The Miyoo Mini Plus is a Gameboy-inspired retro handheld, focusing on lower-end emulation gaming. Miyoo’s design is simple and to the point, , the Miyoo Mini Plus features six face buttons, split into your typical ABXY and Start/Select. On the back are four triggers all in a row. Each button and the D-Pad never feels mushy or loose. It’s incredibly comfortable to hold as well. That size also helps with portability. In one pocket, a phone with access to the whole world at the touch of a screen. In the other pocket, access to the past after a few clicks. It’s a delight.

The console packs a 3.5 IPS screen. At this size, the screen is incredible. Older titles look vibrant – once you turn off any irritating filters set by Retroarch – and it immediately transports you back to a simpler time.

With no massive screen real estate, games never look stretched or sit square in the middle of the screen surrounded by black bars. It’s a genuine joy to re-explore forgotten titles. Where the Miyoo Mini Plus still falters is with vertical shooters found in arcades. This is just a common issue, but sometimes the super small screen can make busy bullet hell shooters a tad more difficult to track.

ANBERNIC RG35XX Reviews 

The RG35XX is a handheld by ANBERNIC that wants to take a slice of the best mini retro handhelds pie. In terms of design, it’s a simple, sleek looking device that looks nostalgic and lightly nods at the old classic Gameboy DMG, for example the small slant at the bottom right of the device near the speaker grill. Half of the face is taken up by the large 3.5” glass screen which has small bezels to keep it looking fresh and modern. The screen used is lovely, it’s very bright and due to the 4:3 resolution most retro games look superb, especially Gameboy Advance games. 

Below that you have your DPAD which is soft, firm and easy to press. To the right you have high gloss action buttons, but if you’re someone who likes to eat snacks and play, this is going to be hell on earth. Most people wish they stuck with non-glossy buttons like their other devices.

Also worth noting is that the RG35XX does have a HDMI port for output to a TV or monitor, something the Miyoo Mini Plus+ is sadly lacking. The Miyoo Mini Plus+ has a 2600mAh battery which depending on the system you are emulating will get you up to six or so hours of gameplay.

Analogue has made a name for itself by releasing a stream of high-end hardware designed to play old games. It started with the NES and has since expanded to include the SNES, Sega Genesis, and soon the TurboGrafx-16.Unlike most retro machines, Analogue Pocket utilizes field-programmable gate array (FPGA) technology, which basically means they function just like the original hardware.

There are four main face buttons instead of two, along with a pair of shoulder buttons on the back of the device, on either side of the cartridge slot. There’s also a home button that sits between the tiny start and select buttons, a USB-C port alongside a headphone jack and the old-style link cable port on the bottom of the device, and a microSD slot on the side for firmware updates and such. Analogue promises 6 to 10 hours of battery life. The 4300mAh battery is comparable in capacity to the iPhone 13 Pro Max, and there's an optional 18W "Fast Charging Power Supply" Analogue claims will charge up your battery 50% faster than other chargers. The screen is the feature most deserving of glowing praise. The 3.5", 615ppi 1600x1440 display is absolutely overkill when compared to the 160x144 resolution screen of the original Game Boy and Game Boy Color. It's closer to the display on an iPhone than it is to a dedicated handheld like the Switch OLED, with its 293 ppi and 720p undocked resolution.

However, if you want the best gaming experience with high fidelity graphics and better performance you might want to check out the Analogue Pocket. The more money you pay, the better gaming experience you get.

The display is one of the most important specs in a handheld gaming console. The Analogue Pocket is a clear winner in this case as it uses a 3.5" LCD screen with a 1600×1440 resolution. However, the MIYOO Mini Plus & the ANBERNIC RG35XX feature a 3.5 inch IPS screen with a 640*480 resolution.

In terms of ergonomics, all three devices have their fair share of advantages, but we find the MIYOO Mini Plus to be the most handheld-friendly and convenient to carry while traveling. It is, in fact, the lightest of the three. You'll immediately feel the difference just by lifting up the three devices one after the other.

6. Features: Analogue Pocket Has the Most Features

At the heart of the Analogue Pocket is a technology Analogue has used in all its products. Unlike the generic retro Android-based gaming handhelds that "emulate" console hardware with software, the Analogue Pocket has something called an FPGA. FPGA stands for field-programmable gate array, and the field programmable part means that it can be trained, on the fly, to mimic many kinds of classic gaming hardware as soon as you fire up a cartridge.

