  • Delsey Luggage Review

History and Origin

Delsey is a French luggage brand that was founded in 1946 by Émile Delahaye and the Seynhaeve brothers. “Delsey” was coined from the names of the original initiators of the business – Émile Delahaye and the Seynhaeve brothers.The company started out producing camera cases before moving into luggage production in the 1970s. DELSEY PARIS was the first brand to offer luggage with an ultra-strong rigid shell, providing better protection for travelers' personal belongings. Delsey also prides itself as one of the first manufacturers of wheeled suitcases. The company is equally reputed for producing lightweight suitcases and the sturdiest suitcase with zippered system. They invented the trolley system that utilizes incorporated retractable wheels that resemble the types used by airplanes. Today, Delsey offers a variety of luggage styles, including hard and soft-sided options, carry-ons, and larger suitcases for longer trips.

One of Delsey’s notable achievements is the creation of their patented Zip SecuriTech, which provides a high level of security and prevents theft. They are also known for their unique Brake System, which locks the wheels of your luggage in place to prevent it from rolling away. The products of the brand can be found in more than 110 countries globally. From anti-theft locks to durable designs that don’t compromise on aesthetics, this brand has over 70 awards and patents. Their luggages are distributed in more than 110 countries, so no matter where you hail from, you can get your hands on one of these stylish suitcases.

Price

Delsey luggage price range from $99.99 up to $436.99. While not all their suitcases are super cheap, Delsey Paris does have affordable options in its collections. And with the higher price tag on certain models also comes quality materials and their unique, innovative features.

Design

Delsey sets out to provide the adventurer with quality, scratch-resistant, and weatherproof luggage that comes in hard and soft materials. With a French heritage, It gets much of its design cues from France and is regarded by many to be a stylish option with reputable French quality. Aside from its emblematic look, its luggage has a sort of vintage aesthetic to it that makes it a delight to look at (the leather accents, such as).

Delsey luggage often features multiple compartments and pockets as well as padded laptop compartments for organization and ensure the safety of your electronics. Many of their suitcases also come with a detachable laundry bag or shoe pocket for convenience. Delsey luggage features a TSA-approved lock on every bag. Some luggages have a particularly sneaky feature that includes a coded lock with a hidden open button should you forget your combination. Delsey also has a patented anti-theft zip, which is three times more difficult for would-be thieves to break into than a standard zip. The suitcases maneuver well on their four spinner wheels, even over carpet, cracks, and bumps. Most models are also lightweight, so lifting them into an overhead bin is no problem.

Size

Delsey carries both hardside and softside suitcases, including surprisingly spacious carry-ons and checked baggage in multiple sizes to suit your needs. The dimensions of Carry-on luggage is 22 inch (22"h x 14"w x 10"d), the dimensions of Medium Checked luggage is 26.50 inch (26"h x 17"w x 11"d), while the size of Large Checked luggage is 30 inch (30"h x 19"w x 12"d).

Material & Durability

Despite its competitive pricing, Delsey luggage is still built to last that can withstand the rough handling that it can sometimes undergo during travel. Delsey makes many of their hard side luggage with polycarbonate, which is stronger and more resilient than ABS or polypropylene. Do take note, however, that there are some lines in the Delsey luggage catalog, like the Delsey Lagos collection, that are made with ABS.

Delsey often use polyester for their softshell suitcases to maintain an affordable price even though the material is not as durable. However, some of their fabric models are made from a combination of nylon and polyester or ballistic polyester that’s more long-lasting. But I do recommend travelers to opt for Delsey’s hard side luggages offerings in general. In all the other elements, such as zippers, wheels, and handles, Delsey also does a good job, which are bulkier and less likely to break. However,  their retractable handles sometimes get stuck and overall feel flimsy.

Warranty

Depending on the product, Delsey offers a Worldwide 2, 5 or 10 Year Limited Warranty, or a Limited Lifetime Warranty (“Warranty Period”, computed from the date of purchase). The warranty only covers against manufacturing defects in material and workmanship for:Wheels, Zippers, Extension and Carrying Handles.  The warranty does not cover batteries, especially lithium batteries that may be incorporated in the electronic components of the product.Other exclusions include:

  • Defects that come from normal wear and tear;

  • Defects caused by accident, neglect, abuse, or misuse;

  • Defects such as abrasions, scratches, dents or stains that do not impair the functional performance of the product;

  • Defects caused by exposure to extreme natural conditions, liquids, or gases;

  • Defects caused by handling by third-parties (such as airlines, hotels, etc.);

  • A product that has been modified without DELSEY's permission;

  • Any DELSEY product whose serial number has been removed or defaced, or if the displayed serial number does not correspond to the nature, type, or origin of the product.

