  • What is VAT?

While over 160 countries use a value-added tax, it is most common in the European Union. It can be labelled VAT, TVA, IVA, moms, MwST, and a few others depending on each country.

  • VAT Rates:

VAT is commonly expressed as a percentage of the total cost. For example, if a product costs $100 and there is a 15% VAT, the consumer pays $115 to the merchant.

Conclusion:  As you can see from the table above and the chart, the cheapest and best countries and regions to buy Longines watches are in Europe (Sweden, Italy, France, or other EU countries)  due to VAT refund and tax free.

  • If you’re shopping in other EU countries that do not use Euros (such as Denmark, Sweden & Poland) it’s important to check the exchange rate on the day that you are shopping to make sure you’re getting a good deal.

How Does the VAT Tax Refund Work in the EU?

1. How much is the VAT in Europe?

When you travel to Europe and purchase goods and services, the price you pay generally includes this tax on the added value that is provided at each step of the supply chain, from production to sale.

In the European Union, the VAT rate generally ranges from 5 to 25%, depending on the country. Some of them apply different rates of VAT according to the type of product or service, generally categorized as “standard”, “reduced”, and “super-reduced”.

If you're travelling to France, for example, some products include a 20% VAT while it amounts to 5.5 or 10% on others. It can go as low as 2.1% for super reduced VAT.

2. When can you get a VAT refund?

In European countries, most downtown department stores, large shopping centers, brand stores, factory stores, specialty stores, etc. can get tax refunds, and you must look for the "VAT Refund" and "Tax Refund" signs. Within 3 months before leaving the country and returning to China, tax rebates can be obtained for clothing, cosmetics, luggage, electronic products, handicrafts and other items that can be carried out of the country purchased in these places.

3. Can I get a VAT refund on online purchases?

Yes, you can get a VAT refund even for your online purchases. The same rules apply: you must be a permanent resident in a non-EU country and the amount you paid must be above the minimum prescribed by the country of the online store.

4. Can I get a VAT refund on hotels?

If you're not a business traveller, no. VAT refund schemes don't apply to hotel stays because those are regarded as services consumed on-site rather than exported goods.

Companies that often resort to business travel may submit a VAT refund claim, but this is the only exception.

5. Is It Worth Claiming a VAT Refund?

It depends. If you're a problem-solver and frequent traveller, it's probably worth it. But there is no denying that since a lot of paperwork is involved, it's a tedious process.

How To Acquire Tax-refund?

1) Purchase Your Items

Go to the merchant and purchase your Longines watches.

2) Get Your Passport Ready

In order to get your tax-refund, you will need to prove that you are a tourist from another country.

3) Receive Proper Documents from Retailer

The merchant will need to create a special tax-free form for your Longines watches purchase. Most of the time, sales assistants will automatically fill in the paperwork for your refund, but make sure to double-check so you don’t miss out.

4) Get Documents Stamped

Your document will need to be stamped at customs before you can apply and return home.

5) Get Your Refund

It's very important you remember to drop your tax refund paperwork off at the airport. You need to find the tax refund desk, scan the document, and pop it into a mailbox.

You can receive this VAT sales tax back immediately in cash or receive the refund via your credit card.

Note:

  • Don’t think you can complete your tax refund in a few minutes. If you’re flying internationally, it’s best to arrive at the airport three hours in advance. There are usually a lot of people applying for tax refunds, so reserve enough time and don’t delay your flight.

Is Longines considered a luxury watch?

Yes, but they are a lower market luxury watchmaker compared to many other high-end luxury watchmakers such as Patek Philippe, Rolex, Audemars Piguet, Breguet, and many others. Many would classify them as a more affordable and attainable luxury.

Do Longines keep their value?

When buying a timepiece like this you are really getting every dollar's worth, especially with all the features that come with a Longines watch. Just like other luxury items, timepieces hold incredible value and of course, the better the model or the more features included, the higher the value.

Are Longines watches worth buying?

Longines make great watches for daily wear as they are made using some of the best materials on the market. These timepieces will retain their brand new look for many years to come if they are cared for properly.

You could make an argument that their quartz watches are overpriced. But Longines does an excellent job of ensuring its quartz watches are incredibly accurate, and they do use high-end materials. One other thing to remember: ETA is a Swatch Group subsidiary, so Longines has access to ETA movements.

Is Longines made in China?

Longines watches are partially made in China. The dials are Swiss-made, the cases are crafted in Portugal and Thailand, while the bracelets are the components that are made in China.

Is Longines owned by Omega?

In 1983, Longines' owner ASUAG merged with SSIH (which owned Omega SA) to form the Société Suisse de Microélectronique et d'Horlogerie (SMH). SMH became The Swatch Group in 1988, and Longines continued without R&D and production activities of its own.

Which Longines watch is best investment?

Much like when a record company remasters and releases an old classic, the Longines Heritage 1945 has been plucked from the brand’s archives, given a subtle update, and introduced back into the market. It has a retro look, with its copper-tone convex and aged leather strap. It’s no wonder why timepiece fanatics everywhere are looking to get their hands on one. So, if you’re lucky enough to find one, keeping it in your collection to sell when they’re inevitably discontinued could earn you a pretty penny.

The Longines Heritage Chronograph can also make a great investment, thanks to its classic but stylish look. The brand has made full use of its history and engineering expertise in designing this timepiece, and it certainly shows — this model is as timeless as it is well-made.

How often should you service a Longines automatic watch?

Longines recommends carrying out a service every 6 to 8 years in a Longines certified service centrer to clean and replace the oil and worn components.

Longines VS Rolex: which is better?

Rolex is the #3 most recognized Swiss brand worldwide. Longines is in position #24 of the same top 50.

Rolex Prices start at about $5,700 which is about 7 times more than the cheapest Longines watch. At the moment, the cheapest new Rolex watch would be the Rolex Oyster Perpetual 39mm men's watch followed by the Rolex Datejust 31mm ladies watches which cost about $500 more than the Oyster Perpetual 39mm. These like all Rolexes, use automatic calibers that are purely mechanical movements.

Longines Prices start at a lot less than the price of a Rolex. With more affordable watches such as the 43mm Conquest or the men's 41mm and 39mm Longines HydroConquest Quartz for about $200 more than the 43mm Conquest. These Longines watches use cost-effective battery-powered quartz movements unlike Rolex which has no Quartz watches. The more expensive Longines watches use mechanical calibers.

You should, however, compare apples with apples. Rolex doesn't make quartz watches, period. They pride themselves on only manufacturing mechanical watches which are considered more prestigious by watch lovers and collectors the world over.  Yes, there used to be quartz Rolexes in the past. The Rolex Oysterquartz was last featured in their catalog in 2001 but ever since that last run, they have scrapped the idea and instead focused on producing only high-end and high-precision mechanical calibers for their watches.
