Wouldn’t it be dreamy if you discovered a weathered trunk—let’s say in your grandmother’s attic—that held the most breathtaking antiqued lace pretties? The kind of pieces that are just begging for you to breathe life into them. I experienced a similar thrill of discovery when my eyes fell upon these heirloom lace tops in the “new vintage” section of Piperlime.com.
These tops, of course, are not freebie finds or pretty hand-me-downs, but they do have a certain heirloom charm, don’t you think?
Lace is just so delicate and sweet, which makes it hard to resist when (like me) you’re completely enamored of all things feminine. The trick to making such girlie pieces work is in the styling. It’s best to keep the other elements of your outfit simple, grounded and a little tough. After all, lace has a lot of gorgeous detail all on its own.
How to Work a Lace Look
To ensure that your lace-kissed ensemble isn’t too prissy and pristine, gravitate to items that are earthy and not overtly frilly. Add a lace top to worn jeans, perhaps your favorite pair of beat-up boyfriend jeans rolled carelessly above the ankles. Toss in a pair of teetering wood wedges or strappy leather thong sandals. And, to allow the lace to hold its feminine reign, opt for jewelry that isn’t too precious. (Think slightly tough gold chains layered around your neck, wooden bangles or a chunky stone ring.)
Thanks to the airy nature of this look, these lace tops are ideal for your spring social calendar. Slip on a lace tank and let it peek out from beneath a blazer at work and ditch the cover-up for dinner. And can’t you picture some of these pieces slipped on poolside over a bikini then coupled with skinny jeans and some sky-high platforms for drinks?
Where to Nab These Picks
You can get your pretty little hands on each of these lace looks at Piperlime.com, which by the way is the home of free shipping and free returns. (Yes, that’s true—pinkie promise!) Just imagine yourself donning a top that is the epitome of creamy, soft perfection and click away. I’m partial to the clay-colored Beyond Vintage number with the lace panels and scalloped sleeves—not to mention the ivory LnA racerback tank—but as always, it’s to each her own.
Whether you’re an audiophile who doesn’t let the sun set without giving an LP a spin—or someone whose once-loved records now live in a dusty pile (for shame!)—I’d like to introduce you to a new friend: the Stanton T.55 USB Turntable.
This turntable allows serious record collectors to archive and convert vinyl records into MP3s. Why would you want to archive your vinyl library in your Mac or PC? Well, let me put it this way: How many of your “can’t live without this” records aren’t on your iPod? And how heartbroken would you be if a hard-to-find and impossible-to-replace vinyl love met an untimely death? I though so.
Why You’ll Love It: Digitizing your collection will not only allow you to bring your vinyl faves along on summer road trips (or your daily commute to work), but it will also allow you to preserve your collection. (Perhaps to educate future generations about the pre-Miley Cyrus era—an accomplishment that is certainly worth more than the cash you’d shell out for this turntable.) Not to mention, the Stanton T.55 makes the conversion process quite simple.
How It Works: Thanks to the music editing software included with purchase—Cakewalk Pyro Audio Creator and Audacity, to be exact—you simply plug the turntable into your computer’s USB port, drop the needle and click record. Then you can sit back as your record pops and crackles its way to a new digital life. Once an album is on your hard drive, you can edit, clean up and tag songs. (The latter step is easier said than done, but it’s entirely necessary to name separate songs for future playlist building.)
The Downside: Though simple, the vinyl-to-computer process can be time consuming, especially if your collection is hundreds strong. But unless your LPs are set to self-destruct in t-minus 24 hours, it shouldn’t be a problem that some dedication and a handful of lazy Sunday afternoons can’t solve.

When Kate Spade’s clothing collection debuted in the fall, you may recall how I fawned over every piece, cooing and blabbing about how her designs are kissed with oh-so-much retro charm and wit. Well, prepare yourselves for the sequel.
I dropped by Kate Spade’s site the other day, and boy, are you all in for a sweet surprise. Not only is her Spring 2010 line just as chockfull of cheery prints, bright colors and plenty of vintage sass, but it’s also presented with unprecedented amounts of panache. That’s the thing about Kate Spade: Just when you think you couldn’t engage in any more swoon sessions over her artistry and playful take on fashion, she reveals something new—and you fall even harder.
Yes, I did fawn over Spade’s new spring styles, which included energizing doses of lemony yellow, lots of pop-tastic stripes and even a polka dot dress that rivals the pink-dotted number that Cher rocked in Mermaids (remember that sweet number?). But I also couldn’t stop ogling the genius product shots found in the “3 Ways to Wear Five of Our Favorites for Spring” feature.
When you have a moment—and when you feel particularly prepared to experience true happiness—give Spade’s new spring web feature a little looksy. As you move your mouse over each sunny shot, you’ll find a slideshow with ideas for how to style each piece. Aside from inspiration, you’ll find snapshots of tickets from the fare, sightseeing accoutrements, shiny pinwheels and plenty of goodness to chase away the winter blahs.
