Wendy's vs. McDonald's vs. Burger King: Differences and Reviews 2024

Wendy's vs. McDonald's vs. Burger King: Differences and Reviews 2024

Fast-food fans see the battle between the burger chains play out on their menus. Which do you think is better: 'McDonald's' or 'Burger King?' Or maybe you'd guess that 'Starbucks' is better, or else 'KFC,' 'Chipotle,' or even 'Wendy's?' We'll analyze and test three of the most popular fast food restaurants for you, and yes, McDonald's, Wendy's and Burger King have all released limited-time value menus. So which one has the best price? Or in terms of taste, which burger is the best for me? How do these brands differ in terms of chicken nuggets, breakfast, chips, beef quality, health, nutrition facts, calories and freshness?

1. Ranking of the most popular fast food chains

#1.                  McDonald’s

The first place in the ranking is occupied by the world’s great hamburger giant.

McDonald's is the world's largest fast-food restaurant chain. It has 36,000 franchises in nearly 120 countries, employs 1.9 million people, and serves more than 70 million meals every day.

A pioneer in the fast food industry, the company has maintained consistent, moderate growth through affordable prices, speedy service, and constantly expanding and refreshing its menu offerings. Thanks to extensive marketing, McDonald’s is also one of the most recognizable brands in the world.

It has a lengthy history. The first McDonald's restaurant was opened in San Bernardino, California, in 1948 by two brothers, Maurice and Richard McDonald. They sold their first hamburgers for 15 cents each. This concept of fast food, which eliminated the need for wait staff, worked out so well that it developed into a franchise system.

In 1955, salesman Ray Kroc entered into a partnership with the McDonald brothers and helped build the corporation. Kroc bought the company from Maurice and Richard McDonald in 1961. The next year, the chain's popularity increased when the company introduced the famous golden arches as its logo.

In 1963, the company introduced corporate mascot Ronald McDonald, and McDonald's as we know it was born.

Since then, McDonald's has grown and become the most valuable of all fast food chains in the United States.

However, it faces significant competition from other quick-service brands, such as Burger King, Wendy’s, Taco Bell, KFC, and Subway.

#2.                  Burger King

Burger King is the second in the ranking.

Burger King is probably the most direct competitor for McDonald's, with its staple Whopper challenging the Big Mac in the burger war.

Burger King had more than 18,000 locations in more than 100 countries, with roughly 11 million daily visitors worldwide.

Independent franchisees own nearly all of those restaurants. Once a publicly-traded company, Burger King became private after it was purchased by 3G Capital in 2010 for $4 billion. Now, Burger King is owned by parent company Restaurant Brands International, which also owns Tim Hortons and Popeyes.

One part of the revival strategy is directly challenging to McDonald's products. In November 2013, Burger King introduced the Big King sandwich, with two patties, a three-layer bun, and a special sauce, as a not-so-subtle competitor to the successful Big Mac from McDonald's.

When McDonald's brought back the McRib sandwich, Burger King unveiled a $1 BK BBQ Rib as a cheaper alternative. In 2018, Burger King announced a double quarter-pound burger in a direct shot at McDonald's' quarter-pound burger.

There is no confusion about Burger King's value proposition. It is just as good as McDonald's with the same products, just slightly more upscale and, sometimes, lower prices.

#3.                  Wendy’s

Wendy’s is the third fast food chain in the fast food ranking.

Like Burger King and McDonald's, Wendy's focuses on burgers, fries, and other classic American food.

Wendy's "old-fashioned" hamburgers were inspired by Dave Thomas's trips to Kewpee Hamburgers in his home town of Kalamazoo, Michigan. Kewpee sold square hamburgers and thick malt shakes. Thomas founded Wendy's in Columbus, Ohio, in 1969 and featured square patties with corners that stuck out from the sides of the circular bun, giving the impression of an abundance of good quality meat.

There are a total of 6,711 Wendy's outlets, including 353 that are company-owned and 6,358 that are franchised; 92% of all the locations are in North America.

While the company determines standards for each store's exterior appearance, food quality, and menu, the store owners have control over hours of operations, interior decor, pricing, staff uniforms, and wages.

2. McDonald’s vs. Burger King vs. Wendy’s - Which Fast Food Restaurant Do You Like Better?

3. McDonald’s vs. Burger King vs. Wendy’s - Which chain truly makes the best flagship burger?

Each restaurant boasts iconic products: the Dave's Single from Wendy's, the Big Mac from McDonald's, and the Whopper from Burger King. These are some of America's most popular and iconic burgers.

3.1. Which brand has the best quality meat?

It starts with the beef. For decades, Wendy's has advertised a "fresh, never frozen" approach to its hamburger patties. While this claim has been contested, it seems to hold up.

