The Standard edition bumps the memory up to 16GB and gives you more options for built-in storage up to 512GB for $599. Cranking it all the way up to the Pro model nets you even more options, including up to 32GB of memory and 2TB fast SSD storage, as well as 10 extra watt-hours on the battery, up to 38mWh. The Pro model also offers you the option of upgrading to the faster Ryzen 7 5825U processor for improved gaming performance and a boost to 8 cores and 16 threads. Fully speccing out the Air Pro doesn’t come cheap, however, and will set you back $1,249 – or approximately two 512GB Steam Decks. 

What is especially surprising about this array of options is that, even fully kitted out, the Air Pro is nearly identical in size to the Air and Air Lite. In fact, the only difference is that the Pro is 3.6mm thicker to accommodate its more powerful CPU. 

Coming from the boxy form of the original Ayaneo or the “Switch on Steroids” that was the Ayaneo Next, the Air is altogether more refined. The design is all about being thin and light, gentle contours instead of hard angles, and a look that takes more than a little inspiration from the Switch Lite. It’s a gaming PC you can carry in your pocket, and that’s not something you can say about most of its competitors. Relative to its small size, it packs some impressive specs.

Valve's handheld is a terrific device for taking your Steam library on the go, but the firmware has some quirks that need to be addressed, especially if you want to go all-in on emulation and game mods. Switch Lite Reviews 

If you’re on a tight budget or looking for something for the little gamer in your life, the Nintendo Switch Lite is a great access point to portable gaming. It’s got all the games from the Nintendo Switch library. It also comes in a great range of colors (blue, pink, yellow, grey, plus a bunch of special editions) and has decent buttons for such a little thing, making it one of the best handheld gaming consoles on a budget.

The Switch Lite looks like a Nintendo Switch in handheld mode with both Joy-Cons attached, but in a slightly smaller and slimmer design measuring 3.6 by 8.2 by 0.6 inches (HWD) and weighing 9.8 ounces. That's nearly an ounce lighter than just the Switch tablet itself, and five ounces lighter than the Switch with two Joy-Cons attached. The system's matte plastic shell feels very solid in the hand despite its lower weight, since it's a single device with no seams between the screen and controls and no rails designed to let its different components come apart.

Please note that the Switch's Joy-Cons occasionally suffer from control drifting, where the analog sticks start to send directional inputs to the system when they aren't being touched. Since the controls on the Switch Lite are part of the system itself, you can't simply replace them if they start to experience drift.

If the GPD Win 4 looks familiar, it should. The design is strikingly similar to 2012’s PlayStation Vita. Everything from the shape to the look of the buttons feels like a callback, though Vita owners will notice that it’s a bit bigger in every dimension. GPD has also gone with offset joysticks instead of the classic Sony side-by-side. But, of course, the Win 4 isn’t a PlayStation Vita. It’s a full-fledged gaming PC and has the performance chops to prove it. Inside its small yet chunky shell (8.7 x 3.6 x 1.1 inches), it features a AMD Ryzen 8840U / 8640U processor, 16 GB / 32GB / 64GB of DDR5 memory, and up to 4TB of NVMe storage. It’s a powerful, proven combination for running modern games at medium to high settings.

It also comes with a full, bloat-free Windows 11 installation (excluding the configuration app). The keys are completely flat, and I’m not convinced it’s actually better than the touch keyboard that comes baked into Windows 11, but it’s a nice alternative if you’d rather have tactile physical keys for typing.

Steam Deck

At 11.73 x 4.60 x 1.93 inches, the Steam Deck is one of the largest handhelds ever released. So, you aren't losing too many features aside from docked mode – which means no TV play. Due to the Switch Lite only being a handheld device, the console doesn't come with a dock, HDMI cable or kickstand.

Using a switch on the left side of the console, you can swap between Mouse Mode and Controller Mode. In Mouse Mode, the right joystick controls the cursor and the face buttons act like arrows while the D-pad turns into a navigation cluster for quickly paging up and down. The bumpers become left and right click. Surprisingly, there’s even a tiny clickable trackpad just below the right joystick that works great for quickly positioning your cursor (less so for fine movements and clicking icons). Touch control is another option and is usually the more natural choice unless you need that extra precision.
