Fans of The Ordinary will know that this is not the first time the brand has stepped its foot into haircare. Back in 2018, The Ordinary's Multi-Peptide Serum for Hair Density went viral for boosting hair growth, and in response to that, the brand has been working hard behind-the-scenes to add more products to its haircare line.

"This new category launch for The Ordinary is the epitome of the 'skinification of hair',"The Ordinary's Chief Scientific Officer, Prudvi Kaka explains in a press release. "Offering consumers sophisticated formulations and ingredients that would ordinarily be used in skin care and with true science and transparency at the forefront.

The new products are The Ordinary's—

  • Sulphate 4% Cleanser for Hair & Body

  • Behentrimonium Chloride 2% Conditioner pH

  • Natural Moisturizing Factors +HA Scalp Treatment

The Ordinary Sulphate 4% Cleanser For Body & Hair

Sulphates have been viewed as a controversial ingredient since they can strip away too much moisture, leaving the hair dry and brittle. And if you've typically been an anti-sulphate advocate, The Ordinary wants to change your perception of it.

"A common myth about hair care that I see quite often is that certain ingredients are universally bad for hair," Chief Scientific Officer of DECIEM, the parent company of The Ordinary, said in a statement. "This statement does not hold true as from a scientific point of view, one must take into account the concentration of use, the total formulation, the pre-existing behaviour of the hair, and the specific hair concerns that need to be addressed. For example, the anti-sulphates messaging across the industry has labelled sulphates as harsh but, when formulated properly with appropriate concentration levels, they can create a mild and effective product."

For cleansing, The Ordinary Sulphate 4% Cleanser for Body and Hair is a mild foaming cleanser that effectively lifts dirt from hair-to-toe. The product offers SLES-2, a milder sulphate that has been incorporated into the formula to cleanse without stripping hair color.

The Ordinary Behentrimonium Chloride 2% Conditioner

The next product in the lineup is this Behentrimonium Chloride 2% Conditioner. There's nothing worse than your hair feeling heavy and tamped down when it's supposed to be clean and light as a feather. While some conditioners weigh your strands down, this one promises to keep them free and flowing.

Its hero ingredient, behentrimonium chloride, is a plant-based conditioning agent used in a bunch of clean beauty products to help your hair feel softer and smoother. This lightweight, simple formula that avoids the "bulky" ingredients typically found in conditioners, which can leave hair feeling weighed down. The brand promises its conditioner will leave your hair feeling super soft and more manageable so we are definitely eager to try it.

The Ordinary Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA for Scalp

Finally, the Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA For Scalp, which would be the final step in your hair routine and doesn't need to be washed out like many other scalp treatments. This super potent scalp treatment is a first-of-its-kind, water-light formulation that offers skin barrier protection, as well as improves scalp hydration. The product is designed to mimic hair's own natural moisturizing effects to hydrate the scalp, supported by appearances from hyaluronic acid and squalane. It's a leave-in treatment that is meant to be applied once daily, ideally at bedtime.

How to Use Them

If you have yet to establish a powerhouse wash day routine, consider this your perfect opportunity. While these products are gentle enough for daily use, you might not want to shampoo your hair every day anyway unless it's outstandingly oily. After cleansing hair with The Ordinary shampoo, thoroughly rinse it from hair before following up with a dollop of conditioner worked into hair from the ears down—that'll keep the conditioner concentrated where it's needed the most. After thoroughly rinsing, dry hair as usual.

For the serum, The Ordinary’s Chief Scientific Officer advises massaging a few drops into a clean, dry scalp once per day, ideally at bedtime. Because it is a leave-in treatment, you won't want to wash the hair or scalp after application. From there, all that's left to do is enjoy the results.
