gift_guide_powermat.jpg Have a certain tech-savvy someone on your holiday shopping list? One who already has the latest iPhone, iPod and Nintendo DS? Someone for whom you couldn’t possibly buy another tech toy because, well, he already owns most of them? Enter the Powermat, our gift of choice for the gadget-loving guy (or gal) who has everything.

At less than $100, the Powermat Home and Office Charging Mat—also available in a portable version—is the revolutionary new way to charge gadgets. As its name suggests, the Powermat is, indeed, a mat that recharges any compatible device placed on top of it—sans power cords. Yes, you read that right. We’re talking no tangled cords, no lost cell chargers and no bending and contorting your body to reach the power outlet.

How does it work? The Powermat uses magnetic induction technology to transfer electricity from the pad to the gadgets resting on top of it. (Don’t worry, there’s no danger of electric shock.) Translation: You simply place up to three tech toys on the Powermat and wait for a sound and light to indicate that the devices are charging. Each device requires a receiver, which either replaces a gadget’s existing battery cover or attaches to the device’s outer shell, for the electric re-juicing to occur.

The green advantage: Once a device is charged, the mat automatically stops charging and continues to monitor the device—just in case a top off is needed. Many tech experts have reported shorter charging times while using the Powermat. This tech-tastic device can be used to charge iPods, iPhones, Nintendo DSi and Nintendo DS Lite, many LG phones, many Samsung phones, Sony Playstation Portable and even some Kodak cameras.

See? We told you it was the ideal gift for the gadget guru in your life. Now you can stop obsessing about finding the latest tech toy to impress him come Christmas morning and start shopping for other items on your list—like that sequined number you’re dreaming of for New Year’s Eve.

That’s pretty neat, but once you buy the device and jackets for each device you own, it adds up to over $200 and at that price point it seems more like a novelty.
