crisp + Air Fryer came along, this model was the Ninja Foodi’s fiercest competitor.

When you’re done frying, you can simply switch back to the standard lid for pressure-cooking, steaming, sautéing, and more.

The Instant Pot Duo Crisp and Air Fryer looks simple with its trademark stainless steel exterior, LCD display and streamlined touch control pad.

You can manually adjust the temperature and cooking duration using the buttons on either side of the LCD display. The dry cook functions can be set to a temperature between 84C – 204C while the wet cook functions offer Hi or Lo temperatures.

The 8-quart size provides a generous capacity for families or handling large quantities. However, the cooker is bulky, and you will need storage space to house the two lids, and accessories that come with it.

In addition to being originally released in November 2019 as an 8 quart, Instant brands released a smaller 6 quart exclusive to Walmart later.

Space aside, the Instant Pot Duo Crisp and Air Fryer performs well at its main functions such as pressure cooking, but you may need to experiment a few times with the steaming and air frying settings.

Pros:

  • 11 cooking features

  • Has an air fryer function

  • User friendly

  • Easy to clean

  • Large capacity for families

Cons:

  • No preset programs

  • Lack of recipes

  • Lids and accessories can take up storage space

  • Air fryer basket too small

Comes with Everything: Instant Pot Pro Crisp + Air Fryer 11-in-1

The Instant Pot Air Fryer Duo Crisp is best for: a home cook who wants the Instant Pot Duo Crisp with the Ultimate lid, but doesn’t want to spend quite so much on a pressure cooker.

Instant Pot® Pro™ Crisp & Air Fryer 8-quart Multi-Use Pressure Cooker and Air Fryer

  • Year released: 2020

  • Built-in smart programs: 11

  • Cooking functions: Pressure-cooking, slow-cooking, steaming, sautéing, food-warming, sous vide cooking, air-frying, roasting, baking, broiling, and dehydrating

  • Power: 1,500 watts

  • Max working pressure: 11.6 PSI

  • Sizes available: 8-quart Instant Pot

Editor's review:

The Pro Crisp is a slight upgrade on the Instant Pot Duo Crisp. They both have the same eleven cooking functions, same 8 quart/ 8-liter capacity, and the same accessories included in the box. However, the Instant Pot Pro Crisp comes with silicone handles on the cooking pot for easy lifting, and has a number of features to make releasing the steam and pressure much simpler.

The inner pot is also stove-top and oven safe (up to 450ºF). In other words, if you want more control with the heat, simply use your oven range with the same vessel.

The Pro Crisp also has a bigger LED display screen that features a cooking progress bar, plus there’s a dial for easier time and temperature customization.

The Pro Crisp also highlights a separate switch for steam release. Therefore, when you need to open the vent, it’ll be safer and easier since you don’t need to directly touch the vent.

The air fry function means there are two separate lids to store, so it’s bulkier than a standard multi-cooker.

With its black finish and larger LED display screen the Instant Pot Pro Crisp certainly looks more premium than the more affordable Instant Pot Duo Crisp.

In terms of performance, like all Instant Pots, it’s easy to create delicious meals in this appliance and the large capacity means it’s ideal for larger households.

The lack of a recipe book and cooking charts means you’ll have to head to the app or online for recipe inspiration. But with an army of loyal fans, there’s no shortage of cooking suggestions online.

Pros:

  • Safe and easy-to-use steam release

  • Heatproof silicone handles on the pot

  • Can be used on the stovetop or in the oven

  • No need for a separate air fryer

Cons:

  • Takes up a lot of storage space

  • Expensive

  • No recipe book or cooking charts included

Instant Pot Pro Crisp vs Duo Crisp: 5 Differences Compared

The Instant Pot Duo Crisp + Air Fryer was launched in November 2019, and an updated version, the Pro Crisp, was launched in November 2020. Which one should I choose?

To help you decide, here’s a quick comparison of the key differences between the two versions of the Pro Crisp and the Duo Crisp:

  • Pro Crisp has a higher maximum temperature:

  • Pro Crisp has a maximum temperature of 450F. Duo Crisp has a maximum temperature of 400F. The extra heat will make food crispier and browner, especially if you use the broiler function.

  • Pro Crisp comes in stylish black stainless steel:

  • The Duo Crisp is primarily made of traditional stainless steel with black plastic accents. The Pro Crisp features a new exterior design in a sleeker black stainless steel.

  • The Pro Crisp is available in only one size: 8 quart; the Duo Crisp is available in two sizes: 6 quart and 8 quart.

  • Another nice feature of the Pro Crisp is the gentle steam release, and the newer lid on this model controls the steam release when you're done cooking. When using the Duo Crisp, the release button makes it more difficult to control the release of pressure.

  • Pro Crisp is significantly more expensive:

  • The Duo Crisp 8-quart is now $169.95, down from $199.99, while the Pro Crisp 8-quart is now $249.95. The Pro Crisp isn't updated enough to overtake the Duo Crisp, which has many of the same features but is significantly cheaper.

Taking into account the new lid and higher temperatures, the Pro Crisp will cost more than the Duo Crisp, so whether this model update is worth the $80 price difference for you to consider.
