In the world of electric toothbrushes, Oral B is one of the biggest brands alongside Philips Sonicare. The Oral B-io Series 9 is one of the brand’s most high-tech models, with plenty of smart features and an incredible AI-powered app.

The Oral-B iO Series 9 is a pleasure to use, quietly gliding across each tooth to remove tough plaque, and offering genuinely useful real-time feedback to help ensure you do as thorough a job as possible. You'll get the most out of this brush if you use Oral-B's companion app to monitor how you're cleaning each surface, but the brush itself gives you plenty of guidance if you don't have time to check your phone. This all comes at a cost, and the iO Series 9 is one of the priciest electric toothbrushes around. It has dropped in price substantially since launch though, and can help you develop better habits and technique that should serve you well for years to come.

Charging this toothbrush is also incredibly easy: all you need to do is plug the charger in and place the toothbrush handle on the magnetic charger base. The battery level is indicated on the screen, so you don’t have to wait for longer than it takes to fully charge the battery .

The Oral B Genius X is an impressively high-tech toothbrush that can improve your technique, but sonic toothbrush lovers may not enjoy the higher volume.

The Oral-B app adds some excellent tools to help improve your brushing technique and ensure you don't miss a spot (it tracks the brush's position in your mouth in real time with surprising accuracy), but the Genius X also delivers a thorough clean if you prefer not to connect it to your phone. It's perhaps not the best brush if you have particularly sensitive gums, as the cleaning action is pretty vigorous and it takes a quite a lot of pressure to activate the warning sensor, but it's an otherwise great all-rounder. Its cleverly designed charging case is a highlight too, and gives regular travellers extra options for keeping their brush powered up.

The Oral B Genius X also includes a host of useful features, such as a pressure sensor, a two-minute timer, and a 3-second pulse reminder to switch position, plus a range of stylish colors to choose from, including rose gold and sleek black. It also offers users the ability to customize their toothbrushes further, with a fun color-changing ring at the top of the handset.

Key Features

  • 2 minute timer including quadpacer

  • 360 degree Smart Ring (LED light ring)

  • Charging travel case

  • Bluetooth connectivity

  • Small round brush head with Oral-B 3D movement cleaning system (Oscillating-Rotating-Pulsating)

  • 6 cleaning modes (Daily Clean, Pro Clean, Sensitive, Whitening, Gum Care, Tongue Clean)

  • Built-in rechargeable battery with 14 day battery life

  • Visible gum pressure sensor

>>Philips Sonicare 9900 Prestige Review

User reviews:4.6/5.0

The Philips Sonicare 9900 Prestige is an absolutely top-end electric toothbrush, and it shows. It's smart and sleek, and even comes with an executive-looking leather-effect travel case that keeps it charged when you're away from home. It's slim and light in the hand, designed to stay as clean as possible, and its compact all-purpose brush head avoids the need to switch between different designs for sensitive and intense brushing.

The downside of that minimalist design is the lack of controls on the handle, which means you'll have to delve into the Sonicare app to make adjustments to the settings. That's not a problem if you know exactly what type of brushing experience you like, and are happy to invest a little time getting it just so, but if you're in a hurry you can't pick a mode on the fly as you can with the Philips Sonicare DiamondClean 9000.

And here are 3 variants of the Sonicare 9900 Prestige. The difference is the color of the brush handle and travel case. From a feature, performance and technical point of view they are all the same.

Oral-B iO Series 9 vs. Genius X vs. Sonicare 9900:Which is Right for You?

Buy Oral-B iO Series 9 if...

  • You prefer  high-tech display

The Oral B-io Series 9 is a premium product. It looks sleek and high-tech with its color display and comes with a nifty charging case you can take on the go.

  • You need customized advice

iO Series 9is the incredible AI-powered app it comes with. This app gives you tons of information and allows you to track your brushing in real-time, ensuring you don’t miss a spot. Based on your past brushing, you get customized advice to improve your brushing technique.

  • You’re really curious about how you brush and want to improve your technique

This toothbrush is really helpful. It also helps with motivation to brush as it ‘gamifies’ the process and rewards you for regular and in-depth brushing.

Buy Oral-B Genius X if...

  • You're a frequent traveller

The brush's charging case is excellent, with room for two heads rather than just one, and a choice of charging options. It's not as sleek as the cases of some higher-end brushes, but is better designed in many ways.

  • You're on the fence about smart toothbrushes

The Oral-B Genius X doesn't rely on its app for any of its key features (such as its pressure sensor), so it's entirely up to you whether you use its Bluetooth function or not. If you're undecided, it gives you the best of both worlds.

  • The iO Series 9 is too expensive

The Genius X offers much of the same functionality as the iO Series 9, but in a slightly less fancy package and with a more modest price tag.

Buy Sonicare 9900 Prestige if...

  • You're a frequent traveller

The USB-C chargeable case means you can take the Sonicare 9900 Prestige on the road for weeks, and it's designed to stay as clean as possible on your journeys.

  • You want to perfect your brushing

The real-time feedback will help you develop better technique that'll serve you well long-term, even on days when you don't want to open the app.

  • Style matters

Let's be honest, style one of this brush's key selling points. Its sleek design is timeless, and will look the part in any bathroom.

Which one would we choose?

1st choice: Philips Sonicare 9900 Prestige
2nd choice:
Oral-B iO Series 9

3rd choice: Oral-B Genius X

Conclusion:

The 3 brushes do the same job.  They all clean the teeth very well and all offer more features than you need.

  • But, when you consider all the features on offer, the Sonicare 9900 Prestige is the more compelling option.  It is a more complete offering that feels a little more current and considerate of the user.

  • Whilst both Oral-B iO Series 9 and Genius X clean the teeth very well, the iO Series 9  is a much sleeker toothbrush. It is also quieter and the brushing action softer and smoother.  The display is innovative and makes the iO fairly unique.

  • However, the Genius X is the much better value option and isn’t far behind the Sonicare as an overall package.
