The passing of John Hughes has us all feeling a bit nostalgic for his quintessential teen flicks—along with the angst, music and fashion—that have never lost their hypnotic lure. (We’ll never be too old to admit that the teenage girls inside of us still long for the day that Jake Ryan will be waiting for us in a church parking lot.)

It’s hard not to love Hughes, a man who made moviegoers fall madly, deeply in love with quirky girls—think Molly Ringwald as Sam in Sixteen Candles and Andie in Pretty in Pink. Not to mention Ally Sheedy as Allison Reynolds in The Breakfast Club. They were oddballs and outcasts, and we adored them all the more for it.

Twenty years later, we still hold on to fanciful ideas of raiding these characters’ fabled closets—and of having Andie snip and sew a semi-atrocious prom dress creation we can call our own.

Amid these fashion fantasies and undying dreams of dating Ferris Bueller, we’ve concocted our own style tribute to the ladies of Saturday detention. Without further ado, here’s our guide to channeling the girls who play to the princess and basket case in all of us.

Allison Reynolds: With her packed purse and untamed hair, Allison was dark and strange and beguiling—even when she was eating Cap’n Crunch and Pixie Stix on white bread. We must admit, we liked her much better pre-makeover with gobs of smudged black eyeliner. A few ways to nab Allison’s look (before Claire Standish got her hands on her):

Claire Standish: Ringwald’s Claire Standish was the ultimate status queen. You remember her type. But just in case, here’s a little refresher: “Do you know how popular I am? I am so popular. Everybody loves me so much at this school.” Yeah, she was that girl.

In her tweed skirt, layered tops, riding boots and diamond studs, Claire was the perfectly preened picture of an ’80s uber-WASP. Sure, her character was a bit too prissy princess for our taste, but we can’t help but love her preppy look. Our picks to channel Claire’s signature style:
