Foreo Luna vs. PMD vs. Clarisonic Mia 2 vs. Olay Regenerist: Which Makes the Best Facial Brush?

A facial cleansing brush may not necessarily fall into the category of a skincare “necessity,” but for those looking to up their face washing game, it can be an invaluable asset. Taking the extra time and effort to cleanse with a facial brush will help remove impurities, dead skin cells, and daily dirt and makeup. With regular use, you’ll notice a difference in the overall appearance of your skin. The most popular facial cleansing brushes like Clarisonic Mia 2, Foreo Luna, and PMD are all sonic facial cleansing brushes. They can clean the skin texture and other details with less residue by reliance on sonic cleaning. And there are some face wash brushes on the market that are rotating, such as Olay Regenerist Face Cleansing Device. Here we have rated each facial brush's ease of use, including the comfort of hold, pros & cons, battery life, and so on. Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Durable

  • Aesthetic: Pretty colors and sleek design

  • Compact – easy to pack for trips

  • Convenient – this device rarely needs to be charged

  • Large brush head

  • No replacement brush heads needed, unlike the Clarisonic nylon brush heads that collect bacteria and need to be replaced

  • Lightweight

  • Gentle

  • Also is a facial massager

  • Purple one did not irritate my skin

  • Intensity of this device can be changed on the app

  • Purple – Sensitive skin | Blue – Combination | Pink – Normal; Click here to find more details.

Cons

  • Expensive

  • Massager is kind of a joke

  • App: Customers are not happy with the app that needs to be used in conjunction with this device. After you save your settings you don’t have to use the app anymore.

  • Hard to grip device properly in the shower, especially with slippery skincare cleanser. Not a comfortable grip when I use the massaging side.

Note: Buy the proper color for your specific skin type. I think I should have picked the blue for combination skin. The sensitive (purple) skin one I bought is way too gentle for me. I’m not sure if it’s effective enough.

How Often Should You Use FOREO LUNA?

The LUNA silicone facial cleansing massager is so gentle to your skin that the manufacturer, Swedish brand FOREO, says it can be used even up to twice a day, and to decide based on your skin personal needs. But actual usage will depend on your skin needs. Test and see what works best for you. Some rule of thumb:

  • If your skin is sensitive it is better not push too hard with cleansing. Max once a day or just several times a week should be enough for you.

  • If you have oily skin you might want to use it twice a day because you will need to cleanse the dirt and oil accumulated during the day and night. After some time your skin should be moisturized enough and less cleansing would be needed.

  • If you have normal skin – once a day is more than enough, and most normal skin types use it up to 3 times a week.

  • If you have dry skin – similar to sensitive skin, a couple of times a week or up to once a day. And always moisturize right after.

  • If you wear a lot of make up, definitely cleanse deeply with a LUNA every time you take the make up off and in the evening before bed

  • If you have acne – up to two times a day. But do check with your dermatologist because there can be different stages of acne and for some it might not be advisable to use cleansing brushes. I would say better first using FOREO ESPADA blue-light acne treatment device to eliminate acne and maintain a regular cleansing routine once a day.

As some of my close friends own a LUNA device as well, I have seen that each of us has a different routine and amount of time they use it daily or weekly. Some don’t even use it more than 1-2 times a week. And that is perfectly fine if they see they don’t have the need to and just need occasional “maintenance”.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Two different speeds with one minute pulsing T-timer for personal customization.

  • Prepares skin for better absorption of skin creams, serum and moisturizers.

  • Helps improves skin texture, tone & creates noticeably healthier looking skin.

  • Apply cleanser to wet brush head and gently move the brush in a circular motion on damp facial skin.

  • There’s a timer that beeps to indicate how long you should stay in one facial zone and when to switch — from your forehead to your cheeks, and so on.

  • They do offer a wide range of brush heads for specific concerns like acne, sensitive skin, and even men’s skin, that you can buy separate.

Cons

  • Consider that you’re supposed to change brush heads every 3 months or so, which cost you about another $25-27 each with some discounts for two-packs.

  • I would say that you’re mostly satisfied with a super-quick cleansing routine, this device probably isn’t the one for you.

  • On Sept. 30, L'Oréal is shutting down Clarisonic. So Clarisonic Mia 2 is discontinued.

How Often Should You Use Clarisonic Mia 2?

That being said, the twice-a-day rule stands for all skin types, ranging from oily and acne-prone to dry and sensitive. You can also surpass your two-a-day rule and use your Clarisonic brush three to four times a day, depending on the brush head.

The Mia 2 is very to use. It has two-speed levels and a programmed timer to let you know when to move from one zone of your face to the next.

This is how you use it:

  • Apply some cleanser to your face or directly to the Clarisonic brush

  • Wet the brush and your face

  • Place the brush to your forehead and turn it on

  • Gently massage your face with the brush in small circular motions

  • A timer will tell you when it’s time to move to the next zone

  • The normal routine is to start with your forehead for 20 seconds, then move to your nose and chin area for another 20 seconds, before ending with 10 seconds on each cheek. A little buzz will let you know when it’s time to move from one area to the next.

  • You’ll probably need to practice a little at the beginning to get the hang of it. It’s best not to press the brush too strongly against your skin so it has room to vibrate and deeply cleanse your pores. Just gently massage your face for 60 seconds and you’re done.