While you’re at the Kate Spade site, you may want to pry your eyes away from all of this merriment to nab a few pieces from her new collection. I certainly have my eye on a few springtime musts. (Okay, I have my eye on each and every piece in the line—from the shoes in happy shades to the one umbrella that could make me yearn for spring showers.)
Despite much difficulty in narrowing down the field, these pieces sit atop my (very long) Kate Spade wish list:
1. Soda Fountain Stripe Ivy Car Coat: Every girl needs a spring coat, something to take her from bleary winter days to cool spring nights. This car coat has the perfect shape and silhouette for frolicking through fields of budding flowers—or just trotting about the land of cubicles.
2. Kate Spade Umbrella: April showers might bring May flowers, but the joyful stripes in this rainbow-print umbrella are bright enough to encourage even the shyest of blossoms to come out and play.
3. Charm City Ostrich Maryanne Tote: I’ve always shied away from purples and plums in my wardrobe, lest I call to mind visions of a certain singing dinosaur. But I think I’ve been wrong all along. Looking at this leather, bow-bedecked tote, I can only think of purple iris blooms—and how many file folders, notebooks, bottles of water and so on that I could stuff inside of this roomy bag.
4. Connect Four Reina Dress: Here it is, the aforementioned unbelievably-better-than-the-perfectly-retro-polka-dotted number that Cher wore while flitting from scene to scene in Mermaids. The confetti-like spots are strewn throughout this print with a certain devil-may-care attitude, which lends a lighthearted spirit to this polished silk douppioni dress.
5. Kellie Too Heels: What will it be: tootsies swathed in mustard, cobalt or orange? These crinkle patent heels are available in all three shades, but as I’m casting my vote for the end of winter bleakness, the sunny shade is a must.
6. Pass the Shades Cotton Scarf: I may be wishing winter away, but not without mourning the impending retirement of my too-thick-for-warmer-weather scarves. Luckily, this luxe cotton scarf is light enough to survive the seasonal transition. Plus, with the splash of multi-colored sunglasses, prints don’t get much more playful than this. Quintessential Kate Spade, quintessential cuteness.

Some people will wait outside of sporting venues or department stores for hours—days even—to nab tickets to the big game or to grab the hottest Wii this or that. Me? I’ll show up outside of Target long before the automated doors slide open on March 14 to grab home items (supermarket sweep style) from the new Liberty of London for Target line.
Or even better, I think I’ll avoid the whole waking up early and getting dressed portion of the event and just click to my heart’s content as I troll the online store. I’m much less likely to throw some ‘bows as I grab for teapots that way.
Not familiar with Liberty of London? Well, Liberty is a 134-year-old British brand revered for its super-detailed prints, which exude a lavish, ’60s-style charm. While Target’s collaborations with big-name designers and labels are certainly nothing new, it’s the broad reach of this line that has tasteful tongues wagging.
You see, Liberty of London has joined with Target to offer everything from looks for fashionistas big and small to kitchen wares, garden goodies, stationary and even a bicycle or two for good measure. And the entire array of products is stamped with Liberty of London’s bold, colorful prints.
So, it follows that Liberty’s bedding, throw pillows, coffee cups and such are a simple and oh-so-cheery way to start adorning your home with bits of springtime goodness. (Sure, I don’t need a second teapot or another two-level serving tray. But I do need the ones in the photo above, you know?)
As someone who is perpetually in the market for light, fun, retro-inspired home décor, another springy dress and a cruiser bike that reflects my taste in all of the aforementioned, this Liberty of London collab will transform Target into my shopping Mecca. Not that Target needed much of a boost in that department—did you see the Orla Kiely and Jean Paul Gaultier collaborations? Dreamy.
Right now, Target is featuring but a few tasty morsels from the line on its website. But if you watch the Liberty of London promo video on the site (repeatedly and with frequent pausing and rewinding sessions, as I did), you’ll catch glimpses of storage canisters, a lampshade, purses, watering cans and an umbrella. While you’re there, download a free desktop wallpaper or iPhone background to kick-start your Liberty of London binge.
Sounds fabulous, right? Mark your calendars for Liberty’s March 14 arrival. If the Orla Kiely collaboration taught us anything, it’s that products from the juiciest of Target partnerships are pillaged quickly and without concern for those of us who are a little late to the party.
Few days are as groan-worthy as laundry day, especially for those of us who daydream about washer-dryer hookups, lovely steam washers and laundry rooms to call our own. Unfortunately, dates with my dirty clothes typically involve a handful of quarters (scrounged from the depths of my purse and every hidden car nook), a bottle of rock-heavy detergent and my unsightly laundry bag.