  • Away Luggage Review

History and Origin

Away Travel is a travel bag brand out of New York, USA. Launched in 2015 after founder Jen Rubio’s luggage broke in an airport in Switzerland. Her clothes and toiletries poured out of her suitcase and onto the airport floor. She ended up finding some straps and tape to get the suitcase functional enough to get to her next destination. After that, Rubio was on the hunt for a better suitcase. She reached out to her former colleague at Warby Parker, Stephanie Korey and the two came up with the idea for a durable hard-shell suitcase with wheels and a built-in battery pack capable of charging phones and tablets.

Now Away Travel sells a range of accessories, including backpacks, carry-On luggages, checked suitcases, packing cubes, and duffels.  Their luggages and travel bags are instantly recognizable thanks to their sleek, clean aesthetic, shell design, and palettes that include neutrals and metallics. As one of the best luggage brands with a lifetime guarantee, Away is also known for revolutionizing the suitcase game with its built-in portable chargers. It has managed to make a rather ho-hum item an object of intense Instagram lust through celebrity collaborations, limited edition designs, and plenty of personalization options.

Away is certainly not the cheapest luggage brand out there, but it's also far from the most expensive. High-quality luggage can run upward of $600, but Away keeps its costs down by selling directly to the consumer. Their carry on  luggages price are range from $275 - $645. Their checked luggages are priced from $345 - $725.

Design

Though Away was initially founded on its luggage’s ability to recharge your iPhones, the brand has expanded into a full range of suitcases—batteries not always included! Their luggages have a minimalist-modern aesthetic and a sophisticated yet practical appeal.  Away luggages are known for their 360-degree wheels, durable and lightweight constructions, and TSA-accepted locks. Plus, Away also recognised a huge and historic gap in the luggage market: colour.  You can choose from a range of classic and out-of-the-ordinary matte and metallic colors.

Designed with space efficiency in mind, Away’s hard sided luggage has a large interior space which makes packing significantly less of a hassle.Because Away’s suitcases are a clamshell style, all of its suitcases have two compartments. One features a mesh zipper divider and the other boasts a unique packing strap system. The Garment Bag also has interior padding that keeps all of your long clothing items protected and helps to minimize wrinkles.Some models even comes with a rechargeable, removable power bank, saving you the trouble of constantly searching for a power plug to sit next to at the airport.

Size

For both checked bags and carry ons, Away luggage comes in many different shapes, sizes, and colors. Away offers two sizes of carry-on bags: the Carry-On and the Bigger Carry-On. The bigger carry-on is precisely as it sounds: bigger than most while still fitting nearly all airplane carry-on size regulations. The Checked luggages are available in Medium and Large size with capacities of 68.8 liters (about 2.4 cubic feet) and 99.2 liters (3.5 cubic feet).

Material & Durability

Away offers hard sided luggage only, made out of 100% polycarbonate materials. It is more durable than aluminum but lighter than other metals. Polycarbonate is the best luggage material. The 360 spinner wheels are partially recessed, which helps protect them from too many blows in case you decide to check it.They didn't sustain any dents from the baseball bat tests, but there were a few scratches after be shoved off a table. In a word,  the Away luggage is still very sturdy.

Founded in 1975 by Charlie Clifford, TUMI is named after a Peruvian icon the founder loved during his Peace Corps days in South America. Bottom Line

Delsey vs. Away vs. Tumi vs. Calpak Luggage: Which to Choose?

Everyone has different priorities when it comes to purchasing luggage. For example,  an investment piece with a lifetime warranty vs a lower-cost piece that will allow you to change up your style in a few years. When it comes to choosing between Delsey, Away, Tumi and Calpak Luggage,  it ultimately comes down to personal preference and specific needs.

Delsey is famous for their vintage-inspired aesthetic, which is backed by ultra-durable and lightweight constructions.  A scratch-resistant twill finish and lightweight, durable polycarbonate shell makes this a durable and stylish option in the mid-price luggage range. Plus,  a company that initially sold camera cases also take luggage security seriously. So for a secure luggage brand, Delsey is also top recommendation.

Away has built a cult following over the past couple of years, with its focus on direct-to-consumer marketing, making shopping less of a hassle while simultaneously providing lower prices. It is certainly not the cheapest luggage brand out there, but it's also far from the most expensive. Considering the 100-day return window, lifetime warranty, and aesthetically pleasing, durable, and reasonable price, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to  a heavy traveler who needs a bag that can withstand some wear and tear.

Tumi makes one of the very best luggage on the market. It’s pricier, but less than some luxury options, and it’s truly built to last. It’s also so thoughtfully designed that you’ll appreciate the hell out of it during its many years of service. So if you want the crème de la crème of luggage and can accept the steep price, Tumi is where it's at.

Calpak is focused on producing luggage for the mid-tier price range without sacrificing build quality. Their luggage is super stylish and also quite reasonably priced. The brand is happy to both follow trends and set them, which is always refreshing when looking for a new luggage. Many people are particular appreciation for the Hue Mini Carry-on Luggage, their best overall underseat bag. If you're looking for something you can stash in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you too, Calpak might be your best bet.