Wendy's says it uses only fresh, never-frozen North American beef and that it "supports a supply chain that costs more than a frozen one because fresh is a difference you can taste."

McDonald's and Burger King, by comparison, flash-freeze their burger patties before sending them to restaurants, where they are cooked.

3.2. Wendy's Dave's Single Review

What ingredients does it contain?

Wendy's prides itself on its fresh, never-frozen beef patties. After all, Wendy's signature burgers are made with square patties — a tongue-in-cheek testament that Wendy's, apparently, doesn't cut corners.

The Single consists of the signature Wendy's quarter-pound square patty sandwiched between two slices of American cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, pickles, red onions, ketchup and mayonnaise, all wrapped in a modified premium bread.

A Wendy's or McDonald's hamburger is very similar in ingredients. The most obvious difference is that Wendy's buns are bigger than McDonald's. Next, the sourness in McDonald’s burger is cucumber pickle, while Wendy’s one is red onion pickle.

Does it look attractive?

The most appealing elements of the burger were the roundness of the onions and the shininess of the bun, but the burger was just kind of flat overall.

The signature square patty peeks out the side and the tomato and cheese are visible.

How does it taste?

The bun was good quality, a bit too thick for the burger patty, and the excess of other stuff - pickles, shredded lettuce, cheese, onion, mayo, and ketchup - overwhelmed the beef.

But the burger is smushed, swampy, and slathered.

The square beef patty is thick and juicy, and the red onion slices add a lot more bite and zest than the white onions from the competition.

The pungent and flavorful cheese stood out, as did the crunchy rounds of onion.

The pickles and tomatoes didn't contribute much to the taste.

Overall, the flavor profile was gentle and inoffensive, with most of the flavor coming from the cheese and onions for a moist and pleasant bite.

3.3. Burger King's Whopper Review

What ingredients does it contain?

The Whopper had all of the same toppings as Dave's Single—cheese, lettuce, pickles, onion, mayo, and ketchup— but with a sesame seed bun.

Technically, the Whopper doesn't have cheese, but since every cashier asks "With cheese?" and every customer should say yes — because no one should say no to cheese — they love it in their classic burger a slice of American cheese.

For decades, Wendy's has touted its "fresh, never frozen" approach to its burger patties. While Burger King can't make that claim, it does have its own secret weapon.

Burger King's Whopper is broiled. That's why those glossy, colorful Burger King ads always feature a photogenic char on the patty. That char that adds smokiness, it's so central to the Whopper experience.

Notably, Wendy's opts for red onion, which packs more flavor and acidity than Burger King's milder white onion slices.

Plus, Burger King has fresh and healthy ingredients, a much stiffer bun, and a far more equalized hamburger than McDonald’s.

Does it look attractive?

The Whopper lived up to its name. Heavy, wide, and fairly colorful, it looked every bit the classic fast-food cheeseburger.

Wendy's serves its burgers on shiny toasted buns, while Burger King's Whoppers are served on untoasted sesame seed buns.

The Whopper is the biggest of the three, which means that the beef wasn't patted down thinner to fit the larger bun, since all had the same amount of beef.

How does it taste?

Like Dave's, the Whopper's beef gets a little overshadowed by the extras, especially because it's thinner.

In the Wendy's burger, the cheese melts nicely on the patty. In the Whopper, however, the unmelted squares of American cheese looked unsettling.

While Burger King's char is innovative, and Wendy's fresh, surprisingly juicy patty rises above the rest.

Unlike in the past, Burger King is no longer slapdash, soggy, and oversauced. These days, the wide, flat sandwich has a good ratio of burgers and condiments, and the bun envelopes it all without becoming waterlogged.

The pickles are surprisingly tart, adding a much more satisfying crunch than the onions.

Considering that "burger" is in their name, Burger King should be able to churn out a decent burger. While opinions vary, a consensus seems to be that they have a better burger than McDonald's. Burger King produces a "more balanced burger."

The toppings really stood out: spicy, crispy onions, a thick slab of tomato, crunchy and watery lettuce, and a hint of pickle.

Meat and cheese play a supporting role, with plenty of bread on the first bite. However, everything works nicely together.

Very mayo and meat-heavy.

3.4. Big Mac Review

What ingredients does it contain?

McDonald's describes their 550-calorie Big Mac as "a 100% beef burger with a taste like no other. The mouthwatering perfection starts with two 100% pure all beef patties and Big Mac® sauce sandwiched between a sesame seed bun. It’s topped off with pickles, crisp shredded lettuce, finely chopped onion, and a slice of American cheese.

