PS5 vs. PS5 Slim vs. PS5 Pro: Specs/Size/Performance/Reivews Comparison 2024

Since the release of the PS5 Slim, many are trying to decide whether to go with the standard console, buy the reduced-size version, or wait for the rumoured PS5 Pro. The Slim brought about a much needed change aesthetically, cutting the form factor of the PS5 down to a far more manageable size. However, everything inside remains the same. The "Pro" type versions that offer more power and improve performance and visuals. So which one is best for you? Therefore in this PS5 vs. PS5 Slim vs. PS5 Pro comparison, we want to look at these three devices from top to bottom. This includes their specs, price & avaliablity, designs, sizes, performance, pros & cons, and more!

PS5 Reviews

The PS5 is a powerful console offering a sublime current-gen gaming experience. Its library of exclusive games makes fantastic use of the DualSense controller, 3D Audio, and the console's lightning-fast SSD. The PS5 is now more than two years old, and is going from strength and strength, with a bigger roster of exclusive games and a range of impressive accessories. Not only does the PS5 offer 4K gaming, but it also has seriously advanced haptics, a speedy SSD and immersive 3D audio. All of these and more combine to deliver a console that's truly equipped for next-generation, or now current-generation, gaming. There is a slight caveat in that the console is so big with a divisive design that it may not appeal to everyone.

Overall, The PS5 is a terrific video game console due to its raw power and vast library of first- and third-party games. It’s also one of the biggest and bulkiest systems ever released — as anyone who owns one can attest. Thankfully, the PS5 Slim is here to replace its humongous predecessor. Read on to find more details.

PS5 Slim Reviews

The PS5 Slim is thinner, lighter and more modular than its heftier predecessor. Though outwardly different, it retains the same fast performance and zippy load times we’ve come to expect. This is an overall great system for playing PS5 and PS4 games. Sony’s refreshed PS5 (PS5 Slim) is about 30% smaller and up to 24% lighter than the 2020 model (PS5). And it’s significantly sleeker than the 2020 PS5.

The PS5 Slim is smaller and lighter. It’s still a big system but much easier to store. The redesigned console is also more modular, making it simpler to swap out its SSD drive and snap off its faceplates. You can even attach and detach the optical disc drive. Standing the system vertically isn’t as dangerous as before, though you’ll need to buy a separate $30 stand for better stability. The PS5 Slim also has more storage.

Besides the new design, the PS5 Slim features the same stellar performance, clean user interface and incredible game library as the original PS5. You don't need to upgrade if you own a PS5 since the new system is functionally the same. However, if you’ve been on the fence about Sony’s console, the slim model provides the best way to play the best PS5 games.

PS5 Pro Reviews

Sony is getting ready to release a more powerful PS5 console, possibly by the end of this year. The Slim brought about a much needed change aesthetically, cutting the form factor of the PS5 down to a far more manageable size. However, everything inside remains the same. If early reports are to be believed, the PS5 Pro will take its enhancements below the surface, offering performance boosts across the board. It is mainly reflected in the following aspects:

  • The PS5 Pro could boast 67 teraflops of compute power equating to a "mere" 33.5 Tflops of “Floating Point” performance in real-world gameplay terms. To put that into perspective, the PS5 has just 10.28 Tflops. So, in plain English, that would be a massive technical leap, and would allow the PS5 Pro to compete with even top-level gaming PCs. These rumored specs would be worthy of the Pro name.

  • The PS5 Pro will get a big boost to system memory performance, leaping from the 448GBs of memory on the base PS5 up to 576GBs.

  • The design of PS5 Pro’s CPU will be identical to the OG PS5, but the new PlayStation console will have a “High CPU Frequency Mode” that ramps up the CPU’s clock speeds to 3.5GHz. This would give the Pro’s processor a 10% clock boost over the standard PS5 — which is pretty significant.

  • Other specs include audio improvements (as much as a 35% uptick to the console’s Audio Compression Manager), 45% faster rendering speed and a huge boost to ray tracing performance. While this all sounds exciting, be sure to note, it’s still an unconfirmed rumor.

