The stiffness of this foam is fairly average, not too stiff, not too soft.The upper is designed for durability and breathability. It's made with a mesh material that allows for good airflow, keeping your feet cool during your runs. The shoe also features a wide toe box, providing ample space for your toes to splay naturally.It allows you to run at full speed with its featherlight 9.8 oz, much lighter than the 10.3 oz average trail shoe. The layout has been changed slightly to increase durability and grip.The upper is now a double jacquard upper and lost the welded overlays, making it lighter and softer. The Speedgoat 5 has the stretchy vamp that was on the Speedgoat EVO upper. This was designed to give a good hold of the foot on rough ground or while descending but allow the upper to expand slightly as your feet expand when they get warm. It is a stretchy piece of material that runs up the toe box and into the laces.There is a slightly different tongue shape, with a thinner gusset that gives the upper a bit more room through the midfoot.Each new version of the Speedgoat has had slightly more room in the toe box. It is more noticeable in the Speedgoat 5, as the toe box has a straighter big toe line and the upper is much softer and thinner. The heel tab is now in the swallow tail shape used in Hoka road shoes. This makes the heel cup springier to give a snugger fit and moves the tab away from the Achilles to reduce any rubber.

However, the heel also seems to fit a bit narrower, which helps grip the foot better.

Add in Vibram MegaGrip lugs and the Speedgoat 3 provides grip and traction in even the most rugged conditions. The slight change in the toebox paired with what the Speedgoat 2 already offered makes this a perfect shoe right out of the box. Where this shoe is really different from the Speedgoat 2 is in the upper. The upper has had some nice changes. It’s really just some cutouts here. The point is, it really grabs and makes a little better pull onto your foot with a little more midfoot stability. 

While it offers excellent comfort and durability, its midfoot and toe box can feel narrow, posing a potential issue for runners with wider feet.