Regarding the freshness, you will realize that McDonald’s Big can not match their competitors in this either. Wendy’s burgers always have a fresh taste, from meat and buns to vegetables.

Does it look attractive?

Big Mac buns are very smooth and round. It looks tall.

The Big Mac comes in a nice cardboard box that keeps it in-tact, and the Whopper or Dave's Single just comes wrapped like a plain ol' burger.

The triple bun approach is key to enjoying the burger and its myriad flavors. The middle bun piece — called the "club" — separates the two beef patties, avoiding the overwhelming sensation of "beef overload" so often experienced with double patty burgers.

Despite its great flavors, many people complain that the third bun in the middle is a deal-breaker. The bun doesn’t do much for the taste but only provides structure.

How does it taste?

When we tasted it, the bread was suspiciously sweet - I guess because of the high amount of sugar.

The patty was very thin. The meat was not juicy but had a kick back. It tasted a lot like char, but not as professional and attractive as a Whopper. It actually tasted more like chicken than beef, although there was definitely some faint beef flavor.

However the burger is balanced. Every bite has just the right amount of bread, beef, condiments and toppings.

Its biggest feature is its special sauce, which makes it firmly grasp the American stomach. The sauce was very strong, without the rich cheese like Wendy's.

The sandwich has a satisfying heft but is not overwhelming.

3.5. Which is healthiest, Burger King, McDonald's, or Wendy's?

Wendy's is the healthiest option. In addition to its famous non-frozen beef, its lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, onions and everything else is prepared every morning before the store opens to ensure no stale and rough produce.

The bacon is never frozen either, it's in the freezer and cooked fresh in the oven every morning.

The freshest hamburgers appear to be Wendy's, since they grill and assemble each burger by order.

A customer places an order, and the hamburgers are grilled and assembled according to the customer's specifications. It takes a little more time, but there's no need to store the patty to keep warm since it's hot and fresh off the grill.

Both restaurants, Burger King and McDonald's, stock cooked patties and use a blending process. They combine make-to-stock and make-to-order burgers.

Burger patties are cooked and then stored in a special container. When customers place their orders, burgers are assembled according to individual needs.

Burger King's burgers may also have an edge over McDonald's on the health factor. Burger King's double cheeseburger has more protein than McDonald's and has fewer calories and grams of fat.

The Big Mac did slightly beat out the Whopper in terms of fewer calories and fat, though,669-calorie Whopper, 550-calorie Big Mac.

Second, McDonald's doesn't have a plant-based burger yet, while Burger King offers fans the Impossible Whopper.

3.6. Which is the most affordable, Burger King, McDonald's or Wendy's?

Places like McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's and Chick-fil-A typically lure us in with cheap eats. While one uberpopular fast-food chain did manage to lower prices in 2022, most companies raised the cost of burgers, chicken, fries and soda.

Wendy's is now the new most expensive fast-food chain. With its big 2022 jump, Wendy's overtakes Burger King as the most expensive fast-food chain with the average meal costing $6.63.

Prices at Wendy's, shot up almost double that, with 35% inflation. Burger King increased menu prices by a mere 2%, while McDonald's actually managed to decrease menu prices by 5% in 2022 compared to the previous year.

Right off, it's evident that Burger King's Whopper has a distinct size advantage, but it also costs a little bit more.

Burger King's Whopper weighed in at a whopping 11.4 ounces. Meanwhile, McDonald's Big Mac weighed in at 7.2 ounces.

But it should be noted that the Big Mac costs a bit less, to be fair — $6.69 in Los Angeles. Burger King's Whopper costs you $7.39.

Burger King makes big bucks by not having cheese on any of their specialty burgers — instead, it is offered as an added upcharge.

However, the Whopper is a much better deal per ounce, even with the addition of the cheese.

A Big Mac has 3.2-ounces of meat, while the Whopper is a true quarter pounder at 4-ounces.

So, for those reasons, the Whopper wins on value.

So, who is the ultimate winner of this burger showdown?

4. McDonald's vs. Burger King vs. Wendy's - who makes the best french fries?

McDonald’s knows how to fry better potatoes than almost anyone.

One of the reasons McDonald’s fries are so tasty is that they use natural beef flavors, which produce flavor enhancer MSG as the potatoes touch the hot oil.

The potato pieces are just the right size so that the outside is crispy and the inside is soft and fluffy when fried.

Meanwhile, Wendy’s fries have a slightly saltier flavour because of sea salt. Although this method has brought out the typical flavour of French fries, it still can not beat McDonald’s in this dish.

Burger King has attempted and failed numerous times to produce a fry that would give them a competitive advantage over McDonald’s.

This isn't to say that Burger King's fries are terrible, as they're certainly better than some other sad sacks of potatoes in fast food.

