Aspinal of London was founded in 2001 by current Chairman Iain Burton. The Creative Director of Aspinal is Mariya Dykalo, who graduated from the Lviv Academy of Art and Design. Giles Deacon the Haute Couture designer was appointed as Design Director in August 2018. Aspinal began by designing and manufacturing handmade small leather goods and hand bound leather books using small workshops and artisans in England and Italy. After five years as a pure play online retailer, Aspinal opened its first retail store in Selfridges, London, and by 2016 Aspinal has opened ten stand-alone stores in London and stores in Selfridges and Harrods, opening its first international store in Kuwait in January 2013.