The PS5 Pro is pretty much guaranteed to play all the same games as the PS5, and the current DualSense controller will almost certainly be the primary way you interact with the console. There is perhaps a possibility that the PS5 Pro will come packing the high-end DualSense Edge controller

2. Price & Avaliablity

PS5

  • PS5 (with disc drive) - $449.99, now avaliable at Bestbuy.com (up to 5% super cash back).

Due to its relative age, the original PS5 is now quite hard to find but still occasionally appears in stock in the form of bundles with games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 or Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Retailers also occasionally offer their own incentives to buy remaining units, whether that’s a small discount, or some free physical games and accessories with your purchase.

PS5 Slim

  • PS5 Slim (no disc drive) - $449.99

  • PS5 Slim (with disc drive) - $499.99

The PS5 Slim Digital Edition is compatible with an optional disk drive accessory which adds all the functionality of the standard version for the cost of $79.99.

The PS5 Slim also does not come with any kind of vertical stand, something previously bundled with the console. A redesigned vertical stand that is also backwards compatible with the launch PS5 can be purchased separately for $29.99.

You can buy PS5 Slim on Bestbuy.com  (up to 5% super cash back), Playstation.com  (up to 4% super cash back).

PS5 Pro

The PS5 Pro, with its enhanced horsepower, could command a premium over the standard PS5 console. This could be somewhere in the range of USD 599 to 799.

3. Size

  • Original PS5 (disc version): 104mm (height) x 390mm (width) x 260mm (depth)

  • Original PS5 (digital version): 92mm x 390mm x 260mm

  • PS5 Slim (disc version): 96mm x 358mm x 216mm

  • PS5 Slim (digital version): 80mm x 358mm x 216mm

The PS5 Slim is thinner, lighter and more modular than its heftier predecessor. Overall, the PS5 Slim takes up 30% less space than the PS5. The PS5 Slim and PS5 Slim Digital Edition are 18% and 24% lighter than the launch model. The PS5 has yet to announce its size.

4. Designs

The PS5 and PS5 Slim follow a broadly similar design, with two smooth white plastic exterior panels sandwiching a central black column. Sony made other subtle design changes for the Slim, like panels on both sides divided by a black stripe. To make the newer PS5s look a bit more distinctive, their exteriors also alternate between smooth and matte white finishes. The curvature of the panels is also more noticeable, giving the console an even less boxy appearance.

One alteration that not all gamers appreciate is how the disc drive on the non-Digital PS5 Slim looks tacked onto the side of the console. On the older PS5, the drive appeared more like an integrated component. However, the PS5 Slim Digital Edition enables gamers to install a separately purchased detachable disc drive after purchasing. Annoyingly to owners of the original digital PS5s who may regret their purchase, this disc drive is only compatible with the PS5 Slim. Half the white panel easily snaps off, making the setup process much easier. Then, the drive slots seamlessly into the bottom of the console. Once attached, there is virtually no difference in appearance between the two PS5 Slim versions.

In terms of specific dimensions, the PS5 Slim has a width of 14.1in / 35.8cm, a height of 3.8in / 9.6cm, and a depth of 8.8in / 21.6cm when lying horizontally. In contrast, the PS5 has a width of 15.3in / 39cm, a height of 4.1in / 10.4cm, and a depth of 10.2in / 26cm while in the same position. The PS5 Slim also weighs 7.1lbs / 3.2kg while the PS5 comes in much heavier with a 9.9lbs / 4.5kg weight. Overall, the volume of the console has been reduced by over 30% and the weight has been decreased by 24%.

While we still think that the sheer heft of the launch PS5 means that it looks a little more impressive, the reduced size of the Slim is a welcome change. The original PS5 is simply far too big for a lot of setups - especially when you try to factor in sufficient airflow around it. The PS5 Slim offers the same functionality in a dramatically smaller package. Although it's by no means a portable console, the reduced weight also means that the PS5 Slim is far easier to transport if you need to.

It is worth bearing in mind that the PS5 Slim can only be used in a horizontal configuration out of the box. Although the launch PS5 came with a vertical stand, this is no longer included and has to be purchased separately. A small metal support is present, but only serves to keep the console lying flat on its side. This could actually make it more difficult to fit in a setup with limited floor or shelf surface space.

It’s hard to predict whether the PS5 Pro will look much different to the standard and Slim models. Some are speculating that they’ll remove the curves and make the console flat-sided while sticking to a similar colour scheme. Others are predicting it will look almost identical to the Slim but with black faceplates.