The Pocket breathes new life into old games by showing them at their very best. You also have plenty of ways to customize the visuals. In the main menu there are various options, including platform-specific customizations on a system level. So if, for instance, you want to render all of your Game Boy Color games with the original grid of pixels visible, you can do that. Or you can stick to the default option where everything looks nice and clean. Likewise, for original Game Boy games, you can stick with the classic green hue or view things in a more modern-looking grayscale. You can also adjust the sharpness and desaturation or tweak the size and position of the image displayed. 

The Pocket with the sleep option, where you can put the Pocket in a battery-saving mode without losing progress. It’s great for playing old-school RPGs that have a little too much time in between save locations. The handheld also supports pretty much everything the original hardware did, which Analogue says is nearly 2,800 cartridges. 

Lastly, like the ANBERNIC RG35XX, The Pocket comes with a 1080p HDMI output. It does what you'd expect: lets you play your handheld games on the big screen – or better yet, capture or stream gameplay from original carts. That's pretty awesome, although you miss out on the rumble features or the ability to tilt and/or tumble. But it also has Bluetooth and 2.4GHz support built-in, so if you have a supported wireless controller you can pair it without any extra hardware. 

7. Design: Analogue Pocket is noticeably different

A fairly barebones system, the Miyoo Mini Plus features six face buttons, split into your typical ABXY and Start/Select. On the back are four triggers all in a row. This might seem uncomfortable, but it never becomes a problem. A vast majority of the games you’ll be playing on the Miyoo will rarely ever touch the middle triggers, but having them on hand has proven exceptionally useful for accessing Retroarch’s settings.

Each button and the D-Pad never feels mushy or loose. It’s also super comfortable in the hands. The screen used is very bright, the perfect 4:3 aspect ratio for playing old games and features small bezels, giving it a modern sleek look.

The action buttons feature a high gloss material with coloring inspiration from the SNES. On the top you’ll find your on/off button alongside LED’s that indicate charging. Your volume buttons are on the left hand side, nothing on the right hand side, and at the bottom you have your 3.5mm headphone jack, a SD card slot and a USB-C port. On the back you will see that the battery pack adds a thick bottom to the device, this helps with comfortability, and allows Miyoo to insert new shoulder buttons to the top, that curve into the thin section behind the display.

About ANBERNIC RG35XX

In terms of design, it’s a simple, sleek looking device that looks nostalgic and lightly nods at the old classic Gameboy DMG, for example the small slant at the bottom right of the device near the speaker grill.

Around the sides you’ll find your other less important buttons like on/off, volume, a mini HDMI out, USB-C charging, a headphone jack and a reset button.

About Analogue Pocket 

The Analogue Pocket has a D-pad and four face buttons (A/B/X/Y, all unmarked). At the bottom edge are the buttons for Start and Select, and right in between them is a button with the Analogue logo engraved in it. Press this middle button to jump into the settings menus while a game is running to change audio settings or tweak the screen profile.

You can also use this button to create ad hoc save points in games (Analogue + Up) or take hi-res screenshots (Analogue + Start), both of which are saved to an inserted microSD card, which lives on the console's right edge. 

Around the back are two itty-bitty, clicky left and right trigger buttons, necessary for Game Boy Advance games. These flank the Game Boy cartridge slot. Unlike on a real Game Boy, the cartridge is kind of hanging out in the open, exposed and too easily jostled. This could be an issue especially when putting Pocket into a bag when it's asleep—the system can lose your spot if the cartridge gets knocked around. 

The last noteworthy hardware components are on the bottom edge: a Game Boy Advance-style link cable port (multiplayer with actual Game Boys and other Pockets is totally possible), a USB-C port for charging and for use with the optional HDMI dock, a power LED, an IR sensor, and a 3.5-mm headphone jack.

Verdict: Which One Is Best For You?

The Anbernic RG35XX offers the same level of performance as the Miyoo Mini Plus, emulating thousands of retro games right on up to the PS1 era, with larger, more comfortable controls—including beefy shoulder buttons on the back—dual microSD card slots for keeping your game files and OS files separate, and even a Mini-HDMI port for playing games on a larger screen. 

• ANBERNIC RG35XX is the cheapest. If you are looking for a cost-effective retro game console, then ANBERNIC RG35XX is the best choice.

• If you want a better gaming experience and more features, Analogue Pocket is undoubtedly the best choice.