Alas, a solution for the latter issue: gorgeous laundry bags from India Rose. These 100 percent cotton bags are the dirty clothes solution I never knew I needed. Now, after stumbling upon these lovelies at BurkeDecor.com, I can’t imagine my laundry life without them.
The Need: A Sturdy Laundry Bag
These India Rose bags are roomy enough to hold all of the lights, darks and delicates you can stuff in them. And they’re sturdy enough to withstand the unruliest loads of laundry. But unlike hard-to-carry baskets and the utilitarian bags I’ve typically resigned myself to schlepping to the laundromat, these laundry bags are actually cute.
As any New Yorker can attest, there is a certain amount of awkwardness involved in parading a bulging bag of dirty laundry down the block for every stranger to see. And with other bags and baskets, it’s quite clear to all who cross your path that you are, indeed, smuggling unmentionables across town. Enter the India Rose creations.
The Want: Something Pretty
Once on your shoulder, these India Rose bags look a bit like fun and frilly summer dresses. The line’s quintessential White Devil Bags (shown in white, grasshopper and neapolitan in the top two photos above) are as sweet as sherbet.
And the Calypso Ruffle Bag at the bottom right—very carefree can-can dancer, don’t you think? To top it off, with its lime-hued tuxedo ruffles, the Canggu Laundry Bag hearkens back to girlhood days when fancy, ruffled socks were all the rage.
The best part? All of these bags are appealing enough to detract from your laundry day fashion don’ts. (Mismatched socks, anyone?) Plus, you won’t feel the need to hide them away in the depths of your closet between washes. And, if you really fall for these expertly designed laundry bags, you may be finding reasons to carry them long after the spin cycle is complete.

As a fan of all things Alice (and all things Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, for that matter), I’ve been experiencing months of kid-like excitement for the March release of Alice in Wonderland. This, of course, can be attributed to a fascination with the Lewis Carroll fairytale that began in my days of OshKosh and pigtails.
As a little girl, I was enamored of the idea of escaping into a bizarre fantasy world. All of that shrinking and growing, giving in to the lure of “Drink Me” potions and “Eat Me” cakes, the clinking of china at a mad tea party and painting the roses red—well, they make for a forever kind of fancy. And, judging by the buzz surrounding Tim Burton’s take on the classic tale, I’m not the only one still under Alice’s spell.
With little to go on but a few trailers and some striking stills from the movie, I’ve been growing curiouser and curiouser about the glorious weirdness that Burton’s version will hold. And, while I know that I certainly won’t be late for that very important date at the theater on March 5, I’m growing a bit antsy.
So, seeing as how I have Alice in Wonderland on the brain, I thought I would go on my own little trip to pluck some Wonderland-inspired curiosities from the Web. As always, with its quirky selection of vintage and retro clothing and accessories, ModCloth did not disappoint. I hope these pieces will help you slip into your own peculiar daydream.
1. The Red Queen: One glimpse at the crimson heart painted on Helena Bonham Carter’s pout, and we were smitten with Burton’s vision of The Red Queen. This hard plastic cuff—so pop-art fantastic!—is just as bold as the queen herself. Slip it on your wrist and channel The Red Queen’s signature sass when you hit the theater for Alice in Wonderland. That noisy couple who just won’t hush up during previews? Off with their heads! Heartbeats Cuff, ModCloth.com.
2. Late for a Very Important Date: The White Rabbit had his pocket watch, and you have this ornate Victorian-inspired necklace. Much like the classic black-and-white timpiece our favorite panicked hare carried, this version is perfect for punctual types. Time for Romance Necklace, ModCloth.com.
3. Fit for a Mad Hatter: Add a bit of whimsy (and just a smidge of lunacy) to your look with this very Mad Hatter-esque bowtie necklace. Let the checkered graphics subtly pop against an otherwise subdued LBD. Or channel Johnny Depp’s character and go completely stomp-on-the-table-and-rattle-the-tea-set mad by pairing it with Technicolor tights and look-at-me patterns. Floutingly Formal Necklace, ModCloth.com.
4. All About Alice: Nothing to wear to your next tea party? Go ask Alice for a bit of fashion advice. Surely she’d direct you to a dreamy-yet-formal number, much like this seafoam blue confection. With its ruffles and soft shimmer, this dress is perfect for your descent down the rabbit hole. Earth Angel Dress, ModCloth.com.
5. Wrap the White Rabbit Around Your Finger: Yes, he’s a little (okay, a lot) type A. And he’s quite uptight about his schedule. But the White Rabbit does have his moments. So show him what it’s really like to let down your hare, er, hair, when you don this delicate gold ring. Wear this bauble, which has all of the appeal of a secondhand oddity, to a cocktail party where you can show Mr. Rabbit how a queen really shuts it down. Peter Golden Tail Ring, ModCloth.com.