5. McDonald's vs. Burger King vs. Wendy's - who makes the best chicken nuggets?

Like fast-food french fries, it’s hard to resist a good chicken nugget.

5.1. Wendy's Chicken Nuggets

At Wendy's, an order of four chicken nuggets costs $1.84.

The best chicken nuggets are from Wendy's.

Wendy's Chicken Nuggets are made just like real chicken breasts. It tastes like food. It ranks higher than those of Burger King and McDonald's, but the processed meat still has a strong taste.

These nuggets are hot, juicy and delicious. It was very crispy on the outside and softened after a while.

It's a bit spicy and very salty.

5.2. Burger King's Chicken Nuggets

Burger King was next on our list. Here you can purchase eight pieces for $1.99. That’s double the nuggets offered from McDonald’s for about the same price.

I appreciated that Burger King nuggets arrived hot and fresh from the fryer.

There’s nothing particularly exceptional about it on the surface—sure, the morsels are suitably crispy, and there’s significantly more chicken here than in skimpier nuggets elsewhere.

But this is higher in the ranking because the nugget imparts superior chicken flavors, plain and simple.

It’s one of the chicken-ier nuggets in fast food, and in a sea of nuggets, that stands out. As an added bonus, Burger King chicken sandwiches are always a delicious option.

5.3. McDonald’s Chicken McNuggets

The flavor felt the most processed out of the ones tested. Also, with a four-piece coming in at $2.19, a rival fast food joint offered more value.

It wasn't very crispy.

It may be the juiciest.

It's greasy. These always end up with a greasy film in my mouth.

6. McDonald's vs. Burger King vs. Wendy's - who makes the best  breakfast?

The old saying, "the early bird gets the worm" couldn't be more true when it comes to breakfast competition between the two fast food giants. The birth of McDonald's breakfast started in 1970 and Micky D's came out swinging big time in 1971 with the iconic Egg McMuffin. Burger King foolishly waited until 1983 before they finally debuted a national breakfast menu. And the Egg McMuffin is hardly the only unique breakfast item McDonald's has put up over the years. The launch of the syrup-infused pancake hybrid McGriddle was a massive success that, according to The Wall Street Journal, accounted for 40 percent of the brand's same-store sales growth upon its release.

While Burger King's Croissan'wich is a worthy opponent to the Egg McMuffin, that's where Burger King's breakfast prowess ends. The brand has tried rolling out items like the Maple Waffle Sandwich and French Toast Sandwich, and while tasty, they're more McGriddle knockoffs than real breakfast innovation.

We've already touched upon how Burger King's breakfast creativity falls a bit short compared to McDonald's. Factor in the sheer fast food magnetism of McDonald's offering all-day breakfast, though, and Burger King simply can't compete.

For the longest time, fast food breakfast came to a close around 10:30 or 11:00 a.m. It was a truth that late risers just had to accept if they had any hope of getting an Egg McMuffin. That all changed, however, in 2015 when McDonald's launched its all-day breakfast menu. The change-up resulted in a flood of foot traffic for Mickey D's and the company saw its stock and sales soar to new heights.

At least one lone Burger King franchise began offering all-day breakfast, reports Business Insider, and the chain did start eventually selling its burgers during breakfast hours. That defensive strategy though was a bit like trying to fight back an artillery assault of machine guns with slingshots. Although McDonald's dropped its all-day breakfast menu in the swells of the COVID-19 pandemic, for a number of years, breakfast fans knew that McDonald's would be waiting to serve them long after Burger King's 10:30 a.m. cutoff time.

7. McDonald's vs. Burger King vs. Wendy's - who has the best  drinks?

McDonald's also has better tasting Coke than Burger King

Neither McDonald's nor Burger King are foolish enough to carry Pepsi products, meaning that both fast food restaurants are loyal clients of the Coca-Cola empire. So how could one possibly have a better Coke to serve its customers than the other? Well, just like the French fries, McDonald's has a leg up on Burger King when it comes to soft drinks.

McDonald's doesn't have a special version of the Coke made specifically for them, however. They've just got a better system for delivering the soft drink to your mouth, right down to the straw itself. According to The New York Times, most fast food eateries receive their soda syrup delivered in bags. McDonald's has opted to stand out from the pack, however, and insists on receiving its product in steel tanks to ensure optimum soda freshness. Both the syrup and the filtered water it's mixed with are also pre-chilled to nearly freezing temperatures before hitting the soda fountain. This means your McDonald's Coke is perfectly cold from the start. Even the plastic straws Mickey D's uses — or at least used to use — are a bit wider. According to McDonald's, the reason for this is "so all that Coke taste can hit all your tastebuds."
