What is AppleCare?

AppleCare is Apple’s term for its warranty programs. Most Apple device comes with a certain stretch of AppleCare warranty service and phone/chat support for free, typically one year for the warranty and 90 days of phone support. You can also pay to extend that protection for longer.

There are three variants of AppleCare available, with different areas of coverage. These are AppleCare Protection Plan, AppleCare Plus, and AppleCare Plus with Theft and Loss.

AppleCare Protection Plan

This now seems to only be available on the Apple TV, although in the past it covered various products. This is the baseline coverage which extends the length of time that parts are protected against failing. When you purchase the plan, which can be done up to a year after buying the Apple TV, it will ensure that the device receives support for up to two years after it was initially bought. This means that should the motherboard fail after 23 months, Apple will repair it or replace it as part of the coverage.

AppleCare Plus

AppleCare Plus covers accidental damage. So if you drop your iPhone or your iPad gets submerged in water and you need to get the device fixed or replaced, your policy will save you from a hefty bill. But be warned that you'll still face a small cost. AppleCare Plus doesn't cover the repairs entirely, as there's an excess, just like you'd get on an insurance policy.

For instance, the iPhone's AppleCare Plus coverage entitles you to two claims for accidental damage per year, and for each of these, there will be an excess fee of £25/$29 (for screen damage) or £79/$99 (for other sorts of damage). AppleCare Plus is available for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple Display, HomePod, and iPod.

AppleCare Plus with Theft and Loss

If you live in the USA then you also have the AppleCare Plus with Theft and Loss plan available for iPhone. This has all the features of the standard AppleCare Plus plan, but adds on two incidents of theft or loss each year, with an excess fee of $149 for each one. AppleCare Plus with Theft and Loss is available only on iPhones in the US.

Pricing for AirPods AppleCare+ varies, depending on which specific AirPods model you have.

  • AirPods: $29

  • AirPods Pro: $29

  • AirPods Max: $59

Is AppleCare+ Worth It for Airpods?

AirPods are pretty robust little things that are rarely going to need repairs. Theft or loss is more likely than damage since Apple won't cover that in AppleCare+. So on balance, it seems clearer that AppleCare+ is not especially worth it for Apple headphones. There is that issue over AirPods Max and the unknown repair prices, though.

Conclusion

In a word, whether or not you should purchase AppleCare+ depends on how you use your Apple device, and how much risk and expense you are willing to take. If you are prone to dropping or damaging your device, the argument moves towards adding AppleCare+. Similarly, additional loss and theft coverage will be dependent on how likely you believe you are to lose your device or have it stolen. Ultimately, some users are simply more careless with their devices, and for those people, AppleCare+ is worth it.