6. Painting the Roses Red: The Red Queen couldn’t stand the sight of a white rose. Maybe she was onto something. After all, every lady looks good in red. Channel the queen’s royal bravado and turn heads (rather than chopping them off) in this waist-cinching scarlet belt. Never Waist a Rose Belt in Scarlet, ModCloth.com.

Raise your hand if you can’t resist a sale rack. Okay, now keep it raised if you go a little weak in the knees for fashion superstar Marc Jacobs and his “I’ve searched every vintage store to bring you the absolute best in retro chic” designs.
Everyone still have their hands up? We predicted as much, which is why we’re scooting a little closer to pass along secrets of a can’t miss sale: 40 percent off all Marc by Marc Jacobs, the designer’s diffusion line, at Bluefly.com. (Be still, our hearts: Some pieces are discounted even further.)
If our mothers hadn’t taught us to share and share alike, we would be in our right, fashionable minds to keep this little money-saving morsel to ourselves. After all, we’ve already gasped at ominous warning signs reading “Only 1 left” appearing below the site’s listings for cropped jackets, ruffled dresses and the like.
You see, this sale has already begun, and we can hear the clock tick-tocking—not to mention the girlie, vintage-inspired Marc by Marc Jacobs pieces calling to us from the Bluefly pages. “Pick me, pick me!” they say. “You’ll never be able to afford me otherwise. And weren’t you just saying that you need more airy dresses, gauzy cardigans and light tops to round out your spring wardrobe?”
Yes, we hear you. We may have to resign ourselves to longing and yearning for many of the pieces that you send down the runway, Marc Jacobs. But these…these, we can afford.
So, to the yellow cotton jumper and the jungle-print tunic we say, “We’ve already sent for you. Soon you will climb into a box and travel to your new home. The trip may be dark and scary, but we have cleared a nice, warm place for you in our closets. You’ll never be unworn or unloved again. Pinkie promise.”

In a world where Kindle is king, who should consider a different brand of e-reader? Well, if you’re on a first-name basis with the barista at Barnes & Noble—and if you’re fond of sharing your favorite reads with friends—you may want to become acquainted with the Nook. (Note: If you’d much rather shell out more money for the bright and shiny iPad, read no further.)
The Barnes & Noble e-reader may look and act a lot like the Kindle (think similar 6-inch black-and-white displays, prices and 3G wireless networks to browse and download books and the like). But the Nook boasts a few key differences. As far as aesthetics are concerned, the Nook has a color touchscreen—a tasty morsel of eye candy that is much more palatable than Kindle’s keyboard.
Then there is the matter of free book browsing when Nook users physically stroll into Barnes & Noble stores. As you walk into the bookstore giant with your Nook in tow, the device recognizes its homeland, greets you with welcome messages and tips you off to in-store offers. The best part? You can use the Nook’s Wi-Fi to read any e-book in the store. (A familiar act to anyone who has spent entire afternoons at the store, grabbing an armful of books, ordering a coffee and scoping out the comfiest cushy chair to put a dent in your reading list—typically sans purchase.)
Share and Share Alike
For those of us who like to spread the love with our fave books, the Nook offers a lending feature. If you come across a book that merits sharing, the Nook gives you the ability to lend digital books to other Nook or iPhone users as well as anyone with a computer that runs the Barnes & Noble e-reader software. Your friends will have access to the book for two weeks, after which time you get it back.
The downside? Some tech experts have reported that, when compared to the Kindle, the Nook has a shorter battery life and is a bit slower to boot up, power down, turn pages and such. But the free book browsing—and the lovely designer cases we’ve highlighted here—left us quite willing to forgive any pokiness.
Designer Dish
Whew, now that we have all of that tech talk out of the way, we can coo over these amazing designer collaborations. Iconic designer Jonathan Adler, the always genius Kate Spade and Jack Spade (the male counterpart to the Kate Spade line) all contributed covers for the Nook.
We are quite enamored with the something-for-everyone selection of designs. (Though we admit to being partial to Adler’s bold punctuation cover and the workman’s-glove-inspired Jack Spade cover, which is swathed in cotton canvas and finished with a durable blue latex bottom).
Did we mention the sweet surprises that await you inside? Some of the covetable cases also include business card holders and sewn-in labels just begging for personalization. While we admit that the act of holding a real book in our hands will never lose its allure, we are quite smitten with the form-meets-function-meets-free-reads thing that the Nook has going on.
A Nook and Cover to Call Your Own
The Nook and all of these designer covers are available online at Barnes & Noble:
1. Jane Street Cover in Bright Pink/Marmalade, Kate Spade.
2. Punctuation Cover, Jonathan Adler.
3. Dipped Industrial Canvas Cover in Blue/Natural, Jack Spade.
4. Canvas Bella Library Cover, Kate Spade.
