Introduction For Each Model

Dyson V11 Animal(@Dyson)

Price: $599.99

The Dyson V11 Animal is a cordless stick/handheld vacuum. It has a great overall performance on most surface types, from bare floors to high-pile carpets. If you use it as a handheld vacuum with its lowest power setting, the battery provides over an hour of continuous use, great if you're vacuuming your car or another far-off place. However, it feels heavy in your hand when you use it as a stick vacuum. It's made of plastic that doesn't feel extremely sturdy and its dirt compartment is on the small side. Fortunately, it incurs virtually no recurring costs and is fairly easy to maintain.

It was effectively perfect in our cleaning performance tests, scoring a 99% out of 100. However, it’s also more expensive. That said, if you have a larger home, bigger messes, family, pets, etc. then the extra performance and features could be worth the added cost.

  • Additional charger

You will notice in the lists above that the ONLY difference between the Outsize and Torque Drive models is that the Outsize includes an additional charger and the cleaner head is XL. The V11 Torque Drive comes with one additional cleaner head (small half sized unit) that is good for delicate fabrics (think curtains) and it has a different readout for battery life (it will tell you in percentages how much life you have left versus the Animal model has three bars to indicate battery life). Everything else is the same. On the other hand, the V11 Animal has less tools/attachments and also has a less sophisticated control panel.

What's The differences Among V11 Animal,Torque Drive And Outsize?

7.png

Control Panel

The control panel for the V11’s resides on the back of the handheld unit.  The Outsize and Torque Drive models have an LCD control panel.  This provides remaining battery life in real time (minutes and seconds), troubleshooting videos that walk you through fixes for potential problems, the ability to choose power modes, etc.

The Animal model does not have an LCD control panel.  It has an LED control panel and it is a bit more rudimentary.  You can set the power, view a more granular version of battery power (1/3 charged, 2/3 charged, or fully charged), and there are trouble lights that illuminate to highlight potential issues such as a clog or a dirty filter.

Power

The Outsize is Dyson’s most powerful cordless to date. The other V11’s in the series (Absolute, Torque Drive, Animal) were a significant step up in power from the V10’s but Dyson has managed to pack even more punch into the Outsize.

Cleaner Head

The Torque Drive and the Animal come with the High Torque cleaner head. The red slider on the cleaner head controls 2 gaps on the front of the cleaner head.  The gaps can be set closed, half closed, or open.  Different settings will help with debris pickup depending on the surface, the power setting, and the debris type.  You typically have to experiment a bit to find what works best.  This cleaner head can be used on both carpet and bare floors.

The Outsize High Torque XL cleaner head is much larger than the cleaner head on almost any other cordless vacuum we’ve seen.It is designed to cover more area per pass than previous Dyson cordless cleaner heads (V6,V7,V8,V10,V11).It is capable of cleaning larger areas with less passes.

Battery

The 7-cell rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack is the same for all V11 models and it has the following specifications:

  • 25.2 V

  • 21.6 A

  • 3600 mAh

  • 91 Wh

The battery pack has 4.5 hour recharge time - approximately.

However the Outsize batteries are designed to be swappable, meaning you can easily swap a discharged battery for a freshly charged one in seconds. The system for swapping is extremely easy to use.

Run Time

Battery life between the two vacuums is similar but not identical. It is the same battery but the vacuum configuration/tuning is slightly different.

The Outsize got a slightly longer run time in ECO mode (on a single battery) than the Torque Drive, but a little less run time in AUTO and BOOST modes. The differences weren’t too significant however and overall run times between the two machines on a singler battery is similar.

V11 run times in general are very good, and with two batteries (as is the case with the Outsize) you are getting almost 1.5 hours of vacuuming in AUTO power mode.

Weight

The Outsize is the heaviest Dyson cordless vacuum to date and it weighs about 17.5% more than the Torque Drive. The Outsize handheld component is also larger and heavier. You may notice that it has 18 cyclones as opposed to the 14 cyclones we see on the Torque Drive.  And the dust bin is very large.

Dust Bin

There is a significant difference among the dust bins of the three vacuums. The Torque Drive and Animal dust bin has a capacity of 0.20 gallons while the Outsize dust bin has a capacity of 0.50 gallons – a full 2.5 times as large. The Outsize dust bin allows you to vacuum for extended periods of time without having to empty the vacuum. This again is part of the “large area cleaning” capability that Dyson has targeted with the Outsize.  It does however result in the top end of the vacuum being a bit buiky and it increases the size of the handheld component.

Performance

In terms of performance, all three of these models are really top-of-the-line and are designed with extremely high-quality parts and suction power. They all have intelligent suction for varying floor types and have brushrolls designed to tackle a variety of debris types with unwavering performance.

To really gauge performance,we will put these vacuums through a series of tests on various floor types.

Which V11 Is Right For You?

If you have a very large area to clean with mostly carpet or even half carpet and half bare floors, the Outsize is the best machine. Its size and run time will help make this a more manageable chore. And the cleaning head that is 25% wider than the head on the Torque Drive or Animal stick vacuums.

Mini soft dusting brushIf you have mostly carpet then you should consider either the Torque Drive or the Animal.  They have the same cleaning performance so it is really down to the tools and control panel. The Animal does not include the mini soft dusting brush (image to right) and it has the LED control panel instead of the LCD control panel.  Also, consider that the Animal is about $100 less expensive than the Torque Drive.

If you want the best value, the Animal is the best machine. This vacuum offers the best value because it comes in at the lowest price and still has excellent performance.
