Fjallraven Brand History and Origin

Fjällräven is the Swedish word for Arctic fox. The founder of Fjällräven, a man called Åke Nordin from Örnsköldsvik, had a solution. He created the first recognized ergonomic backpack: the Kånken Classic that promised to distribute weight more evenly across the shoulders and back. This backpack was the predecessor of the famous Kanken bag, and it's appeal lied in the revolutionary frame that the founder himself had made as a 14-year-old in the 50s, which made it much lighter than competing bags.

Åke had been working hard since 1960 to make hiking and outwear more durable in Sweden's harsh, wet climate. His focus moved to making school bags more comfortable and practical, and to great success. However, it wasn't until the 70s that Fjallraven released its now iconic Kanken bag, which was originally targeted at children to be used as a school bag.

Fjallraven Kanken Backpack Design & Style

Fjällräven's iconic Kanken bags still have the same simplicity and functionality that made them popular in 1978, when the Kanken backpack was first released. The only difference is that now there's a Kanken in a color and size for any situation. Fjällräven Kanken backpacks come in a range of colors, including frost green, orchid, yellow, ox red, as well as some newly released artistic designs.

It's a true classic, and its minimalistic design fits very well into our day and age. The Kanken back pack has a main pocket, two flat side pockets, and an additional zipped front pouch. This simple design keeps your possessions organized, but doesn't become overwhelming with all the options for pockets and zippers that some bags have. To keep the items in the backpack from jabbing into your back, the Kanken has a foam pad inserted into the back panel. This provides a bit of extra cushion without adding weight. The great thing about the foam pad is that it can be removed and used as a seat cushion wherever you're going.

Fjallraven Kanken Backpack Quality - Material & Durability

The Fjällräven Kånken backpack is made of strong stuff so it can handle pretty much any temperature or weather conditions. Vinylon F is a synthetic fiber used in all of Fjallraven's products to produce lightweight and durable outdoor items. It's made from weaved synthetic fibers, which actually swell when they get wet. That just makes the weave tighter, and helps the backpack resist rain showers without any additional coating. That's what makes the Kanken water-resistant.

Vinylon-F is also a really strong and durable material, and there's no doubt that your backpack will live through all the torture you can put it through. What's even better is that it is super easy to maintain. You can clean the backpack with just some soap and warm water, and it will be as good as new. The shell of this pack for built to withstand dirt, which is exactly what you want out of your everyday backpack too.

Herschel Backpack Design & Style

Herschel backpacks are designed to be ultimate everyday backpacks. Herschel's designs are vintage-inspired but with a modern twist, and when you see these backpacks you know it's a look that will always be on trend. The logo by itself used an old-time font and has an air of wistfulness about it. The striped lining which is a signature feature of Herschel bags is also a nod to the mill workers of the past. The nostalgia is also intertwined with a sense of adventure for their backpacks.

Herschel now has lots of backpack models in a wide range of colors and styles for both guys and girls. The brand has a few distinctly Herschel designs such as the classic Little America Backpack, the Heritage Backpack, and the Town Backpack, with seasonal variations on color, fabric, texture, and print.

The Little America is the company's most popular bag. It's a one-compartment, top-loading daypack that closes with a drawstring and a flap cover. This collection has a split purpose: As a heritage fashion bag, it's meant to be on trend and cosmetic while also being utilitarian.  Their classics line is made for the everyday young professional, their SealTech line is perfect for the rough and ready explorer, and their ApexKnit collection is the go-to for high-tech backpackers.

Herschel Backpack Quality - Material & Durability

Herschel carries several different lines of backpacks in order to appeal to a wide variety of consumers. As a result of their passion for backpacks, Herschel is always at the forefront of revolutionary new designs and materials to make their backpacks better than ever. When it comes to design,Herschel delivers high-quality backpacks.

Take, for instance, their SealTech line, which is composed of the same material used in WWII parachutes. Made from nylon, the ripstop fabric has a special crosshatch weave interspersed with finer yarns that essentially “self-heals”. That's right, if your bag is punctured, simply rub your fingers over the puncture hole and the heat from your fingers will cause the fabric to heal itself! However, Herschel isn't just high-tech, it's also environmentally friendly! They trademarked a new fabric called ApexKnit. This woven fabric helps to significantly reduce the waste and energy associated with making a backpack, reducing its carbon footprint significantly.

Kipling Backpack Design & Style

Kipling, a fashion icon for accessories in the 1990s, has reinvented itself to cater to the tastes of the millennials. These bags marry utility with fashion to make them a conversation piece amongst the youth.  A few years after the brand started and became popular, it lost its way, getting stuck in a feminine and childish image. Since being acquired in 2003 by VF Corporation, the designs have undergone a change. Now it has regained its popularity as a trendy, fashionable brand. The bags combine style with function, are aesthetically designed, durable, colorful and fun but light and versatile, as they can be used for many purposes. Be it for school or work, the Kipling bag provides convenience and comfort.

They have a wide range of products, and not just for women but for men as well. If you're looking to make a statement, their throwback styles feature the fun, contrasting Kipling vintage logo, large iconic zippers and personality to boot. These vintage backpacks are among the most-loved in their collection. Looking for a backpack with a dressy flair? Fjallraven Kanken vs. Herschel vs. Kipling: which wins the cool backpack smackdown?

Fjallraven backpack

Fjällräven is a brand of modern and stylish, minimalistic designs that takes great care to make products that last for a long time and perform well. What separated Fjallraven from its competitors was the lightweight design of the bag and the spacious interior that it offered. Their outdoor gear are very high-performance and last for a really long time. The price tag is pretty hefty, but I encourage you to see it as an investment.

If you want a casual, day pack, then it's one of a good backpack for that purpose. It's comfortable, practical and the minimalistic style can be quite appealing as well. Besides, If you are looking for a more technical design to take on a hike or short trips, I think it's the best design among these three brands. It's suitable for school, but those who are looking to carry heavy weights, we think should look for a sturdier design that carries and distributes weight better. The Fjallraven Kanken backpack became a hit among teenagers, hipsters, and adults alike.

Herschel backpack

Herschel bags are built for the outdoors lifestyle, although they work just as well for everyday use. They are durable and functional and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. If you want a trendy travel bag, whether, for hiking or business trips, Herschel is your brand.

Part of what makes Herschel such a popular brand is that they recognize that backpacks aren't a one size fits all. What a casual urbanite might want in a bag could be quite different from what your everyday traveler needs. In order to provide the perfect bag for everyone, Herschel has adopted a divide and conquer approach. If it fits in your style, you should definitely consider getting it. After all, it's dirt cheap - several designs are under $60.

Kipling backpack

Kipling bags have style and they are feature-rich. Some of the reasons for their bags popularity include: lightweight, versatile, choice of colors, multiple compartments, practical and functional, value for money, trendy and fashionable.

Kipling bags are affordable. Most of the ladies' handbags cost less than $100. At this price, the users are not only assured durability and convenience but also a choice of colors and patterns. What they also are, however, is a fun, funky, and stylish way to carry your everyday travel essentials with you. Be it for school or work, the Kipling bag provides convenience and comfort.