5. Features

The standard PS5 only comes with 825GB of storage, whereas the Slim comes with a full 1TB, which is a reasonable increase but won’t make much of a difference if you’re looking to install multiple AAA games (in which case, you’d be better off buying an external SSD so you don’t run out of space).

Beyond that, performance in every other area is identical. The PS5 Slim has the same processor, RAM, resolution and max refresh rate as the standard PS5, which means you won’t notice any difference when you’re firing RPGs at your mates in GTA V or backflipping off buildings in Spider-Man 2. But it's ture the PS5 Slim is thinner, lighter and more modular than its heftier predecessor.

Beyond the current versions, rumours suggest the PS5 Pro(possibly coming in 2024) could deliver true/pure 8K gaming (rather than just 4K, or upscaled-to-8K gaming), with a 240hz max refresh rate (up from 120hz), improved memory, nearly double the computing power, and a significantly boosted GPU, which would lead to improved graphical performance.

For people with the right additional equipment (ie. a top-of-the-range TV) to take advantage of these features, this could be a bit of a game-changer; particularly in the long term. The console may also come with more storage space.

6. Games & Performance

Not every title will benefit from the PS5 Pro’s increased power, but expect many of the best PS5 games to receive a patch that will increase a game’s resolution, frame rate or add ray tracing effects.

Sony has outlined a strict set of rules that developers must achieve if they want a game to be classed ‘PS5 Pro Enhanced’. The ideal scenario is that a game will utilize the PS5 Pro’s PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaling technology, maintain a 60fps frame rate and include ray tracing effects.

However, the PS5 Pro Enhanced label can be extended to existing PS5 games as long as the developer improves a title in one or four of the following ways:

1. Increased target resolution for titles that run a fixed resolution on the standard console

2. Increased target maximum resolution for titles that run at variable resolution on the standard console

3. Increased target frame rate for titles that target a fixed frame rate on the standard console

4. Inclusion of PS5 Pro ray tracing effects

It means that a PS5 game that runs at 30fps can still be classed as PS5 Pro Enhanced if it increases its previous maximum resolution or adds in ray tracing effects that weren’t possible on the original PlayStation 5 console.

The PS5 Pro will also include an “ultra-boost” mode that will improve the performance of PlayStation 5 games that aren’t enhanced. It sounds similar to the PS4 Pro’s boost mode, which helps certain games run at higher variable resolutions and more stable frame rates even if they don’t receive a dedicated patch.

Of course, every PS5 game that runs on the original PlayStation 5 or the Slim will work on PS5 Pro. The only real difference is that some will be specifically enhanced to take advantage of the Pro console’s extra power.

Verdict: Which One Is Best For You?

With the stock of original PS5 consoles dwindling, gamers may have no choice but to purchase the PS5 Slim. Even so, the used and refurbished supply of older consoles will stick around for a while, and prospective buyers may still wonder how the latest console compares to the original. As it turns out, differences between the PS5 Slim and the original PS5 are minimal, with a modest reduction in size and a slightly more interesting exterior.

Along with downsized dimensions, the PS5 Slim sports more curves and a divided multi-textured shell. However, even though it's slightly less wide, its disc drive bulges from its side, making it less streamlined. This makeover does result in more modular construction, and owners of the PS5 Slim Digital can purchase an easily installable disc drive as an add-on.

There are few (if any) reasons for owners of an early-generation PS5 to upgrade to the Slim unless space is at an extreme premium. Gaining a USB-C port and a small amount of storage isn't enticing enough for most buyers to switch, especially when a vertical stand costs extra. Even worse, the PS5 Slim Digital is priced higher than the older disc-less console.

Overall, if you’re ready to buy a PS5 right now, and you’re not bothered about the performance upgrades coming soon with the PS5 Pro; the Standard PS5 Disc Edition is probably your best bet at the cut price of $449.99. If you aren’t in a rush, and you want to make sure you get the best version of the PS5, the only option will be to wait until the Pro comes out. If you’re just looking to grab a bargain, you may need to wait until the PS5 Pro comes out before the standard and Slim versions of the PS5 get a more significant price reduction.
